Chapter 348: Confessing to Her
Raylee had been coughing for quite some time. She almost coughed her guts out, even coughing up a bit of blood. Her already restless heart grew even more agitated.
The masked man had initially intended to keep things hidden, but he could only get away with hiding the truth so many times. Raylee was no fool, so she would have definitely noticed even if he hadnโt said anything. Rather than letting her overthink aimlessly, it was better to give her a clear understanding.
In the end, he confessed, โRayโRay, your medical condition is indeed not promising. The numerous human experiments you were subjected to in District Nine Prison have inflicted unforeseeable damage to your body. Although the treatments over the past few months seemed to have improved your health a bit, the complications youโre suffering from still persist. If they flare up, it could be life-threatening.โ
He truthfully shared a portion of the situation with her, but he didnโt divulge that she had less than five months left to live.
โIs it that serious?โ Raylee was taken aback, but she quickly regained her composure. Her mental fortitude was not as weak as the masked man had thought. People who have been through the devilโs prison have escaped from the clutches of death countless times. Her perspective on life and death had become quite indifferent.
โSo how should the complications left behind by such an experiment be treated?โ she asked calmly.
The masked man patiently replied, โItโs not necessarily hard, but itโs not exactly simple either. I need to obtain the experimental data on you from that time. Then, we can have the medical team develop a targeted drug. This way, your chances of recovery would be significantly high.โ
Raylee frowned, suggesting, โWhy not search in District Nine Prison? Surely, theyโll have the records there.โ
โIโve searched everywhere that needed to be searched. I even went as far as detaining the Epean professor who conducted those experiments on you back then.โ Speaking of this matter, the masked man was seething with anger.
โHeโs a madman. I had exhausted every method of interrogation, yet he did not utter a single word about the experimental data. There was nothing I could do to get through to him. Because of this lunatic, I made several trips to East Aploth and even tried to get the information out of him myself. But, I couldnโt get him to spill a word.โ
โThose few trips you made to East Aploth, were they all for this?โ Raylee was astounded.
The masked man gently caressed her cheek with his coarse yet slender fingers. โWhat else did you think? Did you really believe I was there for business? What business could possibly be more important than you? Companionship is the deepest declaration of love, and I wish I could spend every moment right by your side.โ
Tears welled up in Rayleeโs eyes, โI thought you wereโฆโ
The masked man found himself nonplussed. โHaving an affair with another woman? Silly girl, canโt you think better of me? Do I strike you as someone fickle?โ
โItโs not my fault for letting my imagination run wild; you didnโt explain things clearly.โ
The masked man shook his head helplessly.
โAngela is a doctor and also a good friend of mine. She has resided in East Aploth for many years, so I entrusted her with many of my affairs in that part of the world.โ
โReally?โ
โWhen have I ever lied to you? Besides, would I need to lie about such a trivial matter?โ The masked manโs tone grew more serious as he continued, โIโve just come to realize that youโre such a hopeless romantic. Youโre teetering on the brink of ill health, yet youโre still concerned about whether or not I have other women in my life.โ
Raylee shrugged nonchalantly. โDonโt worry about me; Iโm more composed than you might think. It canโt be helped. Every day in District Nine Prison, I lived as if I wouldnโt see the sunrise the next day. Ultimately, youโve done what you can, and thatโs all that matters. Whether I survive or not, itโs all in the hands of fate.โ
โDonโt try to comfort me. Iโll lose my mind if you donโt survive. Therefore, I must get the experimental data as soon as possible!โ the masked man asserted firmly.
โWhoโs comforting you?โ Raylee bit her lip, her voice choked with emotion as she continued, โHad it not been for you, I would have died six months ago on that rainy day. Every day Iโm alive now, is a day Iโve gained. Besides, we havenโt known each other for long, just a little over half a year. Just consider me as a passerby inโโ
The masked man coldly interrupted, saying, โWho told you that weโve only known each other for such a short time?โ
