Chapter 136: Two Sides of the Same Coin

โ€œIโ€™m not useless! Watch your damn mouth!โ€ he spat. โ€œI can manage the Goodridge business myselfโ€”I donโ€™t need to cling to anyone!โ€

Kaylee didnโ€™t even bother responding. She simply looked at him with a hint of amusement in her eyes, as if watching a child throw a tantrum.

Just then, Harriet and Waverly rushed into the hospital room.

โ€œRayโ€”Ray, are you all right?โ€ Harrietโ€™s voice was frantic. โ€œDr. Shapiro told me you were sold to the red-light districtโ€”I was scared to death!โ€

Samuel frowned. โ€œMom? Wavy? How did you get here? I didnโ€™t tell youโ€”did Caz?โ€

โ€œIt was me who informed Mrs. Goodridge,โ€ Percival answered coolly. โ€œSomething this seriousโ€”how could she not know?โ€

Samuel scowled. โ€œWhat right do you have to meddle in our business?โ€

Harriet ignored him, her face clouded with anger. โ€œSamuel! Casimir! How could you keep something this big from me?โ€

But she quickly turned back to Raylee, scanning her from head to toe. Seeing that Raylee still had some color in her face, she finally let out a breath of relief. โ€œRayโ€”Ray, how are you feeling?โ€ she asked gently. โ€œDr. Shapiro already told me everything. This was all because of that fool, your brother. Donโ€™t worry, Iโ€™ll be giving him a piece of my mind once we get home!โ€

โ€œJust focus on recovering for now. Iโ€™ll bring you chicken soup every dayโ€”itโ€™ll help you heal faster,โ€ she said.

Kaylee listened without reacting. Not even a flicker of emotion crossed her face.

Waverly, meanwhile, had noticed Samuelโ€™s injury. Her eyes widened in concern. โ€œSamuel, what happened to your forehead? Itโ€™s bleedingโ€”looks like something hit you?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m fine, just got bitten by a dog,โ€ Samuel muttered, sounding irritated.

โ€œWhere did a dog even come from around here?โ€ Harriet asked, her face filled with concern. โ€œWas it your own carelessness, or did someone else hurt you?โ€

Her heart grew heavier as she walked over and gently pulled Samuelโ€™s hand away. The moment she saw the deep wound on his forehead, her face tightened with distress.

โ€œThis cut is too bigโ€”it could leave a scar. You need to see a doctor immediately.โ€

The level of concern in her voice was unmistakableโ€”she was far more anxious about Samuelโ€™s injury than Rayleeโ€™s ordeal. The contrast couldnโ€™t have been clearer.

Raylee felt a dull ache in her chest, but she quickly dismissed it. She had long since gotten used to this kind of unequal treatment. Samuel gritted his teeth and refused outright. โ€œNo need! Iโ€™m a man. A few scars mean nothing to me. Iโ€™m not worthless!โ€

His tone was laced with resentment, clearly still holding a grudge over what Raylee had said earlier. In his entire life, no one had ever dared to call him useless.

Harrietโ€™s gaze flickered to the shattered glass on the floor, and her expression darkened slightly. Turning to Kaylee, she hesitated before asking, โ€œKayโ€”Ray, about your brotherโ€™s injuryโ€ฆโ€

Raylee didnโ€™t even try to conceal it. โ€œYes, I did it.โ€

โ€œKay Kay, how could you be so reckless? Thatโ€™s his headโ€”itโ€™s too dangerous!โ€ Harriet scolded. โ€œYes, your brother made mistakes today. But he only wanted what was best for you. He didnโ€™t mean for you to end up in the red-light district.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s right, Kaylee,โ€ Waverly chimed in, stepping forward to defend Samuel. โ€œHe had good intentions. Canโ€™t you stop blaming him?โ€

Percival had initially thought Harriet would take Rayleeโ€™s side. But seeing her blindly defend Samuel, he realized he had been wrong. Raylee had been right all alongโ€”there wasnโ€™t a single good person in the Goodridge family.

โ€œIs your son the only one who matters? Am I worth nothing?โ€ Rayleeโ€™s voice was laced with cold fury. โ€œIf this happens again, forget harming himโ€”Iโ€™ll personally send him straight to your familyโ€™s ancestral graveyard.โ€

Harriet quickly tried to pacify her. โ€œRayโ€”Ray, calm down. Samuel was wrong this time, I wonโ€™t deny that. Iโ€™ll inform your father immediately so he can discipline this rascal properly.โ€

โ€œMom, I didnโ€™t do anything wrong!โ€ Samuel argued, his frustration evident. โ€œEven if I had to do it all over again, Iโ€™d still make the same choice. The only difference isโ€ฆ Iโ€™d make sure she stayed safe.โ€

Percival had finally had enough. He scoffed. โ€œMr. Goodridge, when you thought Raylee was dead, you were singing a completely different tune. You said if she came back to life, youโ€™d never interfere in her affairs again. Youโ€™re a real man, right? Youโ€™re not about to go back on your word, are you?โ€

Samuel shot him a venomous glare. โ€œThis is a family matter. Itโ€™s none of your business.โ€

โ€œSamuel, apologize to Rayโ€”Ray right now,โ€ Harriet demanded. โ€œOr Iโ€™ll report this to your father. You wonโ€™t be able to handle the consequences.โ€

Raylee watched her act all innocent and understanding. Her patience finally snapped. โ€œGet lost. All of you. Donโ€™t disgust me any further!โ€

โ€œRayโ€”Ray, Samuel knows he was wrong, heโ€™s just too stubborn to admit itโ€”โ€

โ€œReally?โ€ Raylee cut her off sharply. โ€œIf heโ€™s stubborn, then what does that make you? Just two sides of the same coin. One playing the good cop, the other the bad.โ€

She scoffed. โ€œDonโ€™t think Iโ€™m clueless. I know exactly why you suddenly pulled me out of prison.โ€

Harrietโ€™s face stiffened. She quickly tried to explain, โ€œRayโ€”Ray, what are you saying? We only managed to get you out because tensions between the Goodridge and Lorimer families have eased. Ms. Tiffany also decided not to pursue the matter against you.โ€
