Chapter 47

Wendelyn had been to Joshuaโ€™s house with Shermaine before. When she came back, Ruth had asked her how it went and if sheโ€™d managed to impress Owen. But someone as proud as Wendelyn would never admit that not only did she fail to earn Owenโ€™s favor, but that Shermaine had subtly humiliated her as well. So, she didnโ€™t go into detail about what happened that day, instead brushing it off with a vague answer.

At that moment, Wendelyn thought, โ€˜Shermaineโ€™s trying to humiliate me by suggesting a game of chess. Sheโ€™s so confident that she can beat me? But she held her own in a fierce match against Mr. Owen York. Can I even stand a chance against her?โ€™

As she hesitated in silence, Ruth responded for her, โ€œAlright, your sisterโ€™s been awarded in chess before. Itโ€™s not a bad idea for you two to have a match after dinner.โ€

โ€œGirls shouldnโ€™t just bury their heads in books all the time. Itโ€™s good to expose yourself more to refined, literary thingsโ€“it cultivates your taste, elevates your character, and helps you enrich your inner self.โ€

Shermaineโ€™s smile grew even brighter. โ€œThen itโ€™s settled.โ€ Seeing Wendelyn frozen in place, she teased, โ€œWhatโ€™s the matter, Wendy? You donโ€™t want to play?โ€

Wendelyn replied through clenched teeth, โ€œOf course not. Letโ€™s do it.โ€ She didnโ€™t believe Shermaine was really that good and could actually win.

Janice watched the scene unfold with a smile, thinking, โ€˜Ruthโ€™s getting too full of herself. She didnโ€™t even realize that Shermaine was laying a trap for Wendelyn. Well, good. Let her see how her supposedly outstanding daughter would be outmatched by Shermaine.โ€™

The night deepened, and the autumn wind blew gently.

Dinner was over, and Ruth went upstairs herself to bring down the chess set and get things ready.

But Wendelynโ€™s expression grew darker with anxiety.

Meanwhile, Shermaine went out for a walk with Janice. Not long after they left, Clyde showed up.

He looked around and asked, โ€œAunt Ruth, didnโ€™t you say Shermaine would be back today? Where is she?โ€

โ€œShe went out for a walk,โ€ Ruth replied.

โ€˜Sheโ€™s in the mood to go for a walk at a time like this?โ€™ thought Clyde.

Ruth gave him a look. โ€œWhat do you want with her?โ€

โ€˜To laugh at her, of course,โ€™ Clyde thought. โ€˜She cheated on the midtermsโ€“what a disgrace to our family.'

Then he said, โ€œAunt Ruth, Shermaine had her midterms this week, and the results came out today. Word is, she got straight Aโ€™s by cheating. I thought Iโ€™d come over and ask if itโ€™s true.โ€

Ruthโ€™s eyes lit up. โ€œShe cheated on the midterms?โ€

Clyde sneered, โ€œYeah, thatโ€™s what I heard from people at her school. I mean, come on, how could she possibly beat Leslie? I asked Leslie about it, but he wouldnโ€™t tell me anything. Luckily, I got the scoop from some other students.

โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong with that school? How could they just let her keep the grades without taking any action? But I guess itโ€™s tricky for them to act. First, they donโ€™t have any evidence. Plus, itโ€™s the top school in the cityโ€“if word gets out, the schoolโ€™s reputation will be tarnished.โ€

โ€˜Shermaine, how dare you show off at dinner? You got straight Aโ€™s by cheating!โ€™ Ruth thought, still fuming from being scolded by Janice during dinner, โ€˜I knew it! Thereโ€™s no way she can get such good grades or be better than Wendy.โ€™

Clyde couldnโ€™t help but gloat. โ€œBut I heard that someone at the school had already reported her to the school district office. Theyโ€™ll probably send someone over tomorrow to handle it.โ€

Ruth smirked. โ€œEven if sheโ€™s my daughter, cheating like that canโ€™t be tolerated. Since she dared to do it, sheโ€™d better be ready..."

She thought for a moment and then told Clyde, โ€œWhen she comes back, donโ€™t tell her you already..."

โ€œWhy not?โ€ asked Clyde.

โ€œYour grandmother dotes on Shermaine and might scold you for speaking ill of her.โ€

โ€œGrandmaโ€™s totally biased,โ€ Clyde pouted.

He thought, โ€˜Once the person from the school district office verifies the truth tomorrow, Shermaine will likely be expelled. But if Aunt finds out, she'd probably send someone to handle it. So what? The stain will stick with her for lifeโ€“it canโ€™t just be wiped away!โ€™

Clyde saw the chessboard on the table. โ€œIs Wendy going to play against someone?โ€

โ€œYeah. Against Shermaine,โ€ replied Ruth.

