Asher’s face turned a shade of green. He had never thought he’d need to shoulder the blame.

Lemira’s voice, hoarse from talking, clutching a trophy in her hands, declared, “Come on, speak up, everyone. Isn’t this what you’ve always taught me? Why is it that when it’s your turn, you’re unwilling? You’re being too selfish!”

“Hey, worst-case scenario, we’re broke and begging on the streets, but that’s still better than being a selfish person. Evelina’s father has been good to the Langston family; you surely can’t let her face jail time!”

Asher was fuming, yet he found himself unable to refute her words. Because he had said the same to Lemira before.

Reluctantly, Asher said, “Lemira, you keep mentioning ‘family.’ Why don’t you drop the lawsuit then?”

“We might be bound by blood, but I’ve cut ties, so clearly, I’m no longer part of this family, am I? So, Mr. Asher, are you unwilling to bear the consequences for Evelina?”

“Lemira, is what you’re saying even reasonable?”

Lemira kicked over a trash can, her gaze icy. Her tone was laced with sarcasm, “So you know those words aren’t exactly easy to hear.”
