Chapter 413
As she spoke, Teresa pulled a bank card from her wallet and placed it on the table next to Cheryl. โThereโs $220,000 on this card.โ Jennifer froze, suddenly realizing what Teresa was doing, and shot her a sharp look. But Teresa didnโt look at Jennifer. She turned to Cheryl and continued, โRaising a kid costs a lot. Just think of this as a gift for the baby.โ
Cherylโs eyes lit up. โTeresa, I canโt take that much money. If my brother finds out, heโll totally flip.โ
โDonโt worry. I wonโt tell anyone about this,โ Teresa said. That was exactly what Cheryl wanted to hear. She quickly took the card. โThen thank you from both me and the baby! Oh, Iโm thinking of naming her Serena Lynn. What do you guys think?โ
โSerenaโs a lovely name,โ Teresa said, giving the baby one last look. โSerena, Aunt Teresa is heading out now.โ
โIโve got something to take care of, so Iโll leave you here with Jennifer,โ Teresa said to Cheryl.
โTeresa!โ Jennifer hurried to catch up with her. โWhatโs the deal with that card you gave Cheryl?โ
โI tried to pay Cathy back for the house you bought, but she wouldnโt take the money, and she sent it back. So I gave it to Cheryl instead. Makes sense, right?โ Teresa said.
She continued, โNow that Cheryl and the baby are safe, I can finally relax. Iโm just the so-called sister-in-law here, so Iโm done meddling in your business. As for the baby youโre carrying, I really think you should reconsider whether you want to keep it. Iโm not going through this with you. Whatever happens, youโll have to deal with it yourself.โ
Jennifer grabbed her arm. โDonโt leave me here. Letโs go together.โ
But Teresa yanked Jenniferโs arm away. โGet a cab yourself. Weโre not headed the same way.โ
Hearing that, Jennifer let her go.
It was already very late by the time Teresa got home. Michael was fast asleep on the couch. When Teresa tried to carry him to his room, the little guy woke up.
โMom, why are you back so late? Aunt Isabel was hungry, so I made her some milk,โ he mumbled.
Teresa asked Michael, โWhat about you? What did you eat?โ
โI ordered takeout. Mom, did you eat?โ Michael looked up at her.
โI did. Iโm sorry, sweetheart, I promise Iโll spend more time with you from now on. I really mean it,โ Teresa said with guilt in her voice.
โWell, you always say that,โ Michael pouted.
โThis time I really mean it.โ Teresa pressed her forehead to Michaelโs. โMy little muffin, your birthdayโs coming up. How about we invite Miriam and take you to Eleneburg to celebrate?โ
โTeresa, where are you guys going? I want to go, too!โ Isabel had woken up and was hugging Teresaโs leg. When Teresa didnโt answer, Isabel pouted. โMichael, bro. Tell Teresa to take me with you!โ
That snapped Teresa back. โHeโs your nephew. You canโt call him โbroโ; that messes up the family tree,โ she corrected.
Michael chimed in, โMom, Aunt Isabel can call my dad โbro,โ right?โ
Teresa nodded, thinking, โThatโs my boy. So smart.โ
Isabel tilted her head. โWhereโs Michaelโs dad? Iโve never seen him.โ
Michael spread his hands. โMy dad doesnโt want me anymore.โ
Teresa froze for a second and then quietly asked Michael, โWhy do you think that?โ
โMichael, didnโt I tell you? Your dad is old and ugly. It was I who didnโt want him,โ Teresa explained.
Michael shook his head. โMom, isnโt it really that Dad doesnโt want us? Otherwise, he wouldโve come to see me at least once, right?โ
โNo, sweetheart, really. It was I who left him. Your dad never stopped wanting you,โ Teresa said, word by word.
Michael wrinkled his little nose. โMom, then where is Dad? Can I see him on my birthday? Just once, please? Youโre the best, Mom.โ
