Chapter 391 The Obvious Choice
โIsnโt it obvious? Are you suggesting youโd leave me and go back to his side?โ Jeremiah flatly rejected the idea. โNo, you belong to me. You canโt go back to any other man!โ
Raylee fell silent.
She had dropped so many hints and said so much, but up until that moment, Jeremiah was still unwilling to reveal the truth to her.
"Is he really going to wear that mask for the rest of his life? In the end, he simply doesnโt trust me. What else is there to be afraid of?"
Upon arriving at the hospital, they were greeted by Halston and two guards who were stationed there.
โAh!โ Upon seeing Raylee, Halston exclaimed in surprise. โRayโRay, you came too?โ
He glanced at Leonardo, his eyes darting around uneasily. โUm, I forgot to turn off the stove at home while making soup. I gotta go,โ he said, ready to make his exit. โIโll leave this in your hands, alright? Let me know if anything comes up!โ
After he finished speaking, he fled as if his life depended on it.
โWhatโs gotten into him?" Leonardo looked at Raylee, puzzled.
Raylee didnโt betray Halston. โI guess he must have really forgotten to turn off the stove. Heโs not related to Old Mr. Lorimer in any way. It was already kind of him to bring the latter here. Letโs quickly go check on Old Mr. Lorimer!โ
โWait for me here. Iโll go in,โ said Jeremiah before he entered the operating room.
Raylee knew that he was going to give a blood transfusion to Old Mr. Lorimer. If she followed him in, his identity would be exposed, something Jeremiah wasnโt prepared to do.
With that, she had no choice but to wait by the operating room door.
Time passed by gradually.
Two hours later, Old Mr. Lorimer was out of danger and transferred to a regular ward.
Looking at the unconscious Old Mr. Lorimer, Raylee felt a myriad of emotions overwhelming her.
โWhy the long face? Heโs not your grandfather. Whatโs there to be upset about?โ Leonardo said helplessly.
โI was just feeling a bit melancholic. Old Mr. Lorimer is the oldest member of the Lorimer family, yet just because he fell ill, he was placed in a nursing home by his own family, left to fend for himself. In the end, it was Old Mr. Mulligan who couldnโt bear to see his plight and took him in, providing him with a place on the military base to live out his days in peace. Despite being sick now, not a single person from the Lorimer family has come to visit. This man is nearly a hundred years old, and his children and grandchildren don't care about him. It breaks my heart to see this, as it reminds me of my own grandmother, who, on her deathbed, couldnโt even see her loved ones one last timeโฆโ
Toward the end, Raylee couldnโt help but start to choke up.
โEveryone has their own destiny. Itโs not our place to interfere. All we can do is ensure we do right by our own conscience," Jeremiah replied, gently rubbing her head.
โItโs getting late. You should head home first. Iโll stay by Old Mr. Lorimerโs side.โ
โLet me stay with him too. After all, Iโm his granddaughter-in-law, arenโt I?โ Raylee hinted in her words.
Jeremiah lightly huffed. โJust to clarify, you were once his granddaughter-in-law. You no longer have any ties with him or the Lorimer family because you are mine now.โ
Raylee shook her head.
โNo matter what, I only want to be Old Mr. Lorimerโs granddaughter-in-law,โ
โRaylee? Why are you so hung up on Jeremiah? If you become Old Mr. Lorimerโs granddaughter-in-law, what about me? Where do I stand in all this?โ
โYou will be my husband.โ
Suddenly, the air fell silent.
Jeremiah hesitated, struggling to find the words to continue his charade.
Raylee had reached the limits of her patience. She no longer wanted to play games with him.
โJeremiah, given the circumstances, Iโll make myself clear. Be it in the present, past, or future, you have always been my husband. What could you possibly be worried about?โ
โWhat am I worried about?โ Jeremiah was still trying to evade the issue.
โTell me! I already know everything. Letโs just lay our cards on the table!โ
โYou found outโฆโ Jeremiah wasnโt too surprised. โIt was Halston who told you, right? I knew it. He has a loose tongue. It was only a matter of time before he slipped up. I just didnโt expect that he would let the cat out of the bag so quickly, that bastard!โ
He started cursing out of anger.
โIt doesnโt matter who told me. Do you really intend to wear a mask for the rest of your life, even when facing me?โ Raylee let out a bitter laugh. "Oh, I know. I donโt have long to live now, probably less than half a year. It wouldnโt be hard for you to keep things from me for such a short period. But why go through all this? Jeremiah, isnโt it tiring for you to hide your true identity? Every lie told requires countless more to cover it up. Just the thought of it alone is exhausting.โ
