Listen to this chapter:

And now, a sudden worry gnawed at himโ€“had he just noticed some weird symptom? Was he infected with HPV?

Emma quietly made up her mind: tomorrow, sheโ€™d go get checked at a clinic, just to set her mind at ease.

Ivy was still preoccupied with the thought of Emmaโ€™s possible HPV infection even after they finished shopping and got back to the car.

If Emma really had caught the virus, it meant she hadnโ€™t used protection while hooking up with those guys. HPV was troublesome, sure, but most cases cleared up on their own. If, God forbid, sheโ€™d ended up with something like syphilis orโ€“worseโ€“HIV, it would be a death sentence.

Not long ago, sheโ€™d even joked about this with Katrina, saying that ever since Emma started working as Sheridanโ€™s escort, there was a real risk sheโ€™d pick up some nasty disease. Was she about to watch her own words come true?

Jamison drove in silence, but after glancing over and seeing Ivy lost in thought for the umpteenth time, he finally spoke up. โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong? Still thinking about Emma?โ€

Ivy blinked, snapped out of her reverie, and shared the conversation sheโ€™d had with her best friend.

โ€œYou know, you told just from talking to me that I didnโ€™t have HIV. Now that youโ€™ve seen Emma, can you tell if sheโ€™s got any symptoms?โ€ Ivy asked, genuinely curious.

Jamison chuckled. โ€œIโ€™m not some miracle doctor, you know.โ€

โ€œSo you canโ€™t tell?โ€

โ€œWell, just by looking, no. When I said you didnโ€™t have HIV, it wasnโ€™t just guesswork. I checked your neck and underarms, no swollen lymph nodes. I asked if youโ€™d had a feverโ€“you said no. You also told me the police made you get tested. I put it all together and was pretty confident you werenโ€™t infected.โ€

Truth be told, Ivy had always wondered about this but never had the chance to ask. Now, hearing his explanation, the pieces finally fit. She nodded, almost sheepish. โ€œI see. I thought you just needed a quick look and a poke.โ€

โ€œIf someoneโ€™s already showing symptoms, itโ€™s obvious. But if itโ€™s still in the incubation period, the only way to know for sure is to get tested.โ€

โ€œYeahโ€ฆโ€ Ivy murmured, nodding along. โ€œThank God I wasnโ€™t. If I had been, my life wouldโ€™ve been over.โ€

And thereโ€™s no way she and Jamison wouldโ€™ve ended up together.

She kept that thought to herself. Saying it out loud would only make things awkwardโ€“what could he possibly say back? No matter how much you love someone, if youโ€™re healthy, you just canโ€™t be with someone who has HIV. Even the most starry-eyed romantic would snap out of it at that point.

โ€œEnough of that,โ€ Jamison said gently, steering the conversation away from the downward spiral. โ€œText your girls, see how their dinner went.โ€

โ€œOh! I totally forgot.โ€ Ivy perked up, fishing out her phone. โ€œLet me check in.โ€

She quickly sent a message, asking if theyโ€™d finished eating.

Moments later, Katrina called her directly.

Ivy answered right away, her voice bubbly with anticipation. โ€œKatrina, you guys done eating? Howโ€™d it go with Mr. Wilson?โ€

Katrina put on a mock pout. โ€œOh, so now you remember me? You totally bailedโ€“you owe me!โ€

Ivy laughed. โ€œHey, I learned from the best.โ€

โ€œPlease. Back then, Dr. Ludwig already had a thing for youโ€“he wanted you all to himself. My situation is nothing like that!โ€

โ€œOkay, okay, my bad.โ€ Ivy admitted, laughing off the truth in her friendโ€™s words. โ€œSo how was dinner? Even if nothing romantic happens, you could still be friends, right?โ€

โ€œHonestly? Mr. Wilsonโ€™s great. We clicked on so many topics. I canโ€™t believe a guy like him is almost thirty and still single.โ€
