Evelina broke out in a cold sweat, her hands trembling so much that she couldn’t even hold her phone steadily. She scrambled away from Lemira’s desk in a panic. But Alaric blocked her way, his tone serious and demanding. “You haven’t answered my question, Evelina. What were you doing yas now?”

Evelina’s hands shook uncontrollably, and she couldn’t bring herself to meet Alaric’s gaze. Stammering, she managed to get out, “I was just trying to help Asher’s project win the bid. After all, Maple Group is currently our competitor, and I wanted to lend a hand.”

“You wanted to help, I get that. But do you realize that what you were doing is illegal? And not to mention, it could seriously hurt Leseg.” Alaric was flabbergasted that Evelina would stoop to such lows!

Suddenly, Lucian’s words came flooding back to him, “Could it be that the surveillance footage from the café was the…”

“Alaric, it’s not what you think…”

But Alaric wasn’t in the mood to listen to Evelina’s explanations, insisting sternly, “You need to go apologize to Lemira, now.”

Even though he had his differences with Lemira, even contemplating convincing her not to join the Reapers just moments ago, he would never stoop to such lows.

Evelina’s voice was laced with desperation, her panic evident. “Alaric, I was just doing this for Asher, please don’t tell anyone.”

If Lemira found out, it would be the end of her. Knowing Lemira’s character, she would never tolerate such betrayal!

Alaric was incredulous. “You’re saying Asher asked you to steal Lemira’s documents?”

“Yes, why else would I take such a risk? There’s nothing in it for me.”

In her frantic state, Evelina used Asher as a shield. Alaric paused, taken aback by the revelation that Asher had put Evelina up to this. Given Asher’s nature, it wasn’t out of character for him to resort to such tactics, especially since he harbored strong animosity towards Lemira recently.

Evelina saw an opportunity as Alaric wavered, quickly pressing her advantage. “Lucian has put half of his fortune into this project, just to get a foothold in Orvin. If the project fails, it would be a severe blow to him!”

“But this doesn’t justify using such underhanded tactics. Can’t you win on your own merits? Does Asher really need to go to such lengths against Lemira?”

Alaric still sensed something was off but couldn’t quite put his finger on it.

“Alaric, it’s not about going to extreme lengths. Asher just thinks Lemira isn’t cut out for the business limelight. Besides, she’s already crossed the Sinclairs, which will make her path forward difficult. If Lemira fails this time, she might finally stick to her studies and stay out of trouble.”

Alaric fell silent, absorbing her words.

Evelina continued, “Look at how famous Lemira is now; she doesn’t even consider the Langston family anymore. She even threatened to join your rivals, the Reapers, clearly showing she doesn’t care about your stance. Asher’s idea is to give Lemira a reality check, so she realizes how good she had it with the Langstons. Maybe then, she won’t join the Reapers and might stay with your team instead. After all, we’re family, aren’t we?”

Alaric pondered her last statement, wondering if Lemira would indeed remain with his team.

“What are you two whispering about over here?” Lemira suddenly approached, catching them off guard.

Evelina, startled, quickly covered, “Nothing much, just discussing team matters with Alaric. You’re now the captain of the Orvin University Team; do you still need to join the Reapers?”

“Well, it’s not a bad option, considering the Reapers’ strength, benefits, and promising future!”

Lemira returned to her seat, noticing something off with her computer, her lips curling into a cold smirk. She looked up. “You two, did you mess with my computer?”

“No, Alaric and I have been chatting here the whole time. Maybe someone else touched your computer. Right, Alaric?”

Evelina glanced at Alaric, her heart pounding in her throat. Don’t say it, please don’t!

Alaric gave a noncommittal nod, then turned to Lemira with a serious expression. “Asher is determined to win this bid at all costs. He’ll use whatever means necessary. You’re just an employee here; it might be best to walk away.”
