Chapter 372
Lemira smirked. โSince youโre so concerned about me not finding a lawyer, why donโt you just admit to the judge that it was all your doing? Then I wonโt need a lawyer at all.โ
Alaric instantly clammed up.
โWhat, cat got your tongue? Werenโt you all โbig brother knows bestโ a second ago? Now that itโs actually for my benefit, youโre not so keen?โ
Lemiraโs words cut deep, landing straight in Alaricโs heart.
Taking a deep breath, Alaric said, โLemira, come on, Iโm your brother. Are you really going to throw me under the bus?โ
He knew he had messed up before. He also realized Evelina was no saint. Why couldnโt Lemira just give him a chance to make things right?
Lemira laughed. โLetโs get one thing straight. Youโre taking the fall for Evelinaโs schemes, pushed into the spotlight by Asher. Itโs not me trying to lock you away. They are the ones who want you behind bars, to carry their sins.โ
Maricโs face paled, struggling to maintain composure. Choking up, he said, โI truly want to make it up to you.โ
Lemira felt a wave of disgust. Why couldnโt these people be genuine? Why the facade?
Fuming, she turned to Alaric. โAlright, you want a chance to make amends? Turn yourself in to the judge.โ
After Lemiraโs suggestion, she saw Alaricโs face freeze, then quickly avoid her gaze. See? This was his so-called โmaking amends.โ Apologies wrapped in insincerity, as nauseating as expired medicine.
Lemiraโs lips curled in a cold smirk. โWhatโs the matter? Canโt do it?โ
Alaric stumbled over his words. โItโs not that I canโt, but if Iโm locked up, how can I make it up to you?โ
โYour imprisonment will be the biggest amends. After that, I might consider overlooking everything youโve done before. How about it?โ
Alaric fell silent again.
Just then, Asher turned around and loudly said, โAlaric, what are you dawdling for? Why bother with someone so ungrateful?โ
Alaric sent Lemira a guilty glance before following Asher, his steps awkward. Lemira watched his retreating back with a mocking expression.
The manager approached, his expression complex. โLemira, how can your family be so deceitful?โ
No real apologies. No sincerity in making amends. All these supposed gestures of reconciliation came at the expense of Lemiraโs interests. What kind of family was this?
Seeing her colleaguesโ expressions, Lemira said, โIโm used to it. I know what theyโre like. Letโs go, we should head in too.โ
She had messaged Thaddeus earlier, and he had said the lawyer would arrive soon. With that in mind, there was nothing to fear.
Lemira and her colleagues entered the courtroom. Asher and Alaric were already seated, with a lawyer organizing a hefty stack of documents beside them. Lemira and the manager took their seats, but their lawyer was still absent.
The judge asked Lemira, โWhen will your lawyer arrive?โ
Lemira replied, โAny minute now, theyโre on their way.โ
Asherโs tone was light. โDonโt tell me theyโre too scared to show, deliberately stalling? Lemira, you know you canโt win. Why not settle now? What do you want?โ
Leinira ignored Asher.
Just then, someone entered. โSorry for the delay.โ
Asher saw a middle-aged man with glasses and exclaimed, โMr. Alfred?โ
Mr. Alfred was known as a legal shark in the lawyer community. Currently, he was the chief legal counsel for the prestigious Everhart family. Why would he take on Maple Groupโs case, which was considered small fry?
