Chapter 292
Even a small egg dropped from that height could crack a skull. If it hit someone on the head, it could result in brain damage at best or death at worst.
When Shermaine turned, the girl who had called out stammered incoherently. Shermaine frowned and turned back toward the dorm entrance.
โWโwait,โ the girlโs voice sharpened with urgency.
Shermaine had already given her a chance to speak. If she couldnโt spit it out now, she never would. Sighing, she resumed walking.
Just then, a loud shout came from the opposite dorm building. โWatch your head, Shermaine!โ
Her reflexes kicked in. Shermaine instantly looked up and saw the potted plant falling rapidly straight toward her. In one swift motion, she stepped backward just in time. The pot shattered inches from her feet.
Shermaineโs gaze snapped to the rooftop. For a split second, she had seen a shadow on the rooftop. By legal definition, that was attempted murder. She glanced upward again, but whoever had been there was already gone.
She turned back to the girl who had called her name. The girl looked completely stunned, her face pale with shock, clearly not part of the plot.
Throughout all of this, Shermaineโs phone call with Joshua had never disconnected. He had heard everything. His expression darkened. โSheary, are you okay?โ he asked, his voice low and tight.
โIโm fine,โ Shermaine replied calmly.
But Joshua wasnโt convinced. โIโm coming over right now.โ
She didnโt try to stop him. โBring me something to eat. Iโm hungry.โ
โWhat do you want?โ
โLobster soup.โ
โGot it.โ
As soon as Shermaine hung up, she called the police. She filed an official report. Later, she could make sure the culprit was locked up for good.
The voice that had shouted the warning from the opposite dorm belonged to Lorenzo. He hurried downstairs to Shermaine. โYou alright?โ
Shermaine had just finished reporting to the police. โIโm fine. Did you see the person on the roof?โ
โYeah,โ Lorenzo said. โBut it was too dark and far to make out the face.โ Plus, the person had been wearing a mask and hat.
Shermaine nodded. โThanks.โ Without his warning, that planter mightโve crushed her head. โIf you ever need help, just ask.โ
Lorenzo shrugged. โJust instinct.โ He would have done the same for anyone.
The police arrived swiftly, followed by a teacher. A deliberately dropped planter constituted attempted murder. It was unthinkable on campus.
Officers combed the dorm, but the surveillance footage showed no trace of the suspect. The rooftop yielded no clues either. The plant itself belonged to a girl living on the 14th floor. She grew succulents, but after investigation, she was quickly ruled out as the culprit.
With no leads, finding that would-be killer seemed impossible. But one thing was clear. This was a premeditated attack. Whoever it was wouldnโt stop at one attempt.
