Chapter 294

Shermaineโ€™s heart softened at his concern. โ€œFine, have it your way. But even without protection, I promise no one will ever hurt me.โ€ Her confidence was absolute.

Joshua gripped her hand. โ€œSheary, even a single hair out of place would gut me.โ€

Shermaineโ€™s heart beat faster, warmth flooding her chest. She thought, โ€˜This man really knows how to get to me.โ€™

Lowering her head to hide a smile, she changed the subject. โ€œDonโ€™t tell Mom or Ross.โ€ No need to worry them over something so trivial. Otherwise, they would probably lose sleep over it.

Kylie rarely failed missions. This was her second strike. Fuming, she had barely left campus when someone from the lab called her, saying the experiment results had gone wrong and needed her immediate attention.

She had no interest in dealing with that lab at all, but the assignment came from the organization. She couldnโ€™t say no. โ€œFine. Iโ€™m on my way now.โ€

At 10 p.m., Joshua stepped out of the shower and froze when he saw the bed and the floor completely covered in sheets of scratch paper. Shermaine had fallen asleep on the bed, still fully dressed, her head resting on her arms.

The room was chilly with Septemberโ€™s night chill. He tucked her under the blankets, gathered the papers neatly onto the nightstand, and then sat watching her.

Five days slipped by. The twin prime conjecture proved as stubborn as expected. Despite Shermaineโ€™s efforts, the solution eluded her, though she wasnโ€™t losing sleep over it.

Since the falling object incident, the assassin had vanished. Clearly, the assassin was surprisingly patient.

During class, Shermaine received a message from Danielle. It was a photo of Jason unloading relief supplies.

Frustrated, Danielle sent another message: [Sheary, how do I make him give up?]

Jason might have been persistent, even better at chasing girls than Ross, but he just wasnโ€™t Danielleโ€™s type.

Shermaine replied: [Just ignore him.]

Danielle: [I am ignoring him!]

[Iโ€™m technically keeping things under control, but that doesnโ€™t mean itโ€™s totally safe. What if something happens to Jason? That would be troublesome.]

From the way Jason had tried to impress Danielleโ€™s father, it was clear he had his own agenda.

At the golf course, Danielle keenly discerned Jamesonโ€™s intentions.

Shermaine: [Get him to talk and record it.]

Danielle: [Good idea.]

In Lightspring City, right after sending the message, Danielle saw Jason approaching with a bottle of water. He looked handsome and definitely drew attention wherever he went. The nearby female doctors and nurses even gave Danielle teasing looks.

Chapter 291

โ€œDr. Sheth, hereโ€™s some water.โ€

Danielle wouldnโ€™t take it. โ€œNot thirsty. This isnโ€™t a field trip. You should leave.โ€ She was genuinely annoyed by Jason, who had skipped school just to show she was there.

โ€œYouโ€™re here. Why wouldnโ€™t I be?โ€ Jason said, still smiling as he held the bottle tightly.

โ€œIโ€™m scared, but Iโ€™m a doctor. Itโ€™s my duty to help. The supplies have been delivered. Thereโ€™s no reason for you to stay. If anything happens, no one will take responsibility for you.โ€

โ€œDr. Sheth, are you afraid youโ€™d have to take responsibility for me?โ€

Danielle rolled her eyes.

Jason continued, โ€œYou donโ€™t have to worry. Even if something does happen, I wonโ€™t hold you responsible. Iโ€™m an adult. I can take care of myself.โ€

His words earned him approving looks from others around them. After all, he was only twenty, yet he sounded surprisingly mature.

Such a good-looking guy kept chasing Danielle, but she still wasnโ€™t interested. People around them couldnโ€™t help but shake their heads in disappointment.

โ€œDr. Sheth, Jason is a catch, way better than your scumbag ex,โ€ a nurse chimed in.

Danielle instinctively retorted, โ€œRoss isnโ€™t a scumbag.โ€

The nurse snorted, โ€œHe had tabloid scandals.โ€

Danielle clenched her jaw.

The nurse eyed Jason. โ€œLook at him. Heโ€™s young and handsome, yet you donโ€™t even notice.โ€ Her tone turned sour. โ€œWell, with your standards, youโ€™re no shortage of amazing suitors. Tsk, no wonder heโ€™s not good enough.โ€

Danielleโ€™s gaze frosted over. โ€œGlad we agree.โ€

The nurse recoiled, chastised.

But Danielleโ€™s mood had soured. No one got to judge Ross, especially not in front of her. After all, she still had feelings for him.

Ross received the photo from Shermaineโ€“the one showing Jason unloading supplies. There was no way Ross could sit still anymore.

He missed Danielle. But lately, she hadnโ€™t been replying to his messages. He thought she mustโ€™ve been busy. Only when he saw the photo did he realize the truth: Danielle wasnโ€™t too busy to check her phone. She just didnโ€™t want to reply to him.

Jasonโ€™s presence set off alarms. Ross thought, โ€˜That scheming brat is up to something. In addition, Jamesonโ€™s sudden camaraderie with Tim at the golf club only deepened this suspicion.'

The assistant droned on with a report until Ross cut in, โ€œGet the VP here.โ€

The assistant nodded and hurried off to fetch the VP.

Once the VP arrived, Ross handed over all his responsibilities. After wrapping things up, he turned to his assistant. โ€œPrepare some relief supplies. Weโ€™re heading to Lightspring City tomorrow morning.โ€

The assistant asked, โ€œYouโ€™re going yourself?โ€

โ€œMm.โ€ Ross nodded.

Chapter 294

The assistant hid a grin and quickly got to work. He thought, โ€˜Mr. Jean is finally making his move on Dr. Sheth.โ€™

The next afternoon, after working nonstop without even a sip of water, Danielle finally got a chance to catch her breath and return to the camp for a short rest when another doctor finally took over her shift.

As she walked into the camp, three trucks full of aid supplies were arriving. She caught a distant glance and then spotted a familiar figure stepping out of one of the vehicles.

She thought she was seeing things. But soon, she recognized that it was Ross. In an instant, her heart started racing uncontrollably.
