Listen to this chapter:

โ€œLila,โ€ Elizabeth called out softly, her voice thick with emotion.

Lila gently brushed a stray hair from Elizabethโ€™s ear and nodded. โ€œIโ€™m here, Elizabeth.โ€

Elizabeth clutched her chest, tears in her eyes, her heart aching. โ€œWeโ€™re getting divorced. Iโ€™ve decided to let him go, so why does it still hurt?โ€ Elizabeth frowned, hoping Lila had an answer.

Elizabeth wondered if Lila understood the electrifying pain she felt seeing Lane cling to Alexander.

โ€œElizabeth, you just need time,โ€ Lila reassured her.

Elizabeth loved Alexander deeply, willing to sacrifice everything for him. Letting go wasnโ€™t easy.

โ€œBut Lila,โ€ Elizabethโ€™s tears flowed, โ€œhe never chose me. When Esme and I fell, he protected Esme. He said heโ€™d take me home, but as soon as he saw Esme, he left me. Whenever Esme got hurt, he blamed me.โ€

Why couldnโ€™t she let go after all this?

Elizabeth felt like a wronged child, pouring her heart out to Lila. โ€œIt really hurts,โ€ she said. Loving Alexander was painful. If she could, she wished sheโ€™d never met him.

โ€œLila, am I not worthy of love?โ€ Elizabeth asked.

Lilaโ€™s heart ached. โ€œElizabeth, donโ€™t overthink it. Youโ€™re brave and passionate. Alexander just isnโ€™t the right one for you.โ€

Elizabethโ€™s eyes, smudged with eyeliner, looked like a sad panda. โ€œReally?โ€

Lila felt like crying and laughing. โ€œOf course, you deserve love. Look, donโ€™t I love you?โ€ She tried to wipe Elizabethโ€™s makeup but only made it worse.

โ€œWait here, Iโ€™ll get a wet wipe,โ€ Lila said.

Elizabeth nodded.

โ€œDonโ€™t go anywhere!โ€ Lila reminded her. โ€œIf you get lost, I wonโ€™t come looking for you!โ€

Elizabeth tended to wander when she drank too muchโ€”she frowned at Lilaโ€™s nagging. Lila hurried to find a waiter for wet wipes.

Elizabeth leaned back on the sofa. After a while, her mind grew hazy, and she forgot Lilaโ€™s instructions. She got up and went to the dance floor, grabbing a man. โ€˜Am I not worthy of being liked?โ€™

โ€œMs. Percy, are you okay?โ€ the man asked, worried.

โ€œAnswer my question!โ€ Elizabeth demanded.

โ€œOf course, Ms. Percy, youโ€™re definitely worthy.โ€

Satisfied, Elizabeth moved to the next person. She walked unsteadily, her face flushed, her smudged makeup making her look cute and comical. She squatted down, and a pair of menโ€™s shoes appeared in front of her.

Elizabeth felt her stomach churn, ready to throw up. Suddenly, there was a hush, and everyone stepped back. Elizabeth closed her eyes, numbed by alcohol. She tried to stand but leaned forward too quickly. A warm hand caught her waist, holding her up. She furrowed her brow and looked up hazily.

The stage lights were dim, and she couldnโ€™t see the personโ€™s face clearly. She asked softly, โ€˜Am I not worthy of love?โ€™

The person frowned, puzzled.

โ€œIf not, why doesnโ€™t the person I like, like me?โ€ Elizabeth looked up again, stepping on his black shoes, everything feeling so natural.
