Chapter 652

Listen to this chapter:

โ€œMom, you stay home and look after Dad. Iโ€™ll go to the hospital.โ€

Baillie hurried after the EMTs, climbing into the ambulance as they rushed Emma to the ER.

Truth be told, he almost wished for a traffic jam, something to slow them down. If Emma died on the way, that would be just fine by him.

A fall, a pregnancy, massive blood loss โ€“ if she died before they got to the hospital, there wouldnโ€™t be much the police could do to him.

At the hospital, theyโ€™d barely wheeled Emma into the operating room when the doctor came out. โ€œThe fetus doesnโ€™t have a heartbeat. We need to perform a procedure, fast. Where are her family members? We need consent.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m her brother,โ€ Baillie said. โ€œCan I sign?โ€

โ€œHer brother? Normally, no. It has to be a direct relative โ€“ parent or spouse.โ€ The doctor frowned, then added, โ€œWhereโ€™s the father? Sheโ€™s pregnant; the baby must have a father.โ€

Baillie improvised, โ€œThe fatherโ€™s very sick โ€“ heโ€™s bedridden. Canโ€™t come.โ€

In truth, he had no idea what was going on with Sheridan Carter, but he wasn't about to waste time worrying about that.

While he hesitated, a nurse burst out, frantic. โ€œHer blood pressureโ€™s dropping fast. If we donโ€™t operate right now, she wonโ€™t make it!โ€

Baillie stayed silent. Whether Emma lived or died, it wasnโ€™t his problem.

But the doctor had a duty. โ€œFine. You sign first, then notify the rest of the family. Weโ€™ll do everything we can.โ€

โ€œThank you, doctor.โ€ Baillie scrawled his name on the consent form. The medical team rushed back in and started the surgery.

Baillie couldnโ€™t help feeling a flicker of doubt.

Everyone knew the father of Emmaโ€™s child was a mystery, but as long as she was still officially Sheridanโ€™s fiancรฉe, the law โ€“ and public opinion โ€“ would see the baby as his.

After a momentโ€™s hesitation, Baillie managed to get through to the Carter family and told them what happened.

They already loathed Emma. On hearing the news, they just spat out, โ€œGood riddance!โ€ and hung up.

Whether theyโ€™d bother telling Sheridan, Baillie didnโ€™t know.

Not long after, the medical staff rushed out again. โ€œHer conditionโ€™s critical. The bleeding wonโ€™t stop and thereโ€™s a serious infection. If things get worse, we may have to remove her uterus. We need another signature.โ€

Baillie didnโ€™t hesitate โ€“ he grabbed the pen and signed.

This time, the nurse was startled. She quickly pulled the form away and stared at him. โ€œShouldnโ€™t you talk to your brother-in-law first? If we take her uterus, sheโ€™ll never have children again.โ€

Baillie shrugged, โ€œTheyโ€™re both HIV positive. Having kids would only cause more pain.โ€

The nurse was speechless.

Baillie snatched back the consent form and scribbled his signature.

The nurse glared at him. โ€œDid your sister take something she shouldnโ€™t have during her pregnancy? The placentaโ€™s grown right into the uterine wall. No wonder sheโ€™s bleeding like this. You people are reckless!โ€

Baillie knew nothing about pregnancies. He hadnโ€™t even realized Emma had been taking medication to keep the baby.

He didnโ€™t know that, desperate not to lose the child, Emma had secretly bought drugs online โ€“ anything to help the placenta take root.

The nurse disappeared back inside. Just then, Baillieโ€™s phone rang โ€“ his mother, Rosetta.

โ€œMomโ€ฆโ€

โ€œWhatโ€™s happening? Is the baby going to make it?โ€ Rosettaโ€™s voice trembled on the line.

โ€œShe got to the hospital, but the fetus was already gone,โ€ Baillie said. โ€œNow the doctors say they might not be able to save her uterus, either.โ€

Rosetta let out a stunned gasp, lost for words.

After hanging up, Baillie glanced at his phone, thinking about everything going on at home. He didnโ€™t have a second to spare โ€“ he immediately tried calling Ivy.

No answer.

Panicked, he snapped a photo of the glowing โ€œEmergencyโ€ sign and sent it to Ivy in a text.
