Chapter 335

โ€˜Pretend we didnโ€™t meet?โ€™ Jennifer mused, heartbroken. She asked, โ€œTeresa, do you know how much Iโ€™ve missed you? Iโ€™ve been looking for you this whole time.โ€

Teresa averted her gaze. โ€œArenโ€™t you busy being all lovey-dovey with Donald? Why would you still care about me or bother looking for me?โ€

Jennifer replied, โ€œYou really think Iโ€™d just forget about you because Iโ€™m dating someone? You know how much I care about you.โ€ She glanced at Teresaโ€™s belly. Its flatness made her feel even worse. โ€œItโ€™s been three months, and your belly is still flat. Wouldnโ€™t it be better if you stayed in Fernlandia? Or at least let me know you were here, so I could cook for you.โ€

โ€œI already mastered cooking,โ€ Teresa said.

โ€œOh, really? So you can cook now? What, just a couple of simple stir-fries? I bet thatโ€™s all. And you came for your checkup alone? Whereโ€™s Mike? Didnโ€™t he come with you?โ€ Jennifer asked.

โ€œHeโ€™s home,โ€ Teresa said. She didnโ€™t want to talk and said coolly, โ€œIf thereโ€™s nothing else, Iโ€™m leaving.โ€

โ€œWait, Teresaโ€ฆโ€ Jennifer said.

Rebecca appeared, observing the stubborn Teresa and attempting to mediate. โ€œIf I hadnโ€™t chatted with Jennifer, I wouldnโ€™t have known you two were siblings. I always felt you looked alike. Now youโ€™re pregnant, so donโ€™t be immature. Just go home with her,โ€ Rebecca said.

โ€œImmature?โ€ Teresa looked at Rebecca, upset. โ€œRight, Rebecca, itโ€™s all my fault. Iโ€™m pregnant, but I donโ€™t listen to Jennifer. I should be blamed, okay?โ€

She should have realized sooner. Two people with the same last name, Nelson. They must be related.

Jennifer looked at Teresa disappointedly. โ€œSorry, Rebecca. Teresaโ€™s so immature and causing you trouble.โ€

Teresa was speechless and turned to leave. Jennifer tried to catch up, but it was too late. Teresa had already gotten in her car, floored the gas, and sped off.

Watching Teresa drive away so fast, Jennifer felt anxious and angry. Her face went pale when Donald arrivedโ€”heโ€™d been nearby and came to find her.

โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong?โ€ Donald asked, getting out of the car. He put his arm around Jenniferโ€™s shoulders. โ€œWerenโ€™t you catching up with Rebecca? Didnโ€™t go well?โ€

Jennifer sighed. โ€œI saw Teresa. Sheโ€™s been hiding out here. She actually lives nearby.โ€

โ€œReally?โ€ Donald looked puzzled. โ€œWhere did you see her? Where is she now?โ€

โ€œAt the hospital. She was there forโ€”โ€ Jennifer stopped herself before saying โ€œa prenatal checkup.โ€ Right now, she was the only one who knew Teresa was pregnant. โ€œShe was in the area. I saw her, trying to catch up and talk, but she just drove off at a fast speed. It pissed me off. I worry about her every day, but she just did thisโ€ฆโ€

Donald pulled Jennifer closer. โ€œDid you speak to her in that tone again? You always do this, never saying things nicely, even when you mean well.โ€

Jennifer leaned into Donaldโ€™s arms, grateful for his support. โ€œIโ€™m not going back to Nareigh for now,โ€ she said. โ€œTeresaโ€™s definitely living nearby. Now I donโ€™t have to worry about her running off again. Iโ€™ll stay here and wait for her to come back with me.โ€

Donald was quiet for a few seconds. โ€œI think I still have the chance to ask for leave this month.โ€

โ€œYou should go back. Iโ€™ll be fine here on my own,โ€ Jennifer said.

โ€œNo way. If so, Iโ€™m staying too. Iโ€™ll book us a hotel,โ€ Donald said. While booking a hotel, he contacted Jonathan, figuring he should let him know theyโ€™d found Teresa. He didnโ€™t realize Jonathan was actually the first to find her and had been quietly keeping it to himself.

โ€œJennifer is here too?โ€ Jonathan asked Donald, frowning at the confirmation. โ€œIโ€™ll arrange the hotel for you.โ€

โ€œNo need, Jonathan. Iโ€™ll just book a room myself,โ€ Donald replied.

โ€œI never checked out of my hotel room anyway. You can live in.โ€

โ€œOh, thanks. If I find out where Teresaโ€™s staying, Iโ€™ll let you know right away,โ€ Donald said.

Jonathan was silent. Heโ€™d planned to return to Nareighโ€”heโ€™d been working at the branch office too long. But with Teresa here, he hadnโ€™t left. Now, hearing Jennifer had arrived, he wanted to leave, but he couldnโ€™t.

Teresa drove home just in time. Michael ran over, hugging her leg and asking her to check out his gameโ€”heโ€™d just leveled up again. Teresa barely glanced at it, then settled him and headed straight to her room.

โ€œHey, Teresa, whatโ€™s wrong? Did something happen?โ€ Miriam asked, sensing something was off.

โ€œJennifer saw me,โ€ Teresa said, casually running her fingers through her hair.

โ€œAnd then?โ€ Miriam asked, sitting beside her and wrapping an arm around her shoulder. Teresa told her how Jennifer had grabbed her hand, scolding her for being immature.

Miriam was quiet for a few seconds. โ€œOkay, I take back what I said about her not going to look after you. As I see, sheโ€™ll still discipline you even when sheโ€™s old.โ€

Teresa didnโ€™t say anything. Sheโ€™d left Nareigh hoping to live on her own, but somehow everyone she knew found herโ€”first Jonathan, then Benny, Miriam, and now Jennifer.

Just as Teresa was worried, Michael shouted, โ€œItโ€™s Mr. Limeโ€™s car!โ€ He bounced over to Teresa, tugging at her sleeve. โ€œMom, look! Mr. Limeโ€™s car.โ€

Teresa grabbed the binoculars. On the balcony, she saw Jonathanโ€™s car parked at the gate of the community. โ€˜What does he want at this hour?โ€™ she wondered.

โ€œIโ€™m heading downstairs for a bit. Miriam, can you keep an eye on Mike for me?โ€ she said.

Miriam nodded, holding onto Michaelโ€™s arm. Michael pouted, watching Teresa go down to meet Jonathan, who had just parked and was about to come up. But Teresa was already downstairs. She stopped him and asked, โ€œWhatโ€™s the matter?โ€

Jonathan asked directly, โ€œDid Jennifer come looking for you?โ€

Teresa was surprised. โ€œWho told you that?โ€

โ€œDonald told me. What did Jennifer say? Does she want you to go back? And what do you think of it?โ€ Jonathan asked.

โ€œI donโ€™t want to go back,โ€ Teresa replied.

โ€œStill not going back?โ€ Jonathan asked, raising his eyebrows. โ€œHavenโ€™t you had enough? You got harassed by a coworkerโ€™s brother and almost got drugged by the old principal. Your jobโ€™s a hassle; the pay sucks. So whatโ€™s so great about staying here?โ€

โ€œI will stay,โ€ Teresa responded.

โ€œWhat? What do you even like about this place? Whatโ€™s so bad about Nareigh?โ€ Jonathan asked.

โ€œIโ€™ll tell you why,โ€ Teresa said seriously. โ€œI donโ€™t wanna live with Jennifer, I donโ€™t wanna lose my freedom, and I sure as heck donโ€™t wanna get picked on by your mom. And I definitely donโ€™t wanna get tangled up with you again.โ€
