Chapter 471
Michael, in a bright yellow raincoat, dashed toward Jonathan, his little legs pumping, rain boots splashing through every puddle. Jonathan stood, but halfway there, Michael veered off, grabbed an umbrella from the car, and hurried back, clutching it tightly in his arms.
โMr. Lime,โ Michael quickly handed the umbrella to Jonathan. โWhy arenโt you getting out of the rain?โ
Jonathan took the umbrella and opened it, only to realize it was a child's umbrella. He bent down, tilting it toward Michael. โMike, what are you doing here?โ
Michael was about to say, โI came toโโ but before he could finish, Miriam arrived. โJonathan, oh my gosh, what are you doing out here? Itโs raining! Why arenโt you in the car?โ
Jonathan paused. โShe hasnโt had dinner yet. Take her to get something to eat, my treat.โ
โNo, thatโs fine,โ Miriam said quickly, grabbing Michaelโs hand and affecting a casual tone. โHeโs my cousinโs child. He insisted on coming with me, so I brought him along to pick up Teresa.โ
Jonathan didnโt press. Before he could say goodbye, Miriam hurried off with Michael. Michael kept glancing back at Jonathan, clearly reluctant to leave.
Teresa was still at the office when Miriam and Michael arrived. Miriam told her theyโd just run into Jonathan downstairs. Teresa froze, grabbing Michaelโs hand. Miriam said, โDonโt worry, I didnโt really talk to him.โ
โFine. Didnโt you go to the water park with Edward today?โ Teresa asked.
Miriam sighed. โThe weather was bad, so we turned back halfway. When you still werenโt home so late and didnโt answer your phone, I got worried something happened, so Mike and I came to find you.โ
Teresa checked her phone, seeing missed calls from Miriam. โSorry, my phone was on silent.โ
โNow that youโre done, letโs go get something to eat.โ
Teresa agreed, and by the time they went downstairs, the rain had stopped. Teresa was about to head to her car when Michael let go of Miriamโs hand, shouted โMr. Lime!โ and dashed to Jonathan.
Teresa stopped and looked up. Michael had already reached Jonathan, who scooped him up, but still hadnโt left. Jonathan walked over, shot a look at Teresa (who clearly wasnโt happy to see him), and said to Miriam, โItโs getting late. Let me give you guys a ride.โ
โNo need,โ Teresa replied. โIโll drive myself.โ
Jonathan narrowed his eyes. โI wasnโt talking to you,โ he said, turning to Miriam.
Miriam felt trapped. She thought, โWhy am I always caught between them when they argue?โ
โI want to ride in Mr. Limeโs car!โ Michael clung to Jonathanโs neck, refusing to let go.
Teresa glanced at the little โtraitorโ snuggled in Jonathanโs arms but didnโt say a word.
Trying to play peacemaker, Miriam said, โAlright, letโs just take Jonathanโs car. The roads are slippery after the rain anyway. Iโll leave my car here and pick it up tomorrow.โ
After a few seconds of silence, Teresa said to Jonathan, โIf youโre playing driver, donโt forget to run the meter. Iโll pay you for the ride.โ
Jonathanโs face darkened, but he pretended not to hear. He opened the back door. โGet in.โ
Miriam stifled a laugh, pulled Teresa into the car, and joked, โAlright, Mr. Lynn, donโt forget to start the meter!โ
Jonathan handed Michael to Miriam, then got in himself. Miriamโs phone rang. She answered and sighed. โAlright, Iโm on my way.โ
After hanging up, she explained, โMy brother just got back from school and heโs stuck at the airport. Itโs too late to get a cab, so my parents want me to pick him up and head home.โ
