Chapter 39: Are You Not Afraid of Guns?

Samuel, who had been lying weakly on the bed, sat up in shock. Raylee stared at the gun in her hands, dazed and unable to react. โ€œRay-Ray, are you okay?โ€ Jeremiahโ€™s voice was anxious.

She glanced up at him, her eyes falling on the blood staining his shoulder. โ€œYouโ€™ve been shot!โ€

Jeremiahโ€™s lips curled into a faint smile. โ€œIโ€™m fine. You grabbed the gun in time, so it only grazed me. Itโ€™s just a surface wound.โ€

โ€œSo, youโ€™re the adopted daughter the Goodridge family raised for eighteen years? The one who stole my eldest daughterโ€™s necklace a few years ago?โ€ Victorโ€™s gaze was unreadable as he stared at Raylee. She met his eyes and nodded.

โ€œArenโ€™t you afraid of guns?โ€ he asked.

Raylee shook her head. During those four years of imprisonment, hadnโ€™t she seen all kinds of knives, guns, and torture devices? The horrifying instruments of punishment she had endured were a thousand times more terrifying than any gun. Victor didnโ€™t reprimand her for her curt response. Instead, a flicker of admiration surfaced in his eyes.

โ€œRay-Ray, this has nothing to do with you. Step aside; I need to get justice for my son!โ€ Alaric said, his tone strained.

Harriet came over and helped Raylee up, but Layla reached out, gripping Rayleeโ€™s arm firmly. Her expression was solemn. โ€œThis has everything to do with her! My brother resorted to violence because Samuel was bullying Raylee! She couldnโ€™t take it anymore, so she instigated my brother to pull the trigger!โ€

Kaylee stared at Layla in disbelief. Why would she say that? But within seconds, she understood. Layla was shifting the responsibility onto Raylee so the Goodridge family would have no grounds to hold the Lorimer family accountable.

Taking the blame? Itโ€™s not like itโ€™s my first time.

She nodded numbly. โ€œThatโ€™s right. I influenced Mr. Lorimer.โ€

โ€œRay-Ray, donโ€™t just say things like that!โ€ Harrietโ€™s frustration was evident. โ€œHow could you possibly instigate someone to shoot your own brother? Heโ€™s your brother, for heavenโ€™s sake!โ€

โ€œRaylee, stop lying!โ€ Waverly protested. โ€œI was there! You didnโ€™t manipulate Mr. Lorimer at all!โ€

โ€œCould you hear me from that far away?โ€ Rayleeโ€™s voice was emotionless as she turned away, falling silent.

Victor suddenly pointed at her, his voice thundering in anger. โ€œFine then, you little troublemaker!โ€ he snapped. โ€œFour years ago, you stole my eldest daughterโ€™s heirloom necklace, and now youโ€™re instigating my son to shoot someone? Youโ€™ve turned my family upside down. What exactly are you up to?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sorry,โ€ Raylee murmured, bowing her head.

Victorโ€™s expression was serious as he turned to Alaric. โ€œAlaric, you heard her yourself. Your daughter admitted she was the instigator. My son isnโ€™t to blame, and now heโ€™s even been shot. Do you still want to pursue this matter further?โ€

Alaricโ€™s expression darkened. It was like swallowing a bitter pill, knowing he had no way to refute the situation. He could onlyโ€ฆ

Just as Victor was about to lead his family away, Jeremiah suddenly shouted, โ€œThis has nothing to do with Ray-Ray! She didnโ€™t instigate me!โ€

โ€œJeremiah, just let it go,โ€ Layla whispered urgently. โ€œDonโ€™t make things worse.โ€

Victor shot him a warning look. โ€œShut your mouth, you little brat!โ€

โ€œHold on, Victor,โ€ Alaric said with a frown. โ€œLet your son finish. I heard him clearlyโ€”he said this matter has nothing to do with Raylee.โ€

Jeremiahโ€™s sharp gaze swept over Alaric and Harriet. โ€œHmph, so you only care about your sonโ€™s well-being? What about your daughter?โ€ His voice grew colder. โ€œIsnโ€™t an adopted daughter still a daughter? Raylee has been your daughter for eighteen years, yet in your eyes, sheโ€™s worth less than a dog?โ€

โ€œJeremiah, stop,โ€ Layla pleaded, her eyes red with worry. โ€œThis is their family matter.โ€ After struggling so hard to turn the situation around, she didnโ€™t want her brother to endure any more suffering.

Jeremiah shot her a glare. His voice, low and almost growling, said, โ€œYou know Samuel bullied Raylee, but do you even know how? He pushed her into the water. She nearly drowned. If I hadnโ€™t saved her in time, she would be dead by his hands!โ€

โ€œImpossible!โ€ Harriet immediately denied it. โ€œRaylee knows how to swim! How could she possibly drown?โ€

โ€œExactly,โ€ Alaric agreed. โ€œI remember clearlyโ€”she even won a medal on the swim team.โ€

Jeremiah pulled a folded medical report from his pocket and tossed it at Alaricโ€™s feet. His voice was laced with fury. โ€œOpen your eyes and read it carefully. The doctor diagnosed Raylee with a Level Four disability. Can she swim? She can barely walk properly, let alone live a normal life!โ€
