Chapter 80
Yvonne texted again: [I checked. The color is the same as Shermaineโs lipstick.]
Wendelyn finally relaxed. Now that Shermaine had drunk that glass of wine, the deadly parasite would surely enter her system. There was no way she'd survive the night.
After all, what Kingston gave her was a silent killer. It was impossible to detect, no matter how advanced the equipment. That was the only reason Wendelyn dared to take this gamble.
Maybe that so-called genius Dr. Shue could find a solution, but what were the odds sheโd show up here? Absolutely zero.
Wendelyn texted: [Yvonne, someone will pick you up outside the hotel. Go now. As for your father, Iโll handle everything.] If Yvonne left this city, sheโd better never come back.
After reading this, Yvonne heaved a sigh of relief. Seeing no one around, she hurried away.
Meanwhile, on the other sideโฆ
Everyone looked on with curiosity at Owen, who sat in his wheelchair with a woolen blanket over his legs. Despite his condition, his complexion was surprisingly rosy, and he beamed at them with evident delight.
But how could this be?
Didnโt they say Owen only had a year or so left? But now, he was full of life, nothing like someone who was about to kick the bucket.
A gentleman stepped forward and asked respectfully, โMr. York, I heard you hadnโt been well and have been quite concerned. But seeing you now, you look perfectly healthy. May I ask which remarkable doctor helped you make such an amazing recovery?โ
He then explained, โMy father has been gravely ill recently. Weโve consulted many renowned physicians, but nothing has worked. Iโm truly worried sick.โ
Before Owen could respond, someone in the crowd chimed in, โWasnโt Mr. Yorkโs physician always Dr. Newman? The most renowned doctor in Basterel? People say his skills are legendary!โ
โYeah,โ someone agreed, โyou really canโt go wrong with Dr. Newman.โ
Owen shook his head and said, โIt wasnโt Dr. Newman. His prescriptions never worked for me, so I stopped taking his herbal formulas a while ago.โ
The crowd gasped in unison.
Wait, not Dr. Newman?
The one who had just brought up Dr. Newman flushed with embarrassment.
The gentleman pressed on, โIf it wasnโt Dr. Newman, then who was this expert?โ
Owen beamed with pride. โMy health has really improved. I can walk without getting winded now, and itโs all thanks to my granddaughter-in-law!โ
What?
The York family had three grandsonsโonly Joshua remained unmarried, while the other two were already wed. So which granddaughter-in-law was being talked about? None of them were known to have any medical skills. Maybe she had simply brought in a renowned doctor?
Owen continued, โYouโre a filial man. When my granddaughter-in-law arrives later, Iโll introduce you so you can ask her yourself.โ
The gentlemanโs face lit up with delight. โIโd be most grateful for your help, sir,โ he said.
Just then, Janice strolled over from the other side, dressed in a simple yet elegant evening dress and decked out in jewelry. With a beaming smile, she called out, โWell, Owen, youโre looking quite spry today!โ
Owen arched his bushy white brows and grinned, โYou bet! With Sheary around, how could I not be in good health?โ He added proudly, โThank goodness Ross brought Sheary back to your family. Otherwise, you guys would have missed out on a real treasure.โ
โYeah, I couldnโt be happier whenever I saw Sheary. Sheโs so well-behaved, filial, and just amazing. You have no ideaโever since she gave me acupuncture, the chronic migraines that plagued me for years have almost disappeared.
โNow I sleep like a baby, and honestly, nothing beats a good nightโs sleep,โ Janice said joyfully.
โAbsolutely! Since I started taking the medicine, Iโve been sleeping much better,โ Owen said. โSheary even told me I could live to be a hundred. I didnโt believe it at first, but now I do.โ
Not only was his illness cured, but he had also gained such an outstanding granddaughter-in-law. Owen was over the moon, as if heโd struck gold.
โIf only that rascal would give me less trouble. Doesnโt he realize how sought-after Shermaine is? If he ever lets her slip away, Iโll teach him a lesson!
The two old-timers got so carried away chatting that they lost track of everything else.
The onlookers were utterly baffled, exchanging hesitant glances. They had so many questions but couldnโt find an opening to interrupt.
What was going on here?
Everyone said Shermaine was just a pretty face with no substance, notorious for her vicious temper. She had even gotten scions from several prominent families sent to prison. Her reputation was far from stellar.
So why did these two elders treat her like a treasure? And from the way they talked, she actually seemed to know something about medicine, too.
They were utterly perplexed.
Just then, Shermaine appeared before the crowd, gracefully holding onto Joshuaโs arm, her slender figure instantly drawing all eyes.
In fact, many people at the party had never seen Shermaine before.
Although the Jean family had thrown an acknowledgment party for Shermaine, most elite families hadnโt received invitations. Instead, the attendees were primarily lesser-known minor families.
So, the moment Shermaine appeared at the engagement party, all eyes were instantly drawn to her mesmerizing presence.
She truly took everyoneโs breath away.
Thus, to say she was breathtakingly beautiful would be no exaggeration.
True beauty always came from within.
Her beauty went far beyond superficial. It was an inborn elegance and poise that left others awestruck. Could a mere pretty face ever possess such qualities?
