Chapter 379
Teresa didnโt press for details and got ready to leave. Jennifer stopped her. โIโm good now. Why donโt you have dinner with me before you go?โ
Teresa refused. โNo need. Evelyn asked me to bring you this bank card. Otherwise, I wouldnโt have come in person. She said the password is your birthday.โ
Jennifer owned. โTake half the money. Thereโs 300,000 dollars on the card. Letโs split it.โ
Teresa sneered. โNo thanks, Iโm not interested in your money.โ
Jennifer said, โYou donโt have to act all high and mighty in front of me. I know your company only makes a few million a year, and after expenses, you barely get 300,000 dollars. Donโt pretend money means nothing to you.โ
โSo why are you giving it to me? Because you feel guilty? Or do you think I helped you get your happy ending?โ
โThink whatever you want. Youโre my sister, and more than anyone, I want you to be happy. Like I said, itโs fine if you donโt understand me. I know who I care about, and thatโs enough.โ
Teresa was silent for a few seconds before she said, โI really donโt want the money. Itโs unreasonable to share your dowry with me.โ
โYouโre about to marry into the Lynn family. We were never close, and weโll only get more distant from here on out. Letโs just leave it at that.โ
โYouโฆโ Jennifer sighed, then forced a smile. โHow about I set you up with someone? My classmate, Sanford. What do you think?โ
Teresa retorted, โAre you nuts, or did you hit your head? I have two kids, you know.โ
โIโll tell him that. You donโt have to mention that youโre pregnant now. Just let him know you have a three-year-old son. One more kid wonโt make a difference. I know Sanford. He doesnโt care about it.โ
Teresa sneered, โLet me get this straight. You want to pawn off on me a guy you wouldnโt date, huh? What do you take me for? No dumping trash on my doorstep.โ
Teresa slammed the door and left. Jennifer was so angry that her face went pale. She thought, โWhat did she mean? A guy I donโt want? Sanfordโs family is great. I just donโt like him; thatโs all.โ
Teresa got home to find Michael asleep at the table, his head resting on his arms. Spread out in front of him was a drawingโJonathan in a suit, just like in their family photo.
Teresa stared at Michaelโs nose, so much like Jonathanโs. That night, she couldnโt sleep. She stepped out onto the balcony for some air, only to catch a glimpse of a familiar Maybach driving away.
She was surprised, not knowing when heโd come by again, or why he left without telling her. On impulse, she ran downstairs, but the Maybach was already gone. Teresa let out a sigh. โWhy am I chasing after him like a fool?โ
The next day was the day Jonathan was leaving Nardigh. Teresa barely slept that night. Early that morning, she saw a message from him: (My flightโs today. I might come back for Donald and Jenniferโs wedding, or maybe not. Otherwise, wonโt be back.)
Teresa stared at the message. (What time is your flight?) She replied.
Another message from Jonathan popped up: (Will you see me off?)
Their messages crossed at the same time. Teresa replied with a simple word: (Yeah)
Jonathan sent Teresa his flight details. Teresa went to the airport. Jonathan didnโt bring too much luggage. Teresa asked where he was headed. โArchule,โ he answered. โPeterโs over there; figured Iโd talk some things over with him.โ
โIs Peter still single?โ Teresa asked.
โNow Iโm single too. I keep him company,โ Jonathan joked.
Teresa couldnโt help but think, Peterโs way older than you. How ridiculous that you want to keep him company.
Teresa said, โYou should find yourself a new wife. I wasnโt joking at the family dinner. I really hope you meet someone better.โ
โIโll get married when my mom does,โ Jonathan said.
โHuh?โ Teresa looked up at him, curious.
Jonathan let out a soft laugh. โWhen my mom gets married, and you do too. Maybe then Iโll get married.โ He smiled when he was speaking, but Teresa could tell he wasnโt joking.
The boarding announcement came over the speakers. Teresa urged, โYour flightโs about to leave.โ
โYeah,โ Jonathan had already checked his baggage, so now he was carrying nothing. He put his hands in his pockets and searched for something. After a few steps, he turned back, pulled out a jewelry box, and opened it.
The ring inside sparkled. Jonathan looked straight at Teresa. โYou threw our wedding ring into the river. I always said you were impossible. Back then, I couldnโt afford anything better. Now, take this. Weโre really even now.โ
Tears welled up in Teresaโs eyes, and she felt choked. Heโd probably never known sheโd taken that ring out of the river. This is humanโact on impulse, make mistakes, and then regret them.
A tear fell onto her shoe and quickly evaporated. She shook her head, regaining her composure. โYouโre about to leave. Why are you giving me a ring? I donโt want it.โ
โTake it,โ Jonathan said, pressing the ring into her hand. โIf you donโt want it, toss it or sell it. Up to you.โ
Teresa said, โYou can save it for your next proposal.โ
Jonathan almost gritted his teeth. โWhen I get remarried, Iโll buy my next wife an even better one.โ
Teresaโs hand clenched around the ring so tightly that her palm hurt. She didnโt say anything, just accepted it.
Jonathanโs expression was complicated. Sheโd accepted the ring, but he wasnโt happy. This wasnโt the ending heโd hoped for when he came back to Nardigh. But life never goes as planned.
He couldnโt help but pull her into a tight hug, like it was the last time. His hand rested on her soft waist, holding her close. His face was buried in her fragrant hair.
Before Teresa could push him away, he let go, turned, and walked off without looking back. Teresa kept her eyes on his back. He once looked back. Then, all of a sudden, she felt a fetal movement in her bellyโthe first time sheโd felt the baby move since getting pregnant with her second child. She instinctively placed her hand over her stomach.
When Teresa got back to Rosary Estates, she noticed a man pacing around her building.
Chapter 379 (continued)
As soon as she parked and got out of the car, Sanford walked over. โTeresa,โ he said.
A clear look of impatience flashed in Teresaโs eyes, but she just nodded politely and headed upstairs.
โI did some digging. Jonathanโs your ex-husband, right?โ Sanford said.
Teresa didnโt answer him.
โAnd,โ Sanford continued, โyou two have a son, donโt you?โ
Teresa, about to step into the elevator, suddenly paused.
Sanford, on the other hand, stayed calm. โJennifer told meโฆ I told her I was interested in you, and theโฆโ
โIs she nuts?โ Teresa cursed Jennifer in her heart.
Sanford spoke slowly and clearly, โMy answer is, I donโt care that you have a son. Letโs get married.โ
