Unrepairable Love Chapter 328
โHey, Dr. Percy!โ Elizabeth was munching on her lunch when Laura suddenly called out and plopped down across from her.
Elizabeth flashed a smile. โDr. Dixon, whatโs the deal?โ
โGot any plans after work? If not, how about I treat you to dinner?โ Laura asked, her smile friendly.
Elizabethโs radar went off. Laura was always nice, but today she was laying it on thick.
โDr. Dixon, you need something?โ Elizabeth figured Laura had an agenda; otherwise, why the sudden dinner invite?
Laura looked a bit awkward. She hesitated. โItโs kinda hard to say.โ
Elizabeth waved it off. โNo worries. Just spit it out.โ
โIโd rather talk over dinner!โ Laura said, trying to dodge the question.
Elizabeth sighed but agreed. โAlright, letโs hit up that restaurant across the street tonight.โ
Laura beamed, then took off. Elizabeth watched her go, feeling a bit puzzled but didnโt press it.
After work, Elizabeth headed to the restaurant. Laura had left work early and already snagged a table and ordered food. Laura waved her over. She was rocking a black dress, a far cry from her usual white coat. But what really caught Elizabethโs eye was the little boy with her, about six years old.
Elizabeth sat down, feeling a bit uneasy.
โDr. Percy, meet my son, Howard Hughes,โ Laura introduced with a smile. โSorry, I had to pick him up from school.โ
Elizabeth nodded. The kid was cute but super shy.
The table was loaded with the priciest dishes on the menu. Elizabeth knew Lauraโs salary and figured this meal was a big splurge.
โDr. Dixon, just spill it,โ Elizabeth said, sipping her juice. She hated beating around the bush.
Laura looked at her, clearly embarrassed. After a long pause, Laura finally spoke. โElizabeth, you know the departmentโs picking a new deputy director, right?โ
Elizabeth nodded; everyone knew.
โEveryone says youโre a shoo-in for the job,โ Elizabeth said.
Laura shook her head. โTheyโre just talking.โ
โPeople seem serious. You and Mark started together, and now that heโs gone, itโs natural for you to step up,โ Elizabeth said.
Laura blinked. โYou really think so?โ
โTotally,โ Elizabeth laughed.
Elizabeth was cutting into her steak when she paused. โDr. Dixon, worried Iโll snatch the deputy director role from you? Is that whyโฆyou asked me here?โ
Laura looked down, clearly busted.
Yeah, that was it. She wanted to talk to Elizabeth. If she could, Laura hoped Elizabeth wouldnโt go for the position. Elizabeth had money and connections, rendering this job unnecessary. But Laura was different. She was divorced, raising a kid, and her family relied on her. She needed this job for a shot at promotion. Even though people said it was all about skill and experience, Laura knew power played a big role. Especially after Elizabethโs stellar performance today, Laura was feeling the heat.
Elizabeth got it. She laughed. โDr. Dixon, all this fuss over a job. This world is reallyโฆโ
