Time flew by, and Shermaineโs orientation had been going on for nearly a week. She hadnโt tanned much, mostly because her professor had frequently called her into the lab, leaving little time for outdoor training with her classmates.
That morning, while in the lab, she received a phone call from Janice. Janiceโs voice carried a hint of worry. โSheary, Ross suddenly broke out in terrible rashes all over his body. Come home and take a look at him.โ
Shermaine said, โGrandma, donโt panic. Iโm on my way.โ
Instead of rushing Ross to the hospital, Janice immediately called Shermaine because she knew her granddaughterโs medical skills surpassed those of most doctors. Besides, Ross had stubbornly refused to go to the hospital. Now, he was even showing signs of a fever.
Shermaine excused herself from school and took a cab back to the Jean residence. After examining Ross, she confirmed it was hives. His skin was already inflamed in patches, unbearably itchy, with his neck area looking particularly severe.
Lying in bed, the usually composed and handsome man now looked pale and fragile, his lips faintly colorless. Ross asked, โSheary, can you suppress the allergy quickly?โ
Shermaine frowned, โYou have something urgent to do?โ
Ross nodded. โYeah. There is a crucial business deal this afternoon.โ
She pressed, โWhat did you eat this morning?โ Ross was meticulous about hygiene, so hives shouldnโt have been an issue for him.
Ross had oatmeal for breakfast with Janice, so that shouldnโt have been the culprit. However, he admitted to poor sleep lately and an extra cup of coffee this morning.
Shermaine asked, โDid you make the coffee yourself?โ
Ross shook his head. โNo, the maid made it.โ
The maid, standing nearby, paled and immediately stepped forward to explain, โSir, I swear I didnโt put anything harmful in it.โ
Shermaine turned to her. โDid you leave the kitchen at any point while preparing it?โ
The maid thought for a moment, then nodded. โYes, I did.โ
โWhat for?โ Shermaine asked.
The maid replied honestly, โJameson asked me to fetch a document for him upstairs while I was grinding the beans.โ
A heavy silence fell over the room. It was clear who had tampered with the coffee.
Ross was certain Jameson had drugged him to sabotage the business deal.
The client despised tardiness or cancellations. If Ross couldnโt make it, Jameson would step in as his replacement. But Ross needed concrete proof.
Shermaine pressed her lips into a thin line, her gaze icy. Jameson had dared to poison his son. There was no telling what he might do next.
After checking Ross, Shermaine wrote two prescriptions, one for oral medication and the other for topical treatment. โRoss, rest for now. Iโll prepare the medicine. The itching is unbearable, but try not to scratch.โ
โGot it.โ Ross had impressive self-control. Despite the maddening itch, he hadnโt once touched the inflamed areas. โThanks, Sheary.โ
Shermaine gently tucked his blanket before leaving the room.
Janiceโs face remained stern throughout. โRoss, Iโll hold your father accountable for this.โ
Ross shook his head. โDonโt, Grandma. Stay out of it.โ
โNo. I canโt let him keep getting away with this. Heโs bold enough to drug you today. Who knows what heโllโฆโ Janice didnโt finish, but they both knew that Jameson was capable of far worse one day.
