Teresa raised an eyebrow, looking at him as if he were insane. “Are you insane? Do you even know me? We’ve only met twice. And now you’re proposing?”
Sanford smirked. “I’m serious. Sure, I don’t know you that well, but your sister Jennifer’s been my best friend for years. We trust each other. I choose you to be my wife.”
But the excuse was lame to Teresa. “You might not care that I have a kid, but I’m not cool with being Jennifer’s sloppy seconds.” Teresa turned to leave when Sanford shouted, “I’m going to go after you.” This made Teresa’s eyes blaze with anger.
Donald’s parents dragged him back to the Lynin residence. “Donald, have a seat. Your mother and I have questions,” said Werner.
Donald frowned at their grave faces. “What’s going on?”
Cathy hesitated, her face pinched as if she’d tasted something sour. “Cheryl called. She hasn’t returned to Harigh because she’s been sick, and her business is bleeding money. Lost six thousand dollars. Too ashamed to tell us.”
Donald frowned. “How? She’s running a tutoring business. It’s great.”
“Not enough students. Rent’s killing her,” Cathy sighed.
“I see. Cheryl never told me. I’ll call her.” Six thousand was nothing to Donald—he had savings. But guilt gnawed at him. Cheryl was his sister, and he’d been too distracted by Jennifer to notice her struggles. “Is that why you called me back?”
Cathy and Werner shared a tense glance. Werner leaned forward. “Your mother gave you 150 thousand dollars, and I gave you 100 thousand. That’s 250 thousand total, all for you to buy a car.”
“But that Audi A7 you bought didn’t cost that much. Where’s the rest? Still in your account, or gone!”
“Just say what you mean, Dad.” Donald wasn’t clueless—he could tell this was about money.
Werner continued, “We saw you and Jennifer at an apartment complex yesterday. Not the wedding apartment. We asked around. You two bought another place behind our backs.”
Donald fell silent. He’d paid the entire down payment for Newure Garden, just because Jennifer wanted a home of her own in Nareigh. She wanted to leave it to Teresa someday.
“Yes, we bought a place in Newure Garden,” Donald admitted.
Cathy scoffed. “Donald, why keep it secret? It’s a big issue. Houses there aren’t cheap—about 5,000 dollars per square meter. Did you two buy it together? The deed’s only in Jennifer’s name. If you split, that’s her property before marriage, you know?”
Donald frowned. “Who plans for divorce? I love her. I didn’t overthink it.”
Werner cut in. “Your mother is just concerned about you. How much did you put in? Did you use all the leftover car money?” Werner and Cathy didn’t know Donald had blown their money on a down payment and borrowed the car money from Jonathan.
“Mom, Dad, Jennifer’s family. Why nickel-and-dime?”
Neither of his parents said a word, but their faces were anything but happy.
“This is a big deal. You should’ve talked to us first. If we hadn’t asked you today, would you have ever told us?” Werner questioned.

Donald sighed. “Dad, I’m an adult. I can make my own decisions. I don’t need permission.”
“Love’s turned you stupid,” Werner shouted, and then immediately started blaming Jennifer. “And Jennifer’s not innocent either—why are you burying this house? If we’d known about it, we would never have let you marry her.”
“I wanted to,” Donald said, clenching his fists at his sides. “I’ll pay you back, okay!”
Seeing Donald prevent him from blaming Jennifer, Werner jabbed a finger at him. “On your salary? Your mother and I broke our backs saving for your wedding. You think money grows on trees?”
Donald shot back, “You forced me into medicine. I wanted to start a business like Jonathan and make real money, but you said I wasn’t cut out for it and I’d fail. Irene backed Jonathan—even she took risks. But you?”
