Chapter 32
In fact, these people had committed more than just such crimesโsome had even been involved in rape, and there were cases where someone had ended up dead.
As soon as some of the wealthy ladies saw the police, their faces went pale. The others started feeling increasingly uneasy.
Shermaine replied, โYeah, I did.โ
Amira had come here tonight fully prepared, aiming to get revenge for Ronnie, whoโd been humiliated by Joshua. She even gathered these women together to destroy any evidence that could hurt Ronnieโs side.
To make sure the deleted evidence couldnโt be recovered, she even hired a hacker to wipe it clean permanently, thinking that would cover their tracks.
But she didnโt expect Shermaine to turn the tables on them and call the police.
Jameson showed a strange expression. He remembered Shermaine telling him not to come, and now he finally realized that she didnโt really need him to play the father role here.
Amira, starting to panic, tried to steady herself. Thinking the deleted videos would be gone for good, she took a breath and said, โAs for intentional injury, Shermaine, donโt tell me youโre clean.
โAnd as for drug trafficking and kidnapping stuff, youโre just framing our children. Got any evidence for that?โ
โActually, officer,โ Amira added, โIโve got a video of her attacking our children. You came at the right time. Please take her away now.โ
Shermaine blinked her eyes, looking innocent. โI always abide by the law, but sometimes, a bit of violence is the only way to get things done.โ
She paused for a second before continuing, โAs for evidence, whether itโs drug trafficking, illegal kidnapping, intentional injury, or anything else, Iโve got it all.โ She pulled out her phone and handed it to the officer.
Shermaine shot the videos when she patched up her wound in Danielleโs office. Amira had ordered the hacker to permanently erase the data on her phone, yet she never anticipated that the evidence had automatically been uploaded to cloud storage.
It was too easy for Shermaine to copy it. It proved that no evil deed would go unpunished.
After watching the video, the officerโs face grew serious. โPlease, follow me to the station.โ
These rich kids had been living like they were untouchable, abusing their wealth and status. The evidence was enough to get them locked up for years.
They were arrested, and it felt like a bad dream. Only when the police carsโ lights flashed in front of the hospital, and people started watching them being taken away, did they realize how deeply they were screwed.
It was humiliating, and now they were terrified. They knew the consequences could be years behind bars.
Amira only started to regret things when she saw Ronnie being taken away by the police again. She couldnโt believe how things ended up like this. She thought she had everything covered, but somehow, Shermaine found the evidence theyโd been so careful to hide.
As those rich ladies were worried about their sonsโ futures and tried to find a way out, somehow the news spread out like wildfire through Basterel.
Once the news was out, there was no way they could try to pull some strings to get their sons out. Even their families were going to be dragged into this mess.
After all, this was a family scandal, involving drug trafficking, kidnapping, and assaultโnothing they could brush under the rug.
Lily, the victim in all this, didnโt expect Shermaine to bring her justice so easily.
Before Shermaine left for the police station, she asked Lily, โHow do you know Wendelyn?โ
Lily didnโt hide anything and told Shermaine the whole story.
Shermaine thought, โWhat a surprise. Theyโre actually sisters.
Wendelyn, now a Jean, would never acknowledge Lily as her sister.
Shermaine asked, โSo, you and Wendelyn had an argument at Grandview Mall that day?โ
Lily responded, โWell, it wasnโt really an argument. After I got fired from the store, I asked Wendy out, I asked her if she was the one who got me fired, and she admitted it.
โI asked her why. She said she didnโt want to see me in Basterel anymore. Then she gave me a check for 30 thousand dollars.โ
Just thinking about that check made Lily angry. She was poor, but she had her pride. She wasnโt after Wendelyn for her money or statusโshe just wanted to make up for the sister sheโd lost when her family sent her away at the age of five.
Lily said, โI didnโt take the check, and I told her I wouldnโt bother her again. But not long after that, I was forcibly taken away by those jerks.โ
Shermaine said flatly, โIt could be Wendelyn inciting them to do dirty work for her.โ
Shermaineโs gut told her that if Wendelyn hadnโt encouraged or pushed Ronnie, he never wouldโve lost his mind and gone after a stranger like that.
