Irene tugged on Cathyโs sleeve and whispered, loud enough for Jennifer to hear, โCathy, you better keep an eye on your money. Donโt give Donald too much, or heโll spend it all on her.โ
โJonathanโs the same,โ she continued. โMakes a little money and spends it all on Teresa. Those two sisters are exactly alike.โ
Jennifer slammed her fork down, her expression icy. โIrene, havenโt you said enough?โ
โDad, did you hear that?โ Irene exclaimed. โShe yelled at me! She has no manners at all. At least Teresa knows to be polite. But her big sister? Even worse. Sheโs harder to handle and totally unfit to be our familyโs daughter-in-law.โ
Jennifer stood, staring Irene down. โIโm here to celebrate my boyfriendโs motherโs birthday, not to put up with your attitude. Who do you think you are to lecture me? You really think Iโm desperate to marry into your family? Honestly, this meal is hard to swallow.โ
Jennifer turned and walked out without a backward glance. โJenniferโโ Donald called, hurrying after her.
Cathy took another sip of water. Cheryl, quickly assessing the situation, slid back her chair. โIโIโll go check on her,โ she mumbled, then dashed out. Cathy, preoccupied with Donaldโs situation, didnโt notice anything unusual about Cherylโs departure.
Hayden stood, walked to Irene, and slapped her hard across the face. The room fell silent.
โYou just canโt stop running your mouth, can you?โ Hayden shouted. โEven the ducks in the river are quieter than you!โ
โDad,โ Werner interjected, โplease calm down.โ
Hayden pushed him aside, pointing at Irene. โYouโve ruined a perfectly good family dinner.โ
Irene clutched her cheek. โIโm just thinking of the Lynn family, thinking of Donald. Do you really want a woman like that joining the family?โ
โWhatโs wrong with her? Sheโs a good kid, and Teresaโs sister. Whatโs the problem?โ Hayden replied.
โGood? You think those Johnston sisters are any good? Oneโs a Johnston, the other a Nelson. You heard Donald call her Hannah? Thatโs just to keep you happy. Her real name is Jennifer Nelson.โ
Hayden looked at Cathy, who finally said, โShe really is Teresaโs sister, and yes, her name is Jennifer. Sheโs also called Hannah. Donald doesnโt care, so I donโt have much to say.โ
Hayden seemed to regain his composure. โWhatever her name is, as long as my grandson likes her, thatโs all that matters.โ
Irene let out a cold snort. โTheir mother has been married twice, and they are no better. Marriage isnโt the same as dating, you know.โ
Hayden was furious. โGet out! You already messed up Jonathanโs marriage. Did you think I didnโt know? Now youโre trying to ruin Donaldโs too. Like father, like daughter. From now on, stay away from our family dinners.โ
Irene stormed out, tears streaming down her face. Cathy hurried to comfort her, while Werner patted Haydenโs chest, trying to calm him.
Hayden propped himself up with his cane and grumbled, โCanโt even get through a meal in peace. Irene is nothing but trouble.โ
โDad, Ireneโs had it tough too,โ Werner said. โMy brotherโs been gone for years, and sheโs always done her best raising Jonathan.โ
Hayden snorted. โJonathan didnโt turn out well because of her, and thatโs all thanks to our familyโs values. With a father like Gordon, what do you expect about her? Sheโs his daughter, and the apple doesnโt fall far from the tree.โ
Werner asked, โDad, what did Gordon ever do to you?โ
Hayden huffed, keeping the old grudges to himself. Some things were better left unsaid.
โLet go,โ Jennifer snapped, yanking her hand from Donaldโs grip and heading for her car. Donald quickly followed, worried she might drive recklessly. She pulled over in front of the Simpson Law Firm, and he stopped behind her.
Jennifer walked to Donald, pulled out her phone, and transferred thirty thousand dollars to him. โThereโs still one hundred fifty thousand left. Iโll pay you back little by little,โ she said firmly.
Donald frowned. โJenniferโฆ donโt do this. You know Iโm serious about you.โ
Jennifer stood her ground. โI have to write you an IOU right now. I need to pay you back. I canโt let Irene go around saying Iโm just after your money.โ
โYou were the one who insisted on paying the down payment for me. I never said I wouldnโt pay you back. Well, here you go. Iโve paid you some now. As for the rest, Iโll pay off slowly,โ she added.
Donald, becoming annoyed, said, โJennifer, arenโt you going a bit too far? Do you know how much that hurts?โ
Jennifer shot back, โAnd what about Irene? Her words didnโt hurt? I get it now. I canโt owe you a single cent. If she finds out, sheโll talk behind my back and drag Teresa into it too. Teresaโs all Iโve got. I canโt let her get caught up in this with me.โ
Donald sighed helplessly. โIrene just has a sharp tongue. Sheโs only my aunt, and we only see her a few times a year at family gatherings. My parents, my grandpa, and I all like you. Canโt you just ignore her?โ
โThatโs just how Irene is,โ Jennifer muttered. โI canโt believe Teresa put up with her for two years. My poor Teresa.โ
Donald tried to take Jenniferโs hand again, but she impatiently shook him off. A flash of exhaustion crossed Donaldโs eyes.
