Chapter 255

Jasperโ€™s eyes darkened. โ€œDo you think Iโ€™m only with you for the money?โ€

Ruth didnโ€™t say anything.

โ€œIโ€™ve been with you all this time. When have I ever asked you for money?โ€ Jasper said.

She had to admit he had a point. Ruth found herself wondering if this guy, who was more than ten years younger than her, actually loved her.

The thought sent little ripples through her heart, and she felt herself falling even deeper into the trap Natalie had so carefully set for her.

Ross was another one who didnโ€™t make it home for dinner that night. That earring of Danielleโ€™s had been eating at him, and he couldnโ€™t let it go. After work, he grabbed the earrings and headed straight to the hospital.

When people saw him show up, nobody dared call him a scumbag to his face. Besides, he had this refined, gentlemanly appearance that made him look like some kind of aristocrat, way too classy for anyone to mess with.

Ross walked up to the neurosurgery front desk. โ€œIs Dr. Shelly in?โ€

The nurse at the desk looked curious. โ€œWhat do you need Dr. Shelly for?โ€ She thought, โ€˜They broke up already, so whyโ€™s he here looking for Dr. Shelly? Is he trying to get back together?โ€™

But she was way off base. โ€œShe left something at my place,โ€ Ross said simply.

โ€œOh,โ€ the nurse replied. โ€œDr. Shelly went out to grab dinner, but she should be back soon. Sheโ€™s got rounds to do later tonight.โ€

Danielle definitely hadnโ€™t gone out to eat alone. She never would have expected Janice to set her up on a blind date, especially with Henry, someone sheโ€™d only met once before.

Luckily, sheโ€™d met Henry once before and heโ€™d made a good impression on her. They actually hit it off pretty well when they talked.

What surprised Henry the most was that Janice had actively reached out to play matchmaker for him, and the person she wanted to set him up with was Danielle. Sure, there wasnโ€™t any romantic spark between them, but they made decent friends.

Ross heard that Danielle would be back soon, so he decided to wait around for her return. He wasnโ€™t about to make the trip for nothing.

He stood by the window, watching the busy street below, with a clear view of the crowds flowing in and out of the hospitalโ€™s main entrance.

Just like the nurse had said, Danielle showed up before long.

A sports car pulled up in front of the hospital, and Danielle got out.

The driverโ€™s window rolled down, revealing Henry with a big smile as he looked at Danielle. Ross couldnโ€™t hear what they were saying, but they seemed to be having a great time chatting.

Watching this scene unfold, Ross felt something heavy settle in his chestโ€“some kind of emotion he couldnโ€™t quite put his finger on.

Janice had actually followed through on her word and introduced Danielle to Henry.

After saying goodbye to Henry, Danielle headed into the medical building. When she came upstairs, she found Ross standing outside her office door.

They hadnโ€™t seen each other since they went their separate ways that day.

When Danielle spotted him, she frowned, โ€œMr. Jean, what are you doing here?โ€

โ€œReturning your earring,โ€ Ross said.

โ€œDidnโ€™t I tell you to throw it away?โ€

โ€œThat earring was expensive.โ€

Danielle rolled her eyes. โ€˜Whatever, Iโ€™d actually feel bad if he really threw it out,โ€™ she thought. โ€œThanks. Hand it over.โ€

Ross didnโ€™t make any move to give it to her. โ€œIโ€™m thirsty.โ€

Danielle stared at him for a moment, then pushed open her office door. โ€œFine, come in.โ€

Ross followed her inside. Danielle grabbed a disposable cup and poured him some warm water, then sat down at her desk and pulled out her phone to check the time. She completely ignored him after that. Her attitude couldnโ€™t have been any colder.

โ€œHow are things going with Henry?โ€ Ross asked.

Danielle wasnโ€™t planning to respond to him at all, but hearing that question made her inexplicably angry. โ€œHenry and I get along great. Heโ€™s funny and thoughtful. Actually, when you get back, do me a favor and tell Mrs. Jean thanks for setting us up.โ€

Ross gripped his water glass. โ€œIโ€™m just here to drop off your earring.โ€ His tone made it clear he wasnโ€™t about to play messenger for anyone.

Danielle didnโ€™t seem to care either way. Her eyes crinkled with amusement. โ€œFine by me. When Henry and I actually get together, Iโ€™ll invite Mrs. Jean to dinner myself.

โ€œJust drink up and get out of here. I donโ€™t have time to babysit you.โ€

Ross had no words for that. He left the hospital that night with his face stone cold.