Lily lowered her eyes and said, โI felt the same thing, butโฆ Never mind. Letโs just say weโve settled our debt with her.โ
โIf youโre not planning to hold her accountable, fine. I wonโt dig any deeper,โ Shermaine replied. โBut I need to tell you, she and I are technically sisters now, though we are not close.
โI hope you wonโt come and beg me to spare her when something bad happens to her.โ
Lily didnโt hesitate but replied, โSure, Sheary. From the moment she asked me to leave Basterel, I stopped seeing her as my sister. Her life and death have nothing to do with me anymore.โ
Wendelyn was also summoned to the police station to give a statement about Lilyโs case. But she wasnโt worried about being dragged into the mess. After all, Ronnie was an idiot, and he valued her like gold.
In the interrogation room, the officers only asked her a few questions that didnโt really matter. When they told her she could leave, Wendelyn asked, โOfficer, will my sister be detained?โ
โNo,โ the officer replied.
โWhy not?โ Wendelyn pressed.
The officer shot a glance at her but said nothing.
Wendelyn let out a chuckle. โI mean, sure, Ronnie and the others hurt Lily, but wasnโt it Sheary who threw the first punch? And she hurt them pretty terribly?โ
โYour family agreed to cover the medical bills, didnโt you?โ the officer replied. โOur chief said we should wrap this up quickly and not delay her school tomorrow.โ
Wendelyn replied, โWell, thatโsโฆ a relief.โ
The officer silently rolled his eyes and retorted inwardly, โReally? How come it looks like youโre not happy about the result?โ
When Amira learned Shermaine could go home, she immediately made a scene. โWhy isnโt she being held accountable? She put my children in the hospital, and now sheโs just walking free? Give me an explanation.โ
The officer explained, โFirst, theyโre willing to compensate you for your losses. Second, thereโs an important lead in the evidence Shermaine provided - about a drug trafficking ring.
โWe appreciate her cooperation. Besides, she got her punishment. Sheโs writing an apology letter. She canโt leave before she finishes it.โ
Amira thought to herself, โAn apology letter? You call that punishment?โ
The officer remained stone-faced, โIf youโre unsatisfied, you can take it to court. But in the meantime, I suggest you get a better lawyer for your son.โ
Amira looked like sheโd just bitten into something sour.
Shermaine sat in a chair with her legs casually crossed. Her right hand was injured, so writing would hurt, but she used her left hand instead.
When Wendelyn walked out of the interrogation room, her eyes immediately landed on Shermaine. Wendelyn couldnโt help but think how stunning Shermaine wasโher face, the sharp angles, and her features were just perfect.
Wendelyn had always thought she was pretty, but next to Shermaine, she felt ordinary. She thought to herself, โIf only my face looked like hers. Shermaine doesnโt even deserve that kind of beauty.โ
Wendelyn walked over and spoke up, โSheary, Iโm just curious about how you got all that evidence?โ
She didnโt think Shermaine checked their phones, and Amira had clearly wiped everything clean.
Shermaine smirked. โIโve got a friend whoโs really good with computers.โ That โfriendโ was, of course, Shermaine herself.
โOh, I see. Hacking into someoneโs phone, thatโs an invasion of privacy, isnโt it?โ Wendelynโs voice rose slightly.
Shermaine replied with a smile, โInciting others to commit crimes is also illegal, you know?โ
Wendelyn clenched her fists. โSheary, you really know a lot.โ She bit her lip and then asked, โBy the way, does Joshua know what kind of trouble you got into tonight?โ
Shermaine rolled her eyes, thinking, โGeez, this is so annoying. Can she stop talking?โ
Shermaine stopped writing, looked at Wendelyn, and said, โIโm doing the world a favor, donโt you think? If Josh knew, heโd have someone come pick me up.
โBut this is just a small thing. Iโm not going to bother him. Heโs busy enough already. I wouldnโt want to interrupt.โ
The way Shermaine casually referred to Joshua as โJoshโ made Wendelynโs face turn as cold as stone, and her nails dug into her palms.
Shermaine grinned, leaning in a little and pretending to sound sweet. โItโs late, but Iโm kinda missing him right now.โ
Shermaine couldnโt help but call herself a drama queen.
But to her surprise, things only got worse.
-Joshuaโs deep voice suddenly came from behind her. โIf you miss me, why donโt you just call me, hmm?โ
