Chapter 643
Those unplanned, unwanted little livesโmost of them were lost before they ever had a chance. The thought alone felt like a heavy sin.
Jamison knew exactly what his wife was thinking. He pulled her gently into his arms and gave her a reassuring pat, speaking with the calm logic of a doctor. โA fetus isnโt technically a person until itโs born. And when it happens early, itโs not even formed yetโjust a cluster of cells. Itโs not life in any meaningful sense.โ
Ivy turned to look at him, exasperation flickering in her eyes. โYou doctorsโฆ Sometimes youโre all reason and no heart. Itโs like you forget to feel.โ
Jamison chuckled softly, leaning in to brush a kiss across her lips. โIโve told you beforeโdealing with life and death every day, we have to stay rational. If we let every loss get to us, weโd never make it.โ
She remembered, of course. Ivy shot him a look and let the conversation drop.
By the time they made it back to the faculty apartments, it was nearly eleven.
There was only one communal bathroom on that floor. To save time, Jamison insisted on showering together.
Ivy tried to protest, but before she knew it, she was already under the warm spray, pressed to his chest, her hair soaking wet. She wriggled, halfโlaughing, halfโaccusing, โSo you came all the way here just to force me into the shower with you?โ
He grinned, unrepentant. โTook you long enough to figure that out.โ
For Dr. Ludwig, getting to bathe his wife himself was a rare and cherished privilege. Ivy had grown used to his affectionโso much so that sheโd even started to enjoy his playful experiments, their relationship deepening and growing more exciting in these little ways.
Still, she could never quite relax when it came to showering together.
Especially when his hands roamed, unashamed and insistent, exploring every inch of her skin. She couldnโt help but tense, biting back a gasp, her brows knit in helpless embarrassment.
Jamison loved her most in these momentsโwhen she melted against him, her usual composure slipping, letting him take care of everything.

When things started getting heated, Jamison reached for the box of protection, only for Ivy to stop him.
โItโs almost that time,โ she murmured, cheeks flushed, voice shy. โWe donโt need it.โ
He understood immediately and pressed his forehead to hers, voice gentle. โThen just be careful these next few days. Donโt stay up late, avoid anything too spicy or raw, and call me if you feel even a little off.โ
โOkay, okayโฆโ She rolled her eyes at his fussing, then wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him, silencing any further warnings.
A few days later, Ivy got another call from Roberta.
Roberta had moved back into the student dorms and was calling to see if Ivy wanted to move in with her.
โDonโt get me wrong, Iโm just asking. When I was in the hospital, I overheard the doctors talking about your husbandโturns out heโs some hotshot, and his job keeps him way out of town, right? He canโt be here with you every night. I just thought, if we live together, we can look out for each other.โ
Ivy was surprised by how thoughtful Roberta wasโsheโd even guessed that Jamison didnโt have much time to keep Ivy company.
It was a good idea, but Ivy shook her head. โThanks, but I might have some trouble coming up, and I donโt want you to get caught up in it.โ
โTrouble? Is it those two people who came looking for me before?โ Roberta sounded shocked.
โYeah,โ Ivy said. โThey might try to get back at me. Iโd rather stay out of the dorms so you wonโt get dragged into it.โ
โOhโฆโ Roberta sounded a little dazed, but after a pause, she added, โBut that means you need someone with you even moreโhey, are you still studying in the library every day? I could join you when Iโm free.โ
Ivy wasnโt used to this kind of enthusiasm from people she barely knew, so she replied politely, โThatโs sweet, but I donโt want to take up your time.โ
Once the call ended, Ivy didnโt think about it again.
But the next day, Roberta turned up at the library.
To be precise, sheโd tracked Ivy down to the economics and finance sectionโa clever move.
Chapter 643
โCan we swap numbers again? I owe you a thousand.โ Roberta held out her phone.
Sheโd changed her number, so their old contact info was useless now.
Ivy blinked. โYou got the money already?โ
Roberta nodded, โI picked up some freelance gigs online. They just paid me for last monthโs work.โ
So Ivy took out her phone and accepted Robertaโs friend request. The transfer came through right away, and Ivy tapped to receive it.
At lunchtime, Roberta insisted on buying Ivy a meal.
As they left the reading room, Roberta caught sight of the two men trailing Ivy and stared, wideโeyed. โWho are theyโฆ?โ
โBodyguards,โ Ivy answered simply.
Robertaโs jaw dropped. After a moment, she managed, โYour situationโs that dangerous? You actually need bodyguards to follow you everywhere?โ
