Chapter 457

After saying that, Jonathan turned and walked away. He couldn't be bothered with such a bastard.

Jennifer had been staying in the apartment she shared with Donald. She hadn't gone to work for the past few days, just holing up at home.

โ€œJennifer!โ€ Donaldโ€™s cheerful voice rang out as he entered, his arms full of groceries. He grinned, took her hand, and said, โ€œItโ€™s all sorted. The family causing trouble agreed to settle, and I talked to Mr. Foster. He saw how sincere I was and decided to give me some leeway. He promised not to fire you. So relax, okay?โ€

For the first time in days, a flicker of hope appeared in Jenniferโ€™s eyes. She asked, โ€œReally?โ€

Donald replied, โ€œOf course itโ€™s true. Iโ€™d never lie to you. You can go back to work tomorrow.โ€

Jennifer still couldnโ€™t quite believe it. She quickly asked, โ€œHow did you manage it?โ€

Donald said, โ€œThey wanted fifteen thousand to settle privately, so I just paid them.โ€

Half in doubt, Jennifer asked, โ€œIs that enough? Youโ€™re not tying yourself to me?โ€

Donald squeezed her hand again, looking at her with deep affection. He said, โ€œIโ€™m your husband now, Jen. Iโ€™m your whole world. You can trust me completely.โ€

Tears slid down Jenniferโ€™s cheeks. She was touched by his words, his sincerity, and his kindness. She muttered, โ€œDonaldโ€ฆโ€

All the pain and helplessness from the past few days finally broke through. Jennifer clung tightly to Donaldโ€™s shoulders. Her voice trembled as she said, โ€œI donโ€™t know how Iโ€™d live without you. Please, donโ€™t leave me. Never leave me.โ€

Donald smiled gently. He said, โ€œSilly, weโ€™re married now. How could I ever leave you?โ€

Jennifer said, โ€œNo matter what happens, promise me youโ€™ll never leave.โ€ More tears streamed down her face.

After sorting out Jenniferโ€™s situation, Donald headed to the kitchen to make dinner. He called Cheryl and said, โ€œJennifer said you havenโ€™t been answering her calls. Sheโ€™s worried. Sheโ€™s afraid something happened to you, and thatโ€™s why she made a mistake at work. Sheโ€™s just looking out for you, so donโ€™t take her concern the wrong way, okay?โ€

Cheryl wasnโ€™t buying it. She complained, โ€œI had heatstroke and spent a whole day in the hospital. How was I supposed to answer her calls?โ€

Hearing this, Donald was anxious. He asked, โ€œWhat? Did you have heatstroke? When did that happen?โ€

Cheryl explained, โ€œIt was the day before yesterday. I was out buying watermelon, and I got heatstroke. Itโ€™s really not a big deal.โ€

As she spoke, she broke out in a cold sweat, worried Donald might come all the way to Lonisburg to check on her. She hadnโ€™t even figured out if she wanted Serena to meet Donald yet.

She quickly added, โ€œLuckily, I had a friend with me when it happened, so Iโ€™m fine now. You donโ€™t have to worry about me.โ€

Donald let out a helpless chuckle. He thought, โ€˜Since Cheryl had a friend with her when she fainted, that meant the girl I saw collapsed alone definitely wasnโ€™t Cheryl.โ€™ He said, โ€œYou silly girl, itโ€™s hot out. Make sure you stay cool, alright?โ€

Cheryl replied, โ€œI will, I promise. Iโ€™m fine now, seriously. Just donโ€™t tell Mom and Dad, okay? Anyway, Iโ€™m off to eat with my friend. Talk later!โ€

Donald stared at his phone after the call ended. He thought, โ€˜I mustโ€™ve been overthinking it. The Jennifer I know might be cold and distant, but she will never just walk away from someone in trouble.โ€™

After Cheryl hung up the phone, a wave of sadness washed over her. She could tell that Donald didnโ€™t spoil her the way she needed, and it made her feel down.

She thought, โ€˜Back when Jennifer wasnโ€™t around, Donald and I would mess around and talk about everything, but now, everything has changed.โ€™
