Chapter 185

Miranda suddenly realized Elder Street was near Winter's office. Her heart leaped into her throat, nearly choking her with anxiety. Meanwhile, the driver kept his word; what would normally be a half-hour trip took only fifteen minutes.

As soon as Miranda got out of the car and walked toward the hospital, she heard the wail of ambulance sirens.

โ€œHurry! These are the second wave of injured people from the Elder Street accidentโ€”get them to the emergency room immediately!โ€

Miranda watched as the unconscious, blood-covered patients were carried from the ambulance. A chill ran down her spine, and she quickened her pace into the hospital.

She gave Winter's name at the front desk.

โ€œAre you a relative?โ€ โ€œYes. I received a call about her.โ€ โ€œYouโ€ฆโ€ The nurse paused, looking somewhat sorry. โ€œYou should go inside and see her.โ€

Miranda's heart sank as she struggled to steady her trembling hand. She took a deep breath and turned the door handle. The next moment, she saw a body lying on the hospital bed, covered with a white sheet. Her knees went weak, and she almost collapsed.

Just then, a voice called from behind her. โ€œMimi, why are you here?โ€

Startled, Miranda spun around. There stood Winter, perfectly fine and lively.

โ€œYou scared me to death! Then whoโ€™sโ€ฆโ€

โ€œWhy are you over here, miss?โ€ The nurse who had directed her earlier walked by, frowning. โ€œYour friend is in the room next door.โ€

Miranda was speechless.

The nurse pointed at Winter. โ€œWhen you opened the door, she was already standing behind you. Yet you still got it wrong.โ€

Miranda remained silent. The two friends stood in the hallway.

โ€œAre you still mad?โ€ Winter hooked her finger around Mirandaโ€™s. โ€œIโ€™m sorry, okay? Donโ€™t be angry. Havenโ€™t you heard? Getting angry makes you age faster.โ€

โ€œMy dearest Mimi is so beautiful, it would be a shame to get wrinkles from being upset.โ€ Seeing Mirandaโ€™s gloomy expression, Winter quickly added, โ€œBut even if you get old, youโ€™ll still be the most beautiful and elegant old lady, soโ€ฆโ€

Knowing Winter was fine had eased most of Mirandaโ€™s anger, and Winterโ€™s playful antics brought a smile to her face.

โ€œAlright, alright. The storm has passed! Donโ€™t be mad anymore, okay?โ€

โ€œThe hospital called saying you were in a car accident. I was scared out of my wits. So what exactly happened? How did you hurt your face?โ€

Miranda was relieved it was a false alarm, but she frowned at Winter's facial injury.

โ€œI was leaving work and planned to try that new barbecue place. But when I passed Elder Street, there was a chain collision, and some shattered glass nicked my face. Then I fell.โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t want to come to the hospital, but the paramedics were worried the injury might have affected my brain. So, to be safe, they brought me in the ambulance.โ€

It was her first time in an ambulance. Surrounded by other injured people and hearing their groans of pain, Winter had been shaken. Had she been a little closer to the impact, she could have been the one in the emergency room.

Miranda seemed to realize this and squeezed her hand. โ€œItโ€™s okay. Youโ€™re alright now.โ€

The fear in Winterโ€™s eyes melted away, and she smiled. โ€œDonโ€™t you know me by now? Iโ€™ve always been ridiculously lucky, escaping danger. But did you really think I was dead?โ€

Winter was sure that if she had called out to Miranda even a second later, this silly goose would have burst into tears.
