Chapter 414
Teresa licked her lips and avoided Michaelโs gaze. โIf I ask your real dad to come, we might not be able to go to the theme park together.โ
Michael puffed out his cheeks. โI still want to go! But I want to see Dad, too, even if itโs just for a second. Please, Mom?โ He shook Teresaโs arm so hard that she almost lost her balance.
She said, โSweetie, I havenโt talked to him in ages. Iโm not even sure I can reach him. If I canโt, can we just skip seeing him?โ
Only then did Michael let go. โMom, if you canโt find my dad, just call Mr. Lime. As long as Mr. Lime is with me on my birthday, Iโll be the happiest kid ever.โ
Teresa fell silent, muttering, โHow could I even face him now?โ She thought back to that night in Strico. Theyโd slept together. Heโd said if she got pregnant, she should keep the baby, and heโd even promised to take care of her. But Teresa had turned him down and flown back without saying goodbye. He hadnโt reached out since.
Lately, Teresa had been busy with Jenniferโs pregnancy and Cherylโs new baby, so she hadnโt had the time or the nerve to contact Jonathanโnot that there was much reason to, anyway. All she could do was assure Michael sheโd do her best to make it happen.
โMom, if you get in touch with my dad, then donโt invite Mr. Lime, okay? Iโm worried my dad will feel bad seeing someone as cool as Mr. Lime,โ Michael added.
Hearing that, Teresa didnโt know what to say.
Teresa invited Miriam to dinner to thank her for always helping care for Michael. Every time Teresa wasnโt home, Miriam had stepped in and done so much. She also invited Benny. Sheโd been saying sheโd treat him to a meal forever, but it had never actually happened until now.
Miriam showed up with Edward in tow. He was dressed down in a gray hoodie, looking super relaxed. He greeted Teresa with a โHi.โ
Teresa smiled. โOrder whatever you want tonight. Itโs on me.โ
Benny grinned. โIf Jonathan were here too, this would be the perfect group. Drinking by myself just isnโt as fun.โ
Edward jumped in. โIโll drink with you, Benny!โ
Benny waved him off. โForget it, Donald. Youโve never been able to hold your liquor.โ
Miriam looked like she was about to smack Benny. โCall him the wrong name one more time. I dare you.โ
Benny realized he was in the wrong and slapped himself lightly on the mouth. โI always mix up their names. Got any tricks to help me remember?โ
Miriam threw an arm around Edwardโs neck. โIsnโt it obvious? Eddie is so handsome. Donaldโs definitely not as cool as him.โ
Benny laughed. โI donโt think Donaldโs that much less attractive, though. Thatโs not gonna help me remember.โ
โIโve got a way for you,โ Teresa said lazily as she poured some coffee. She added, โJust think about it this way: Iโm divorced from Jonathan, and Miriamโs my best friend. Sheโs on my side, so thereโs no way sheโd marry a Lynn. Marrying a Lawrence makes perfect sense.โ
Benny snapped his fingers. โThatโs a good one. Iโll remember for sure now. I promise I wonโt mix them up again.โ
Miriam huffed. โYou better keep your word.โ
Benny chuckled and turned to Teresa. โSince Jonathanโs not here, youโll have to drink with me.โ
โI quit ages ago,โ Teresa waved him off. โHavenโt touched a drop in forever. Let Edward keep you company.โ
โBut you used to love drinking! What made you quit?โ Benny asked.
