Chapter 391
Teresa couldnโt take it anymore and called Jonathan. โHeโs just Jenniferโs friend, not my boyfriend. We just had dinner; Jennifer is trying to play matchmaker, but I havenโt said yes. Why do you always jump to conclusions? Do you really think Iโd just date anyone?โ
She heard a sharp intake of breath on the other end. Teresaโs heart tightened. โWhatโs wrong? Are you okay?โ
โMy stomach hurts. Maybe you just pissed me off too much,โ Jonathan said.
โYou probably drank too much,โ Teresa said. โDo you have any medicine at your place? Or is there anyone there who can help you?โ
โIโm living alone at Strico Bay Heights. Iโm just here for a few days on business. Who knew youโd make me this mad? Maybe Iโll just let the pain kill me,โ Jonathan said.
Teresa was left speechless.
It was one in the morning, and taxis were scarce. Even if she could get one, she wouldnโt feel safe. So Teresa walked about two miles, then found a shared bike and followed the GPS the rest of the way.
By the time she got to Jonathanโs place, it was already past two. She was carrying a bag of medicine sheโd picked up at a convenience store. โGood thing itโs summer and not cold at night. If it were winter, I wouldnโt bother coming to save you.โ
โI just made myself some gruel; Iโm feeling a lot better now. Why didnโt you tell me you were coming? How did you even get here?โ Jonathan asked.
โI walked part of the way and then took a shared bike. I didnโt feel safe taking a cab this late,โ Teresa said.
Jonathan stared hard at Teresa for a few seconds, something flickering in his eyes.
Teresa sighed. โAs long as youโre okay. I almost thought you were going to die here.โ
โYou came all the way here just to curse me?โ Jonathan shot back.
โI donโt have time to joke around with you. Iโve got an early business meeting tomorrow. Are you really alright now?โ Teresa asked.
Just then, Jonathanโs stomach started acting up again. His gastroenteritis was flaring. Teresa grabbed his car keys and rushed him to the hospital.
On the way, she still couldnโt figure out why he didnโt just hire a maid. Jonathan just said he didnโt like having strangers around.
She spent the whole night looking after him, eventually falling asleep with her head resting on the edge of his bed. She was supposed to meet a client at nine, but when Teresa finally opened her eyes, it was already half past nine. She hurried to the meeting spot, but the client was already gone.
Teresa called the client. โMr. Frazier, this is Teresa Johnston from Teresouth Groupโฆโ
โMs. Johnston, you donโt need to say anything. I donโt do business with people who stand me up. Letโs just end things here,โ said the client.
The line went dead, leaving only the busy tone in her ear. Teresaโs face turned pale. She had gone through so much trouble getting there, only to find it was all in vain. The flights and accommodation cost a fortuneโฆ If sheโd known, she would have just sent a subordinate. There was no need to come in person.
Jonathan had been trying to reach her for a while. When Teresa got back to the hospital, he noticed how down she looked and asked, โWhat happened?โ
โNothing.โ
โSince youโre feeling better, letโs head out,โ Teresa replied.
โThe deal didnโt go through, did it?โ Jonathan said, having just seen Bennyโs message. Benny had mentioned Teresa was also in Strica for work, so it had to be for business talks.
Teresa said, โI was an hour late for the meeting. I overslept. The client said I wasnโt reliable and canceled the deal. Itโs my own fault; if itโs over, itโs over.โ
โYou only overslept because you were taking care of me. Give me their number; Iโll talk to them,โ Jonathan said.
โNo need,โ Teresa said. โYou saved me at the bar, and I took care of you all night. Weโre even. Itโs not your fault; itโs mine.โ
Her words had a double meaning. At least, when it came to hiding the child, she admitted she felt guilty.
Jonathan said, โJust hand me the phone. Iโll talk to them. Otherwise, youโll just end up going back empty-handed for nothing.โ
