Chapter 83: Jeremiah and His Past
Raylee turned, shooting Shanice a chilling look. โLook at you,โ she said, โasking for my help while speaking to me rudely. Whatโs the point of me being the good guy here?โ
Shaniceโs demeanor softened. โYouโre right. We donโt have a deep-seated grudge, and you risked your life to save me. I shouldnโt be arguing.โ She added, โMy resentment began after Waverly returned to the Goodridge family. Her constant badmouthing intensified my hostility.โ
Raylee smiled, crouching beside Shanice. โQuite insightful.โ Since Shanice had offered an olive branch, Raylee would accept it. She wasnโt one to stubbornly hold a grudge. โI apologize,โ Raylee said. โI wasnโt aware of your situation with your ex. If I had known, I wouldnโt have brought it up.โ
Shanice shook her head. โIโm not blaming you, but could I ask a favor?โ
โWhat is it?โ
Overwhelmed, Shanice gripped Rayleeโs hand. โPlease, ask Mr. Lorimer to help me hunt that scoundrel down.โ
โIโll try, but the odds arenโt great. He might not listen.โ
โItโs fine if he doesnโt agree. Thank you,โ Shanice replied.
In that moment, the two women shook hands, making peace. A huge weight lifted from Rayleeโs chest.
Shanice was a straightforward woman, known for her fiery personality. Waverly cleverly befriended and manipulated her, using her as a pawn. Waverlyโs underhanded antics usually gave Raylee a headache, and adding the volatile Shanice often left Raylee feeling powerless. If Shanice and Waverly severed ties, Waverly would lose a key allyโwhich might not be a bad thing.
Later, Raylee fetched water for Shanice. While chatting, they waited for the rescue team. Raylee reflected on her past four years. If sheโd been alone when she fell, the people above might not have tried so hard to save her. But with Shanice, the Sutherland heiress, theyโd send an army. They had to know if she was alive or dead.
โKaylee,โ Shanice said, her expression serious, โyou must be wary of Jeremiah. Heโs done unsavory things abroad. I donโt mean to interfere, but caution is best.โ
โWhat are his deeds?โ Raylee asked earnestly.
โHe had several potential marriage partners, all of whom diedโpurportedly of accidents. How can someone be so unlucky?โ Shanice frowned. โAnd heโs obsessed with guns. In Jexburgh, few dare carry a gun like he does.โ
Raylee replied simply, โIโve heard this before.โ
โYou have? Arenโt you scared? Arenโt you afraid of meeting an untimely end like his fiancรฉes?โ Shanice exclaimed.
Raylee gave a bitter smile. โYears in prison couldnโt kill me. What else should I fear?โ
โYouโre not even scared? I respect that,โ Shanice said, changing the subject. โIf he suggests taking you abroad, refuse, especially East Aploth. Thatโs his turf!โ
Shanice explained, โI heard rumors of his illegal businesses there. He evenโฆ disposed of his fiancรฉes. I wonโt detail it, but reconsider any marriage plans.โ
Raylee nodded, though she didnโt take the rumors to heart. She did take the warning about East Aploth seriously; she had no intention of going there.
Suddenly, delighted exclamations interrupted them. Waverly had arrived with the rescue team. Raylee sighed in relief. โMs. Sutherland, your โbestieโ has arrived. Youโre saved.โ
โWho the hell is her bestie?โ Shanice spat. โSheโs been toying with my feelings!โ
Waverly ran over, but Shanice pushed her away. โStay away from me!โ Rejection was etched on Shaniceโs face.
โShanice, whatโs wrong? Donโt you recognize me?โ Waverly asked, confused.
โWho do you think you are? Do I even know you?โ Shaniceโs disdain was evident.
