Chapter 136: Two Sides of the Same Coin
โIโm not useless! Watch your damn mouth!โ he spat. โI can manage the Goodridge business myselfโI donโt need to cling to anyone!โ
Kaylee didnโt even bother responding. She simply looked at him with a hint of amusement in her eyes, as if watching a child throw a tantrum.
Just then, Harriet and Waverly rushed into the hospital room.
โRayโRay, are you all right?โ Harrietโs voice was frantic. โDr. Shapiro told me you were sold to the red-light districtโI was scared to death!โ
Samuel frowned. โMom? Wavy? How did you get here? I didnโt tell youโdid Caz?โ
โIt was me who informed Mrs. Goodridge,โ Percival answered coolly. โSomething this seriousโhow could she not know?โ
Samuel scowled. โWhat right do you have to meddle in our business?โ
Harriet ignored him, her face clouded with anger. โSamuel! Casimir! How could you keep something this big from me?โ
But she quickly turned back to Raylee, scanning her from head to toe. Seeing that Raylee still had some color in her face, she finally let out a breath of relief. โRayโRay, how are you feeling?โ she asked gently. โDr. Shapiro already told me everything. This was all because of that fool, your brother. Donโt worry, Iโll be giving him a piece of my mind once we get home!โ
โJust focus on recovering for now. Iโll bring you chicken soup every dayโitโll help you heal faster,โ she said.
Kaylee listened without reacting. Not even a flicker of emotion crossed her face.
Waverly, meanwhile, had noticed Samuelโs injury. Her eyes widened in concern. โSamuel, what happened to your forehead? Itโs bleedingโlooks like something hit you?โ
โIโm fine, just got bitten by a dog,โ Samuel muttered, sounding irritated.
โWhere did a dog even come from around here?โ Harriet asked, her face filled with concern. โWas it your own carelessness, or did someone else hurt you?โ
Her heart grew heavier as she walked over and gently pulled Samuelโs hand away. The moment she saw the deep wound on his forehead, her face tightened with distress.
โThis cut is too bigโit could leave a scar. You need to see a doctor immediately.โ
The level of concern in her voice was unmistakableโshe was far more anxious about Samuelโs injury than Rayleeโs ordeal. The contrast couldnโt have been clearer.
Raylee felt a dull ache in her chest, but she quickly dismissed it. She had long since gotten used to this kind of unequal treatment. Samuel gritted his teeth and refused outright. โNo need! Iโm a man. A few scars mean nothing to me. Iโm not worthless!โ
His tone was laced with resentment, clearly still holding a grudge over what Raylee had said earlier. In his entire life, no one had ever dared to call him useless.
Harrietโs gaze flickered to the shattered glass on the floor, and her expression darkened slightly. Turning to Kaylee, she hesitated before asking, โKayโRay, about your brotherโs injuryโฆโ
Raylee didnโt even try to conceal it. โYes, I did it.โ
โKay Kay, how could you be so reckless? Thatโs his headโitโs too dangerous!โ Harriet scolded. โYes, your brother made mistakes today. But he only wanted what was best for you. He didnโt mean for you to end up in the red-light district.โ
โThatโs right, Kaylee,โ Waverly chimed in, stepping forward to defend Samuel. โHe had good intentions. Canโt you stop blaming him?โ
Percival had initially thought Harriet would take Rayleeโs side. But seeing her blindly defend Samuel, he realized he had been wrong. Raylee had been right all alongโthere wasnโt a single good person in the Goodridge family.
โIs your son the only one who matters? Am I worth nothing?โ Rayleeโs voice was laced with cold fury. โIf this happens again, forget harming himโIโll personally send him straight to your familyโs ancestral graveyard.โ
Harriet quickly tried to pacify her. โRayโRay, calm down. Samuel was wrong this time, I wonโt deny that. Iโll inform your father immediately so he can discipline this rascal properly.โ
โMom, I didnโt do anything wrong!โ Samuel argued, his frustration evident. โEven if I had to do it all over again, Iโd still make the same choice. The only difference isโฆ Iโd make sure she stayed safe.โ
Percival had finally had enough. He scoffed. โMr. Goodridge, when you thought Raylee was dead, you were singing a completely different tune. You said if she came back to life, youโd never interfere in her affairs again. Youโre a real man, right? Youโre not about to go back on your word, are you?โ
Samuel shot him a venomous glare. โThis is a family matter. Itโs none of your business.โ
โSamuel, apologize to RayโRay right now,โ Harriet demanded. โOr Iโll report this to your father. You wonโt be able to handle the consequences.โ
Raylee watched her act all innocent and understanding. Her patience finally snapped. โGet lost. All of you. Donโt disgust me any further!โ
โRayโRay, Samuel knows he was wrong, heโs just too stubborn to admit itโโ
โReally?โ Raylee cut her off sharply. โIf heโs stubborn, then what does that make you? Just two sides of the same coin. One playing the good cop, the other the bad.โ
She scoffed. โDonโt think Iโm clueless. I know exactly why you suddenly pulled me out of prison.โ
Harrietโs face stiffened. She quickly tried to explain, โRayโRay, what are you saying? We only managed to get you out because tensions between the Goodridge and Lorimer families have eased. Ms. Tiffany also decided not to pursue the matter against you.โ
