Jonathan didnโt leave. He stood at the door, talking to himself: โI lost my cool earlier. You paid back all the money. I wanted to see you, but you were saying thereโs nothing left for us to talk about. Then you went out to eat with that guy, Thomas, and even went to a hotel with him. You came back so late. I stood out here in the rain, just waiting, wondering when youโd come home. Do you have any idea how that felt for me?โ
Teresa remained silent.
Jonathan said, โGet some rest. Iโll come by again tomorrow. Looks like itโll rain again, so just stay in, okay?โ His footsteps slowly faded away.
Teresa was up by seven the next morning. She got ready and headed out for work. When she got downstairs, she saw Jonathanโs car already parked outside.
โCan we talk?โ Jonathan called out.
โThereโs nothing to talk about. Youโre always right, arenโt you?โ Teresa snapped, shaking off his hand and getting into her car. Jonathan noticed she didnโt even bother adjusting her seat before driving off. He stepped back and said, โAlright, go ahead. Just drive safe, okay?โ But Teresa had already started the engine and sped away.
Still worried, Jonathan followed her car at a distance all the way to her company. Once Teresa went in, she didnโt come out again. Jonathan tried to see her, but the receptionist told him Teresa didnโt want to meet and asked him to leave.
When work was over, Teresa drove straight to Miriamโs place. As soon as Teresa walked in, Michael ran over and threw himself into her arms. โMom, what took you so long? Iโve been waiting forever!โ Teresa ruffled his hair, apologizing softly, โSorry, kiddo, Iโm late.โ
Just as they were about to leave, Miriamโs phone rang. She cleared her throat and went into her room to answer it. When Miriam came back out, she pulled Teresa aside and whispered, โJonathanโs looking for you.โ
โIโm not seeing him,โ Teresa said firmly.
โWhatโs going on with you two? He even tracked you down to my place,โ Miriam asked, looking curious.
โNothing. I just canโt be bothered to see him or talk to him,โ Teresa replied, her face blank.
Miriam sighed. โI donโt know what happened between you two, but if you donโt want to see him, Iโll just tell him youโre not here.โ
โForget it, donโt make it so obvious. He already knows Iโm here, or he wouldnโt have called you,โ Teresa said.
โSo what should I do then? Just do nothing?โ Miriam asked.
โIโll stay at your place tonight. Iโll leave after heโs gone,โ Teresa said.
Miriam didnโt mind at all if Teresa stayed over. But early the next morning, Edward was coming over. Theyโd already made plans yesterday to spend the whole day at the water park together.
โIโm just worried Edward will show up and see you at my place. And Mikeโs here too,โ said Miriam.
โItโs fine. Iโll head out early and go to the office,โ Teresa replied.
Miriam didnโt buy it. โHow early can you even get up?โ
โI swear, Iโll be up by five,โ Teresa promised, but Miriam looked like sheโd never believe that in a million years.
That night, Teresa stayed over at Miriamโs. Every time she pulled back the curtains, sheโd spot that all-too-familiar car parked outside. Annoyed, she yanked the curtains shut again.
Miriam was a total gossip. Since Teresa wouldnโt spill what happened between her and Jonathan, Miriam figured Benny might know, so she called him up to ask. Benny was completely baffled. He had no idea what was going on. He thought, โAre they not speaking again? Or is it another fight?โ
โI thought youโd know,โ Miriam said. โIโve never seen Teresa so fed up with Jonathan. She wonโt even look at him.โ
โLet me check with him. If thereโs anything we can do to help, weโll do it,โ Benny said before hanging up.
