Chapter 720
Ivy had never heard the details about Jamison beating up Carlaโs husband.
Now, listening to the brothers talk, she finally understoodโFarley Shepherd owed much of his current success to the Ludwig familyโs influence.
Yet, even though heโd risen so high on the coattails of his wifeโs family, heโd still had the nerve to betray her, keeping a mistress and an illegitimate child on the side.
โThat bastardโI told him to sign the divorce papers and walk away with nothing, but he absolutely refused! For years, heโs been moving money out of the countryโfifty, sixty million, easily. Itโs all gone to that tramp and her son!โ Carlaโs voice shook with anger and tears as she lashed out at her cheating husband, every word dripping with bitterness.
โAnd even after all that, he still wants to split what littleโs leftโhalf for me and Micah, half for him! I wonโt let him get away with it. If it comes down to it, Iโll drag him down with me before I let him take our money to spoil his mistress!โ
Ivy frowned as she listened.
For Carla to say something like that, she mustโve been pushed to the edge. With Micahโs condition, there wasnโt much left for her to lose. If she had to, sheโd go down fightingโif only to reclaim a shred of dignity.
โEnough of this nonsense! Is it really worth it for the money? Itโs not like the Ludwig family canโt afford Micahโs treatments. Why sink any lower dealing with that scum?โ Dannyโs voice was stern as he scolded her. After a momentโs thought, he made a decision. โJust divorce him. Donโt ask for anything. Let him think heโs won for now.โ
Carla turned to her father, her voice hoarse. โDad, do you have a way to make him pay?โ
Danny hadnโt spoken yet when Thad let out a cold laugh. โThereโs always a way. Just takes the right opportunity. Like the old saying goesโpride comes before a fall. Let him have his moment.โ
The truth was, Thad had only just gotten back from a business trip and hadnโt had time to figure out how to deal with Farley. But dragging things out with someone like that would only wear Carla down. It wasnโt worth it.
โThadโs right. No need to tangle with him any longer. Get the divorce over with.โ Jamison had finished his meal and set his fork down, agreeing with his brother.
Carla looked at the two of them, wiped her tears away, and after a long silence, ground out, โI just canโt swallow this humiliationโฆโ
Jamison said, โThink of it this wayโdo it for Mom. The bigger the scene you make, the longer you drag it out, the more sheโll worry.โ
Carla fell silent.
Sheโd been so caught up in the chaos of her own life lately, sheโd barely thought about how it was affecting their mother.
โItโs my fault. Iโm too old to have my life in shambles like this, making my parents worry about me,โ Carla whispered, dabbing at her eyes, head bowed in genuine remorse.
Only now did she truly realize the mistakes sheโd made.
โI spoiled Micah, pushed him down this path, and if Iโd listened to you all sooner, my things wouldnโt have ended up like this. Now Micah might never wake up, my husbandโs betrayed meโthis is my punishment. I deserve itโฆโ
She kept muttering, her regret painfully real.
But thereโs no turning back time.
After dinner, Ivy joined Jamison to check on Adela in her room.
Sure enough, the old womanโs eyes were redโsheโd clearly been crying, too.
โJamison, you have to help your sister,โ Adela pleaded, her worry plain. โNo matter what sheโs done in the past, now she has no one but us to rely onโฆโ
Thatโs what parents are like. Theyโre always most anxious about the child whoโs struggling, even when itโs their own fault.
Jamison nodded. โDonโt worry, Mom. With Thad and me here, Farley Shepherd wonโt get far.โ
Adela finally relaxed a little, then turned to Ivy, her expression softer than usual. โAnd youโฆ How are you feeling?โ
โIโm much better, Mom.โ Ivyโs heart softened at the sight of her motherโinโlaw like this, and her tone grew gentler, letting old grievances go.
โTake care of yourself. We still have our threeโyear pact, remember? If I donโt hold up my end, youโll kick me out of the Ludwig family.โ
Ivy said it halfโjokingly, trying to lighten the mood.
To her surprise, Adela managed a wry smile. โIโm not sure Iโll have the strength for that, honestly.โ
โHow could you not? If the time comes, just put on a sceneโcry, shout, threaten Jamison a bit. Heโd fold in a heartbeat.โ
Ivyโs teasing finally coaxed a real laugh out of Adela.
โHonestly, I never liked you all that much,โ the old woman admitted quietly. โBut Jamison does, and I understandโthis is your life, not mine. If youโre happy, then thatโs what mattersโฆโ
A strange sadness swept over Ivy. She couldnโt say why, but something about Adelaโs words tonight felt like she was saying goodbye.
