Chapter 335
โPretend we didnโt meet?โ Jennifer mused, heartbroken. She asked, โTeresa, do you know how much Iโve missed you? Iโve been looking for you this whole time.โ
Teresa averted her gaze. โArenโt you busy being all lovey-dovey with Donald? Why would you still care about me or bother looking for me?โ
Jennifer replied, โYou really think Iโd just forget about you because Iโm dating someone? You know how much I care about you.โ She glanced at Teresaโs belly. Its flatness made her feel even worse. โItโs been three months, and your belly is still flat. Wouldnโt it be better if you stayed in Fernlandia? Or at least let me know you were here, so I could cook for you.โ
โI already mastered cooking,โ Teresa said.
โOh, really? So you can cook now? What, just a couple of simple stir-fries? I bet thatโs all. And you came for your checkup alone? Whereโs Mike? Didnโt he come with you?โ Jennifer asked.
โHeโs home,โ Teresa said. She didnโt want to talk and said coolly, โIf thereโs nothing else, Iโm leaving.โ
โWait, Teresaโฆโ Jennifer said.
Rebecca appeared, observing the stubborn Teresa and attempting to mediate. โIf I hadnโt chatted with Jennifer, I wouldnโt have known you two were siblings. I always felt you looked alike. Now youโre pregnant, so donโt be immature. Just go home with her,โ Rebecca said.
โImmature?โ Teresa looked at Rebecca, upset. โRight, Rebecca, itโs all my fault. Iโm pregnant, but I donโt listen to Jennifer. I should be blamed, okay?โ
She should have realized sooner. Two people with the same last name, Nelson. They must be related.
Jennifer looked at Teresa disappointedly. โSorry, Rebecca. Teresaโs so immature and causing you trouble.โ
Teresa was speechless and turned to leave. Jennifer tried to catch up, but it was too late. Teresa had already gotten in her car, floored the gas, and sped off.
Watching Teresa drive away so fast, Jennifer felt anxious and angry. Her face went pale when Donald arrivedโheโd been nearby and came to find her.
โWhatโs wrong?โ Donald asked, getting out of the car. He put his arm around Jenniferโs shoulders. โWerenโt you catching up with Rebecca? Didnโt go well?โ
Jennifer sighed. โI saw Teresa. Sheโs been hiding out here. She actually lives nearby.โ
โReally?โ Donald looked puzzled. โWhere did you see her? Where is she now?โ
โAt the hospital. She was there forโโ Jennifer stopped herself before saying โa prenatal checkup.โ Right now, she was the only one who knew Teresa was pregnant. โShe was in the area. I saw her, trying to catch up and talk, but she just drove off at a fast speed. It pissed me off. I worry about her every day, but she just did thisโฆโ
Donald pulled Jennifer closer. โDid you speak to her in that tone again? You always do this, never saying things nicely, even when you mean well.โ
Jennifer leaned into Donaldโs arms, grateful for his support. โIโm not going back to Nareigh for now,โ she said. โTeresaโs definitely living nearby. Now I donโt have to worry about her running off again. Iโll stay here and wait for her to come back with me.โ
Donald was quiet for a few seconds. โI think I still have the chance to ask for leave this month.โ
โYou should go back. Iโll be fine here on my own,โ Jennifer said.
โNo way. If so, Iโm staying too. Iโll book us a hotel,โ Donald said. While booking a hotel, he contacted Jonathan, figuring he should let him know theyโd found Teresa. He didnโt realize Jonathan was actually the first to find her and had been quietly keeping it to himself.
โJennifer is here too?โ Jonathan asked Donald, frowning at the confirmation. โIโll arrange the hotel for you.โ
โNo need, Jonathan. Iโll just book a room myself,โ Donald replied.
โI never checked out of my hotel room anyway. You can live in.โ
โOh, thanks. If I find out where Teresaโs staying, Iโll let you know right away,โ Donald said.
Jonathan was silent. Heโd planned to return to Nareighโheโd been working at the branch office too long. But with Teresa here, he hadnโt left. Now, hearing Jennifer had arrived, he wanted to leave, but he couldnโt.
Teresa drove home just in time. Michael ran over, hugging her leg and asking her to check out his gameโheโd just leveled up again. Teresa barely glanced at it, then settled him and headed straight to her room.
โHey, Teresa, whatโs wrong? Did something happen?โ Miriam asked, sensing something was off.
โJennifer saw me,โ Teresa said, casually running her fingers through her hair.
โAnd then?โ Miriam asked, sitting beside her and wrapping an arm around her shoulder. Teresa told her how Jennifer had grabbed her hand, scolding her for being immature.
Miriam was quiet for a few seconds. โOkay, I take back what I said about her not going to look after you. As I see, sheโll still discipline you even when sheโs old.โ
Teresa didnโt say anything. Sheโd left Nareigh hoping to live on her own, but somehow everyone she knew found herโfirst Jonathan, then Benny, Miriam, and now Jennifer.
Just as Teresa was worried, Michael shouted, โItโs Mr. Limeโs car!โ He bounced over to Teresa, tugging at her sleeve. โMom, look! Mr. Limeโs car.โ
Teresa grabbed the binoculars. On the balcony, she saw Jonathanโs car parked at the gate of the community. โWhat does he want at this hour?โ she wondered.
โIโm heading downstairs for a bit. Miriam, can you keep an eye on Mike for me?โ she said.
Miriam nodded, holding onto Michaelโs arm. Michael pouted, watching Teresa go down to meet Jonathan, who had just parked and was about to come up. But Teresa was already downstairs. She stopped him and asked, โWhatโs the matter?โ
Jonathan asked directly, โDid Jennifer come looking for you?โ
Teresa was surprised. โWho told you that?โ
โDonald told me. What did Jennifer say? Does she want you to go back? And what do you think of it?โ Jonathan asked.
โI donโt want to go back,โ Teresa replied.
โStill not going back?โ Jonathan asked, raising his eyebrows. โHavenโt you had enough? You got harassed by a coworkerโs brother and almost got drugged by the old principal. Your jobโs a hassle; the pay sucks. So whatโs so great about staying here?โ
โI will stay,โ Teresa responded.
โWhat? What do you even like about this place? Whatโs so bad about Nareigh?โ Jonathan asked.
โIโll tell you why,โ Teresa said seriously. โI donโt wanna live with Jennifer, I donโt wanna lose my freedom, and I sure as heck donโt wanna get picked on by your mom. And I definitely donโt wanna get tangled up with you again.โ
