The aftermath of last nightโs revelry was that both of them slept right through the morningโwell past the usual hour.
It was the shrill ring of a phone that finally shattered the peace in their bedroom.
Jamison groped blindly along the nightstand, barely able to crack open his eyes. He fumbled for the call and mumbled, โHelloโฆโ
On the other end, Katrina sounded startled. โDr. Ludwig, are you and Ivy still in bed?โ Jamison frowned, squinting against the morning light. He switched the call to speaker and set the phone on the pillow next to his wife.
โIvy, your friendโs on the line,โ he muttered.
Katrina hurried to say, โOh, never mind! Go back to sleep. Iโll call later.โ
She was about to hang up, but Ivy had already stirred awake. Her eyes remained closed, voice still thick with sleep. โKatrinaโฆ is something wrong?โ
โSorry, Ivy, I didnโt mean to wake you,โ Katrina apologized. โYou used to get up so early when you were singleโI forgot youโre sharing a bed with Dr. Ludwig nowโฆโ
She meant nothing by it, but Ivy, now fully awake, shot a glare in Jamisonโs direction.
Jamison chuckled, leaning in to steal a kiss, only for Ivy to shove him away with a groan. She rolled over, taking the phone with her, her tone sharpening. โItโs fine. We should get up anyway. Whatโs up?โ
โOh, I just wanted to talk about dinner. Iโve arranged everything with Mr. Wilson for tonightโare you both free?โ
Ivy remembered her own plans and answered cheerfully, โIโm free, but Jamisonโs not. Iโll go on my ownโdonโt worry about him.โ
Dr. Ludwig, suddenly left out, blinked awake. โBut Iโm availโoof!โ
He barely got a word out before Ivyโs elbow jabbed him square in the ribs, where he was still sore. He let out a muffled grunt.
Katrina hesitated. โOh? Dr. Ludwig canโt make it? Maybe we should rescheduleโโ
โNo need. He wonโt miss one meal.โ
โAll right, Iโll text you the restaurant address in a bit.โ
โSounds good.โ
When the call ended, Ivy turned to find Jamison rubbing his chest, looking wounded.
Their eyes met, and Jamison grumbled, โWhy are you leaving me out?โ
โYou donโt get it! Iโm not going either.โ
โYouโre not?โ Jamison looked confused. โBut didnโt you just agree to go?โ
โIโm just going to show my face, then make an excuse to leave.โ
โWhy?โ
โNo reason. I just want to.โ In truth, Jamison didnโt approve of setting up Naylor and Katrina, so Ivy kept the real reason to herself.
But Jamison knew her too well.
He caught on quickly. โYouโre trying to give those two some alone time, arenโt you?โ Ivy didnโt deny it.
Jamison frowned. โIf you donโt want to go, just say so. Why bother showing up just to slip out?โ
โIf I say no, Katrina will just reschedule. Sheโll insist on waiting until Iโm free.โ
Jamison smirked. โSo youโre an equal-opportunity fibber, huh?โ
She conned her mother-in-law, her husband, and now her best friend.
Fair was fair.
Ivy glared, tempted to bite him. โYou know nothing! Iโm not lyingโIโm just looking out for her happiness. Besides, remember that dinner I hosted to thank you? I invited Katrina to keep me company, and as soon as you showed up, she made up an excuse and bolted.โ
Jamison remembered and couldnโt hold back a laugh. โWow, I didnโt realize you held grudges like that.โ
โAbsolutely!โ Ivy sat up, deliberately fierce. โSo you better not cross me, or Iโll get you back sooner or later.โ
Jamison grinned. โSo if I offend you in this life, will you track me down in the next just to settle the score?โ
