โBut itโs been days now. All the evidence is gone, and even if I went to the police, nothing would stick. It would just waste time and energy. She pulled back before things went too far, so I figure sheโs made up for it. I donโt want to pursue it any furtherโas long as I move out, thatโs enough.โ
After spending this time together, Ivy had gotten a pretty good sense of Robertaโs situation.
โHer familyโs pretty average, nothing special. She works hard, got into grad school on a scholarship, and it hasnโt been easy for her to get this far. I donโt want to blow this up and ruin her future.โ
Jamison looked at her in surprise. โSince when did you get so soft-hearted?โ
Ivy let out a quiet sigh. โMaybe I haveโฆ A while back, I would have made a huge deal out of thisโIโd have called the cops, gone to the university, made sure she was expelled, wrecked her whole future. But nowโฆโ
She glanced at Jamison, her expression gentle and calm. โNow I just think if you can show someone mercy, you should. Thereโs no need to push people over the edge. If I completely destroy her future, who knowsโmaybe one day sheโd come after me out of desperation. I really donโt need to make more enemies for myself.โ In truth, what mattered most was that Ivy didnโt think Roberta was a bad person at heart. She actually had potential.
Given that, Ivy was willing to let it goโcall it a good deed for her own conscience.
โIf youโre sure about this, Iโll back you up. Moving out is the right call. Iโll have Boyd look for a place near campus. You shouldnโt go back there tonight.โ
Ivy blinked in surprise. โBut thereโs no way I can move out tonight.โ
โJust stay at a hotel for now.โ
She stared at him, momentarily at a loss for words.
He really was a man of action.
โIโll go with you. Iโll head back to work early in the morningโit wonโt mess up my schedule.โ Jamison had already made all the arrangements, and just then, their food arrived.
โLetโs eat first.โ
Ivy nodded. She really was hungry, and thereโd be time to worry about everything else later.
Halfway through dinner, Boyd called.
โUncle, weโre keeping an eye on Emmaโnothing unusual so far. As for housing, thereโs a complex just across the street from Neo Haven Universityโs east gate. It was built for faculty, not open to the public, but I pulled some strings and got a two-bedroom apartmentโabout 900 square feet. That should be enough for Ivy, right?โ
Boyd worked fastโheโd secured a place in the time it took to eat dinner, and it was one of the universityโs own faculty apartments.
โGreat, send me the details. Iโll go take a look in a bit.โ
โWill do.โ
Having overheard, Ivy couldnโt help but admire, โYou guys are amazing. I canโt believe you managed to get a faculty apartment.โ
Jamison gave a faint smile. โYou shouldโve told me about this sooner. Then you wouldnโt have had to run around all day by yourself.โ
Ivy made a face. โI didnโt think it was that serious, and youโre busy with work. If Iโd told you, youโd just have dropped everything to come over, and that wasnโt necessary.โ
โIt was. Nothingโs more important than you.โ
Ivy bit back a smile, her heart filled with warmth and reassurance.
โAnd one more thingโcome with me to the hospital later for a full check-up.โ He was still worried that her old roommate hadnโt told the whole truth, and wanted to make sure Ivy was okay.
โNo need. As soon as I found out about this, I went to the hospital for tests right awayโeverythingโs fine.โ As she spoke, she pulled out a medical report from her bag. โSee for yourself.โ
Jamisonโs eyes widened in surprise, but he took the paperwork and flipped through it carefully.
โStill anemicโฆโ
โYeah, thatโs an old issue. Nothing serious.โ
Sheโd been severely malnourished when she was brought back, and several organs had been affected. But after months of care, sheโd mostly recovered. A little anemia was hardly worth mentioning.
Jamison finally relaxed after reviewing her results, though his tone was a bit curt. โYouโre certainly thoroughโhandling something this big all by yourself and not telling me a thing.โ
Ivy just pressed her lips together and looked at him, not knowing how to respond.
She really thought she could handle it herselfโthere was no need to trouble him with everything.
She was an adult, after all. Perfectly capable. Not some clueless idiot.
โDonโt let it happen again. Donโt make me worry.โ When his wife remained silent, Jamison added the warning.
โGot it.โ
By the time they finished dinner, Boyd had already sent over all the details for the apartment, and even arranged for someone to meet them.
