Listen to this chapter:

Teresa said, โ€œSanford and I arenโ€™t a couple. When Charlie came back to Nareigh, I was driving after him. Sanford just happened to run into me, and together we took the elderly woman Charlie hit to the hospital.โ€

โ€œAs for the lawyer, I honestly didnโ€™t know my mom had called you. I didnโ€™t want to trouble you, and I didnโ€™t use Sanfordโ€™s lawyer either. I found one myself. This is my momโ€™s issue, and I donโ€™t want my ex-husband involved.โ€

โ€œI also just didnโ€™t want people talking about you. Charlieโ€™s hit-and-run case made the news, and Iโ€™m guessing the trial will be public. If the media stirs things up, and you, as my ex-husband, help me find a lawyer, people will definitely gossip. And honestly, I donโ€™t have the time or energy to just go out for dinner with Sanford.โ€

โ€œThe only reason I did was because the victimโ€™s family blamed me for the accident. When I went to the hospital to visit, they wouldnโ€™t let it go. Sanford stepped in to protect me and got a little hurt. I felt bad, so I treated him to dinner.โ€

โ€œHe came back from Shaville for my sisterโ€™s wedding. He doesnโ€™t have a place in Nareigh, so heโ€™s staying at a hotel. I just gave him a ride. Thatโ€™s it.โ€ After she finished, Teresa took another sip of her juice.

โ€œAre you hurt?โ€ Jonathan asked. Teresa shook her head.

Jonathan frowned. โ€œIt was Charlie who hit someone and ran. Why wonโ€™t the victimโ€™s family let you off the hook?โ€

Teresa gave a wry smile. โ€œThey think if I hadnโ€™t chased after Charlie, he wouldnโ€™t have hit the old woman. So, in their eyes, itโ€™s all my fault.โ€

Jonathan fixed his gaze on Teresa. โ€œLet me take care of this for you.โ€

โ€œNo need,โ€ Teresa replied. โ€œIโ€™ll just stop visiting the hospital. As for the rest, letโ€™s wait for Charlieโ€™s trial and see how many years he gets, how much he has to pay.โ€

Jonathan made a soft sound, his eyes growing gentler. โ€œAfter everything you just said, am I right to think you actually care about my reputation? That youโ€™re worried Iโ€™ll get dragged down because of you?โ€

Teresa shot him a glare. โ€œYouโ€™re overthinking it.โ€

Jonathan just smiled. โ€œAre you still mad at me?โ€

Teresa huffed. โ€œIโ€™ve forgiven you. But so what? Whether Iโ€™m mad or not, nothingโ€™s changed between us, has it?โ€ Jonathan fell silent.

It was getting late, so it was time to head back. Jonathan picked up Michael and asked Teresa, โ€œAre we still dropping him off at Miriamโ€™s place?โ€

โ€œMiriam went back to her parentsโ€™ house. Just leave the kid with me,โ€ Teresa replied.

โ€œIf itโ€™s a hassle for you, I can take the little guy with me,โ€ Jonathan offered.

Teresa thought to herself, โ€˜What could Michael be a hassle for me?โ€™

As they passed a convenience store, Jonathan got out and bought some snacks for Teresa to take home. He parked the car on the curb. It was a summer night, warm and a bit stuffy, so the windows were down. Since Michael was still little, they couldnโ€™t let the AC blow on him directly.

Because the windows were open, Sanford, who was across the street, happened to see them as Jonathan got back in the car. Sanford had sharp eyes. He spotted Teresa and the child she was holding close. From where Sanford stood, he couldnโ€™t make out the kidโ€™s face and just saw a small figure in a T-shirt and shorts.

Sanford frowned. He thought, โ€˜Is that Isabel? But the figure doesnโ€™t look right. Who is that kid?โ€™

The Maybach had already driven off. Sanford kept his eyes on the departing car, squinting thoughtfully.

When they reached the gates of Rosary Estates, Jonathan carried Michael out of the car. Teresa moved to take the boy from him.

โ€œIโ€™ll carry him to your door, then Iโ€™ll head out,โ€ Jonathan offered.

โ€œNo need, or else Iโ€™ll have to make you coffee,โ€ Teresa replied, still taking Michael from his arms. โ€œItโ€™s late, you should get some rest. Iโ€™ll hand Michael over to Miriam tomorrow.โ€

Jonathanโ€™s mind wasnโ€™t on the child at all. He just stared at Teresa, who barely met his eyes. After a long pause, he finally asked the question that had been weighing on him for so long. โ€œIs there really no way for us to go back?โ€

Teresa frowned slightly.

โ€œWe canโ€™t go back, and we canโ€™t start over,โ€ Jonathan said quietly, his voice low.

โ€œEven if we started over, weโ€™d still end up the same,โ€ Teresa said.

โ€œAfter Hannah and Donaldโ€™s wedding, I donโ€™t think thereโ€™s any reason for us to sit down together again. Goodbye.โ€ With that, Teresa turned and walked away.

Jonathan remained silent.

Even though Teresa had paid Jonathan back, he knew that money was actually Evelynโ€™sโ€”money Charlie had pocketed for himself. After a lifetime of hard work, Evelynโ€™s fortune shrunk from millions to just 1 million dollars, and ended up with him. Jonathan didnโ€™t need that 1 million dollars. He met Evelyn privately and tried to return the money to her.

But Evelyn refused. โ€œYou gave me 2.6 million dollars back then, saying it was for Teresaโ€™s wedding if she ever remarried. I never told her. I just took the money and invested it instead. In the end, I lost it all. I was scammed, but thatโ€™s on me, not you. I canโ€™t take this money back.โ€

Jonathan sighed. โ€œEvelyn, I know this was your savings. Please, take it. You still have Isabel to raise.โ€

But Evelyn just shook her head. โ€œI really canโ€™t accept it. I want Teresa to be able to hold her head high in front of you. I was too greedy, too desperate to prove myself, to show I could bounce back no matter what.โ€

โ€œBut you canโ€™t fight time. I was too impatient, too reckless. I trusted a manโ€™s words and invested blindly. If I take your money now, my daughters will only be ashamed of me.โ€

All these years, she hadnโ€™t been a good mother. Sheโ€™d let down her eldest, Hannah, her second daughter, Teresa, and her youngest, little Isabel, who still needed her so much. It was only now that Evelyn truly realized that earning her daughtersโ€™ respect wasnโ€™t about how much money she made, but about loving them with all her heart.

โ€œJonathan, I know youโ€™ve always been good to Teresa. You still care about her, donโ€™t you? You still love her, right?โ€ asked Evelyn.

Jonathan didnโ€™t try to hide it. He was honest, and he still loved Teresa.

โ€œThank you for always treating Teresa so well. If Iโ€™d met a man like you, maybe my life wouldnโ€™t have been so miserable.โ€

โ€œEvelyn, please donโ€™t say that,โ€ Jonathan comforted Evelyn. โ€œThe man who truly cherishes you might be just around the corner.โ€

Evelyn shook her head, looking a little afraid. โ€œIโ€™ve stopped hoping to meet a man who really cares about me. I have three daughters now, and Isabel is still so young. All I need to do is raise her well.โ€

Jonathan didnโ€™t push the topic and turned it back to himself. โ€œI love Teresa, but she doesnโ€™t love me.โ€

โ€œJonathan,โ€ Evelyn said slowly, โ€œyou know what they sayโ€”sometimes the people involved canโ€™t see things clearly, but outsiders can. Teresa, actuallyโ€ฆโ€
