Chapter 268

Madeline deserved this, but the Jean family owed her too much. Considering Ross and Shermaine, Janice couldnโ€™t simply hand Madelineโ€™s position to Jamesonโ€™s mistress. If Madeline wanted to keep the marriage despite being swindled, Janice might just back her this once.

Lost in thought, Janice studied Madeline until Shermaineโ€™s arrival cut the tension.

โ€œSheary, youโ€™re back?โ€ Janiceโ€™s anger cooled at the sight of Shermaine.

Shermaine said, โ€œI heard someone got conned out of money and dignity, even sold her shares. So I came to see the spectacle.โ€

Janice sighed.

โ€œRoss will be here soon,โ€ Shermaine added.

โ€œGood.โ€ Janice nodded. โ€œWeโ€™ll handle this together when he arrives.โ€

Madelineโ€™s face flushed beet red. Being mocked outright by Shermaine made her wish the floor would swallow her whole.

Then a thought struck Madeline: โ€˜Shermaine is sharp. Maybe she can recover that ten billion dollars for me. As for the shares? Itโ€™s too late now. Anyway, they didnโ€™t go to Jameson and that mistress.โ€™

Ten minutes later, a car pulled up outside the residence.

Danielle nudged Ross in the passenger seat. โ€œWeโ€™re here.โ€

Ross opened his eyes, held her hand, and murmured, โ€œMm.โ€

Danielle had been repaying her โ€œdebtโ€ by taking care of Ross through his fever since yesterday. When he didnโ€™t let her go, she yanked her hand back. โ€œYour fever just broke. Remember to take your meds tonight.โ€

โ€œI will.โ€ Ross nodded.

โ€œGo inside,โ€ she urged. โ€œDonโ€™t keep Sheary waiting.โ€

Ross watched Danielle, this handsome man with his striking features, his gaze simmering with quiet intensity. A sudden urge surged within him.

He missed Danielle, the one who had teased him in that sweet, playful voice. If she flirted with him now, he couldnโ€™t resist. But ever since she had broken up with him, her warmth had vanished.

Lowering his gaze to hide his disappointment, Ross asked, โ€œArenโ€™t you coming in to see Sheary?โ€

Danielle shook her head. โ€œItโ€™s a family matter. Wouldnโ€™t my presence be awkward?โ€

Ross said, โ€œWe wouldnโ€™t mind.โ€

โ€œNo. Janice might read too much into us arriving together.โ€ Danielle stayed firm.

Frustrated, Ross got out of the car. Inside the house, he greeted Shermaine and Janice, while pointedly ignoring Madeline as if she didnโ€™t even exist.

Janice studied him. โ€œRoss, howโ€™s the fever?โ€

Ross replied, โ€œMostly recovered.โ€

The healthy flush on his face told Shermaine everything. Danielle had taken excellent care of him last night.

Seizing the moment, Madeline shamelessly pleaded, โ€œSheary, I was wrong. Iโ€™m your mother. Youโ€™re so capable. Can you track down that scammer and get my money back?โ€ Just thinking about the lost billions made her feel heartbroken.

Shermaineโ€™s gaze turned glacial. Her voice, though soft, struck like a blade. โ€œMy mother wasnโ€™t this stupid. She was brilliant. And that money was never yours to begin with. Even if I find it, you wonโ€™t see a cent.โ€

Janice stiffened. She thought, โ€˜What does Sheary mean? This woman isnโ€™t Ruth?โ€™

Ross pressed his lips into a thin line, silent.

Madelineโ€™s face drained of color.

Janice stammered, โ€œSheary, youโ€ฆ Are you saying sheโ€™sโ€ฆโ€

Shermaine nodded. โ€œGrandma, sheโ€™s not my mother. She's Madeline Guston.โ€