โ€œWhat?โ€ Clyde scoffed, laughing mockingly as he thought, โ€˜Sure enough, Shermaine doesnโ€™t know her limits.โ€™

He was about to say more when Shermaine and Janice walked in. The moment he saw Shermaine, he remembered the bet theyโ€™d made. Heโ€™d eaten so much leftover food that night, and when he got home, his stomach had been in knots.

He hadnโ€™t slept a wink and had even ended up in the hospital for an IV drip in the middle of the night. Now, just seeing her made his blood boil, and he wasnโ€™t about to play nice.

Shermaine completely ignored him. She helped Janice to the couch and handed her some water.

โ€œShermaine, chess isnโ€™t as easy as playing video games. Wendy is really good at it. Are you sure you can handle it?โ€ Clyde just couldnโ€™t keep his mouth shut.

Shermaine replied casually, โ€œWhether I can handle it or not is none of your business.โ€

โ€œYouโ€ฆโ€ Clyde stopped abruptly. He turned to Janice and complained, โ€œGrandma, did you hear how she just spoke to me?โ€

Janice, who knew Clyde didnโ€™t like Shermaine and was on Wendelynโ€™s side, said, โ€œThatโ€™s just how she is. If you canโ€™t stand it, donโ€™t talk to her.โ€

Clyde was fuming.

Janice, being older and still recovering from an illness, wasnโ€™t in the best health. Shermaine made a mental note to give her a checkโ€“up later and write a prescription to help her recover.

Then her mind wandered to Owen, whoโ€™d been on his medicine for a week now. She wondered how he was doing.

As Janice and Shermaine were back, Ruth said eagerly, โ€œIโ€™ll go upstairs and call Wendy down.โ€

At that moment, Wendelyn was wiping her blackโ€“framed glasses. After putting them on, she sat in front of the vanity and looked at herself in the mirror.

โ€œWendy, make sure you give it your all later. Show that old woman what youโ€™re made of and help me regain some dignity,โ€ Ruth said.

She thought to herself, โ€˜I know Janice doesnโ€™t think much of Wendelyn, always considering her just average. Nowโ€™s my chance to prove her wrongโ€“to show that the daughter Iโ€™ve raised is the most talented and refined young lady in Basterel.โ€™

Wendelynโ€™s eyes flickered before she nodded with a determined expression. โ€œGot it, Mom. Donโ€™t worry.โ€

โ€œOh, and one more thingโ€“just now, Clyde told me downstairs that Shermaine got straight Aโ€™s by cheating. It has spread throughout the school. Honestly, that girl will stop at nothing just to show off and change her reputation,โ€ Ruth added. She was sure that Shermaine had a hidden agenda by doing all thisโ€ฆ

โ€œIs that true?โ€

โ€œAccording to Clyde, some students have reported her to the school district office.โ€

Wendelynโ€™s gaze darkened, her thoughts unreadable.

A few minutes later, Wendelyn came downstairs. She had changed into casual clothes and was now wearing the blackโ€“framed glasses, which gave her a refined, scholarly lookโ€“almost convincing enough to pass as a true intellectual.

Earlier, she looked hesitant about the chess match, but now she seems much more confident.

Noticing that, Shermaine couldnโ€™t help but think, โ€˜Her demeanor has shifted since she went upstairs. What has she done? Oh, right. Those glasses. Sheโ€™s wearing a cheating device. No wonder she looks so confident. Fine by me. With her skills? Sheโ€™s not even worth my time.โ€™

Wendelyn sat down across from Shermaine. โ€œShermaine, letโ€™s start.โ€

Shermaine propped her chin in her hand, giving Wendelyn a sideways glance before smiling slightly. โ€œAlright.โ€

Wendelyn started fiddling with her phone. โ€œMind if I stream this? Iโ€™ve been streaming on YouTube lately and didn't have anything planned for today. This chess game is perfect.โ€

โ€œGo ahead,โ€ Shermaine replied, thinking, โ€˜Anyway, itโ€™s not me whoโ€™ll end up embarrassed.โ€™

Wendelyn had a decent following on YouTube. Although sheโ€™d only recently started streaming, with her reputation as a talented woman and her already considerable popularity, she has managed to accumulate three million followers in a short time.

As soon as the live stream began, fans flooded into the chat. The screen was filled with comments praising her.

Wendelyn greeted them with a smile. After adjusting the camera, she turned to Shermaine and said in a soft, polite tone, โ€œLetโ€™s begin, Shermaine. You go first.โ€
