Chapter 56
Without drinking any milk that night, Shermaine didnโt sleep very well. She really wanted to sleep, but her mind would wander off in all directions sometimes. When she finally managed to fall asleep, she dreamed.
The next morning, Shermaine woke up a little after six, still feeling groggy. Once again, she had dreamt of a much younger Ruth, who was telling her bedtime stories with a gentle smile and loving eyes.
After a workout and breakfast, Shermaine finally shook off her drowsiness. She grabbed her phone and called Joshua.
Soon, Joshuaโs pleasant voice came through. โGood morning, Shermaine.โ
โMorning,โ Shermaine replied.
โJust woke up?โ
โYeah. Without your milk, I didnโt sleep well last night.โ
โIf you like it, Iโll have some sent over today.โ Joshua was ready to fulfill all of his fiancรฉeโs requests.
โThatโd be great.โ Shermaineโs tone was tinged with happiness.
Joshua chuckled softly. โSo, need something from me?โ He knew Shermaine rarely called just to chat.
Shermaine responded, โI need to borrow a lawyer from your legal team.โ
Shermaine arrived at school right on time at 7:20 AM. There werenโt many people at school yet, but she could feel the curious, gossipy stares following her, as if they were trying to uncover some juicy secret.
But Shermaine didnโt care in the slightest. Once she made it to the classroom, she pulled out a book and began reading.
Summer dashed in right before the bell and flopped into her seat with a loud thud. Next to her, Shermaine was engrossed in her book, flipping through the pages at an impressive speed.
Summer glanced at the title of the book: A Global History. She had heard of it before, but as a high schooler, she would never read something like this.
She was more into cheesy romance novels.
โSo this is the gap between a top student and a slacker like me, huh?โ Summer thought. โShearyโs on a whole different levelโeven the book she reads is intellectually stimulating.โ
Shermaine reads every morning. She has a remarkable memory and never forgets what she has read.
Sheโd browsed many books in the school library before finally settling on this one. It wasnโt particularly deep, but it was full of useful knowledge.
The first class of the day was Wallingtonian. As soon as the teacher arrived, she handed out the test papers.
Shermaineโs classmates werenโt exactly top-tier in humanities, but they werenโt hopeless either. Usually, students in the science track werenโt good at Wallingtonian, but they could at least manage to keep a C grade.
Shermaine, however, was an exception. Since she joined the class, her Wallingtonian grades had been outstanding, and her essays were particularly excellent.
In the midterm, she lost a few points because sheโd missed a minor question. Otherwise, she would have scored an A+.
Rumors spread that she had cheated, but with the level of her work, it was hard to believe that was the case. So, the teachers were all convinced that her score was the result of her skill.
Right now, Mason was fuming. A ridiculous rumor that Shermaine had cheated on the midterms was spreading like wildfire. He didnโt need to think twice to figure out who was behind itโIt had to be Alice, the model student he had defended just days ago.
He was determined to teach Alice a lesson in the parent-teacher meeting scheduled next Monday. She deserved punishment for spreading false rumors and tarnishing Shermaineโs reputation.
But then, unexpectedly, the principal called him and said in an unusually stern voice, โCome to my office.โ
Mason immediately sensed something was wrong, but didnโt rush to ask. โIโll be right there.โ
Half an hour later, Isabel walked into Shermaineโs classroom. โShermaine, step outside for a moment,โ she said.
Shermaine seemed to have anticipated this. She stood up and followed her out.
In the hallway, Isabelโs face was tight with anger. โSomeone reported you to the school district office, and now the officials are waiting in the principalโs office for you.โ
Shermaine nodded slightly.
โThese seniors have gone too far. We work so hard to teach them, yet instead of being considerate of our situations, they did something like this without knowing the true story,โ Isabel thought.
โAnd thatโs not all,โ she continued. โThe person who reported you also accused Mr. Moe of accepting bribes to cover up your cheating. If you donโt prove your innocence, he could be suspended and investigated.โ
โGot it. No need to worry, Ms. Vaughn,โ Shermaine said calmly. โProving I didnโt cheat is easy. Iโll take a more difficult test in front of the district office staff. Once the results are out, everything will be clear.โ
Isabel knew Shermaine was right, but she couldnโt help feeling frustrated with the students who doubted Shermaineโs abilities. Rumors were always a messy mix of truth and lies, such as those celebrity dating scandals that always turn out to be fake.
The students should focus on their studies instead of wasting time on such pointless gossip.
Soon, Shermaine and Isabel reached the principalโs office.
โThis is Shermaine Shue. She got straight Aโs in the midterms,โ Mason said. Then he turned to Shermaine and continued, โThis is Mr. Collins from the school district office.โ
โItโs a pleasure to meet you,โ Shermaine said coolly.
She looked so composed and confident that Christopher Collins, the staff member from the school district office, found it hard to believe she had cheated.
But appearances could be deceiving, so the investigation was inevitable.
Shermaine got straight to the point. โMr. Collins, I understand it was hard for some to accept that I got straight Aโs. But honestly, it was no challenge for me. If you donโt believe me, feel free to give me a tougher test.โ
โA tougher test? Sheโs much too confident,โ Christopher thought.
Determined to handle this fairly, he decided the best way to deal with it was to see for himself how well Shermaine could perform. โAlright, I do have some difficult senior-year tests. You can take it right here in the principalโs office. Iโll supervise you myself.โ
Shermaine nodded slightly.
Soon, someone brought in a desk and chair. Shermaine sat down and said, โCould you hand me the test papers and a pen?โ
Mason handed her the papers with an encouraging nod.
Shermaine thought, โRelax. Your teaching career wonโt end here!โ
Christopher sat nearby, watching closely.
The first test was math. Shermaine picked up the pen and, without a momentโs hesitation, began working on the multiple-choice questions.
Christopher couldnโt help but notice how fast she was filling in the answers, without pausing to think or looking back. He raised an eyebrow, thinking, โIs she even taking the time to read the questions? This test is pretty challenging.โ
About twenty minutes later, Shermaine finished the math test, then picked up the physics paper and got to work on that. Afterward, she breezed through the chemistry test, the economics test, and the rest of the papers.
During the break, Hannah went to see Alice. The two found a secluded spot to talk.
โAlice, someone from the school district office showed up. Shermaineโs definitely getting expelled today,โ Hannah said.
Alice smirked smugly. โOf course. A cheater doesnโt deserve to stay at this school, and she definitely doesnโt deserve Leslieโs attention.โ
Time flew by, and two hours passed in the blink of an eye.
Christopher started grading Shermaineโs papers. By the time he finished reviewing all of them, he let out a deep breath. She had scored full marks in every subject.
Christopher appreciated students with excellent grades. Shermaine had impressed him and earned his respect.
He then turned to the principal and Mason. โShermaineโs performance on the tests is more than enough to prove she didnโt cheat on the midterms. We will take action to ensure the students who spread these false rumors are severely punished.โ
Shermaine gave a slight smile. โThank you, Mr. Collins. Iโd appreciate it if you could clear my name in front of all the senior students and their parents next Monday.โ
Before the last class of the morning started, Shermaine returned to the classroom.
Her classmates, looking worried, asked, โSheary, are you okay?โ
Shermaine nodded and said, โDonโt spread the word yet. The school district office will set things straight for me next Monday.โ
Meanwhile, at Basterel University, Erin had just finished class when someone rushed in, asking, โWhat the hell, Erin? What did you do?โ
Confused, Erin saw a lawyer and uniformed police officers walking in. His face instantly turned pale.
