Chapter 454
Jenniferโs face went pale. โOkay, Iโm coming out.โ
The area outside the ICU downstairs was crowded. Several doctors spoke with the patientโs family, but a large man with a beer belly impatiently shoved them aside.
โGet the doctor who operated on my wife out here. I want her here right now!โ he demanded.
Jennifer approached, saying seriously, โWhat do you want?โ
Those doctors quickly stepped aside. โDr. Nelson, youโre finally here.โ
The man, Blake Adams, immediately locked eyes on Jennifer, his face twisted with anger. โYouโre the one who put my wife in a coma, arenโt you?โ
Facing this furious man, Jennifer suddenly thought of her father, Philip. As a child, he would look at her the same way right before he hit her. She clenched her trembling fingers, but they still shook badly. Forcing herself to stay calm, she said, โBrynn was already in critical condition when she arrived. She lost a lot of blood, but it wasnโt my fault.โ
Before she could finish, Blake grabbed her by the collar.
โNot your fault? What kind of crap is that? My wife is bleeding out because of you, and now sheโs dying. Do you even deserve to call yourself a doctor? People like you shouldnโt be in this profession!โ he roared, spitting in Jenniferโs face.
He continued, โIf anything happens to my wife, I swear Iโll kill you. Money wonโt fix this.โ
โI promise, your wife will wake up, but Iโm telling you again, itโs not my fault,โ Jennifer insisted, struggling to break free from Blakeโs grip. With a few male doctors intervening, she managed to get away.
She went to the restroom and splashed water on her face. Tears streamed down her cheeks, but she quickly wiped them away.
Out in the hallway, two young nurses stood with their backs to her, whispering.
โDr. Nelsonโs mistake today was huge, and the whole department is talking about it. Looks like she wonโt be getting that department head position at the end of the year.โ
โDidnโt you see it? Mr. Foster stormed out of Dr. Nelsonโs office, absolutely furious. She should be glad if she doesnโt get demoted.โ
Jennifer walked past the two nurses with a blank face. When they saw her, they both coughed awkwardly, stopped gossiping, and hurried back to work.
Jennifer returned to her office. A dead silence hung in the airโthe kind where she could almost hear her own breathing, a stark contrast to the chaotic footsteps and arguments echoing from outside. Medical records and two potted plants sat on her desk.
Suddenly, she swept everything onto the floor. She lowered her head, her shoulders shaking uncontrollably as she broke down in silent sobs.
Just then, something occurred to her. She grabbed her phone from the couch and called Cheryl. Then she yelled, โThis is all your fault! Why didnโt you text me back or pick up my calls? I almost thought you were dead!โ
Cheryl was completely baffled. โAre you nuts? Iโm perfectly fine. Why do you keep talking nonsense? Seriously, whatโs wrong with you?โ
โYou might as well have just died of heat stroke!โ Jennifer snapped, all her anger pouring out at Cheryl.
โHold on, what did you say? Why did you curse me? Hello?โ Alone in a strange city, Cheryl hugged Serena tightly, tears streaming down her face. She couldnโt believe what she had just heard.
She just couldnโt figure out what Donald liked about Jennifer, a woman with an unpredictable temper. Still sobbing, Cheryl called Donald, who was away on a work trip and hadnโt returned yet.
