Chapter 595

Listen to this chapter:

Ivy had just speared a piece of grilled beef when the words caught her off-guard. She froze, eyes wide. โ€œWait, are you saying sheโ€™s really sick?โ€

Jamisonโ€™s expression turned grave, his voice dropping to a murmur. โ€œItโ€™s not confirmed yet. Boyd Ludwigโ€™s been saying she hasnโ€™t left the hotel these past few days. But Micah did get checked at the hospitalโ€“they found heโ€™s got both genital warts and syphilis.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ Ivyโ€™s face twisted with disbelief, her emotions tangled and unreadable.

Just the mention of those diseases sent a wave of goosebumps down her arms, so much so that she lost her appetite for the tripe sheโ€™d been chewing.

Jamison went on, โ€œThey also screened him for HIV. So far, itโ€™s negative, but that doesnโ€™t mean heโ€™s in the clear; he could still be in the window period, not enough viral load to test positive yet.โ€

Ivy forced herself to swallow, letting out a weary sigh. โ€œI shouldnโ€™t have run my mouth. God, I hope heโ€™ll be okay. If anything happens to himโ€ฆ your sister only has the one kidโ€“sheโ€™d be crushed.โ€

โ€œYeah. My sisterโ€™s been calling me every day, asking if HIV is even treatable if he gets it.โ€ Jamison gave a short, self-deprecating laugh. โ€œLike Iโ€™ve got the answer to one of the worldโ€™s biggest medical puzzles.โ€

Deep down, he was hoping Micah would be all right, too.

Sure, his nephew had never amounted to muchโ€“always in trouble and never doing anything usefulโ€“but no one deserved this.

If he really did contract HIV, it would be a disaster for the Shepherd family. The sky might as well fall.

โ€œEmma hasnโ€™t even gone to get checked out? How can she be so unconcerned?โ€ Ivy shook her head in disbelief.

โ€œItโ€™s not that she doesnโ€™t care. Maybe she already knows how bad it is and figures it doesnโ€™t matter anymore.โ€

Ivy fell silent, at a loss for words.

โ€œAnd thereโ€™s something else. I only found out last night. I wonder if Katrina Lesterโ€“considering sheโ€™s directly involvedโ€“has heard from the police yet.โ€

Ivyโ€™s eyes widened again. โ€œWhat? Katrinaโ€™s caught up in this too? Donโ€™t tell me Sheridan Carterโ€™s out?โ€

Jamison nodded. โ€œYeah, released on medical parole.โ€

โ€œNo way. Since when does the Carter family have that much pull? They can even go up against Katrinaโ€™s old professor?โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s genuinely illโ€“meets the requirements for medical parole. Itโ€™s not a scam.โ€

โ€œWhatโ€™s he got, then?โ€ Ivy wondered if it was the same kind of โ€˜dirty diseaseโ€˜ as Micah.

โ€œI asked Boyd to look into it. We should hear something today. My guess is, heโ€™s got something similar to Emma. The real question is, did one infect the other, or did they both pick it up somewhere else?โ€

Ivy felt her scalp tingle with disgust. She just couldnโ€™t wrap her head around how peopleโ€™s personal lives could get so messy, how morals could sink so low.

All for a fleeting thrill, and look where it landed them. She wondered if they ever felt the slightest bit of regret.

Jamison kept grilling meat, adding pieces to the small bowl in front of her, but Ivy just held her fork, appetite gone.

Watching her husband dig into his food, she shrank back, frowning. โ€œDoesnโ€™t this gross you out? How can you still eat?โ€

Jamison only smiled. โ€œAre you questioning my professionalism?โ€

โ€œOhโ€“right, youโ€™re a doctor.โ€ Ivy nodded, suddenly sheepish.

โ€œIโ€™ve seen all kinds of gruesome, disgusting things over the years. If just talking about a disease was enough to put me off my dinner, Iโ€™d have starved to death long ago.โ€

Ivy nodded eagerly. โ€œTrue. I forgot youโ€™re a surgeon. Youโ€™re used to guts and goreโ€“this is nothing.โ€

Come to think of it, if the patient was right in front of him, heโ€™d probably still be calm, just doing his job.

But Ivy couldnโ€™t help it. Just hearing words like syphilis and warts made her skin crawl and her stomach churn.

โ€œDoctors like youโ€“seriously, hats off.โ€

Jamison shrugged. โ€œYou get used to it.โ€

They sat in silence for a moment, until Ivy suddenly blurted out, โ€œPromise me youโ€™ll be careful. I read in the news that HIV infections are skyrocketingโ€“over a million cases nationwide now. Being a doctor is so risky!โ€
