Listen to this chapter:

โ€œBut itโ€™s been days now. All the evidence is gone, and even if I went to the police, nothing would stick. It would just waste time and energy. She pulled back before things went too far, so I figure sheโ€™s made up for it. I donโ€™t want to pursue it any furtherโ€”as long as I move out, thatโ€™s enough.โ€

After spending this time together, Ivy had gotten a pretty good sense of Robertaโ€™s situation.

โ€œHer familyโ€™s pretty average, nothing special. She works hard, got into grad school on a scholarship, and it hasnโ€™t been easy for her to get this far. I donโ€™t want to blow this up and ruin her future.โ€

Jamison looked at her in surprise. โ€œSince when did you get so soft-hearted?โ€

Ivy let out a quiet sigh. โ€œMaybe I haveโ€ฆ A while back, I would have made a huge deal out of thisโ€”Iโ€™d have called the cops, gone to the university, made sure she was expelled, wrecked her whole future. But nowโ€ฆโ€

She glanced at Jamison, her expression gentle and calm. โ€œNow I just think if you can show someone mercy, you should. Thereโ€™s no need to push people over the edge. If I completely destroy her future, who knowsโ€”maybe one day sheโ€™d come after me out of desperation. I really donโ€™t need to make more enemies for myself.โ€ In truth, what mattered most was that Ivy didnโ€™t think Roberta was a bad person at heart. She actually had potential.

Given that, Ivy was willing to let it goโ€”call it a good deed for her own conscience.

โ€œIf youโ€™re sure about this, Iโ€™ll back you up. Moving out is the right call. Iโ€™ll have Boyd look for a place near campus. You shouldnโ€™t go back there tonight.โ€

Ivy blinked in surprise. โ€œBut thereโ€™s no way I can move out tonight.โ€

โ€œJust stay at a hotel for now.โ€

She stared at him, momentarily at a loss for words.

He really was a man of action.

โ€œIโ€™ll go with you. Iโ€™ll head back to work early in the morningโ€”it wonโ€™t mess up my schedule.โ€ Jamison had already made all the arrangements, and just then, their food arrived.

โ€œLetโ€™s eat first.โ€

Ivy nodded. She really was hungry, and thereโ€™d be time to worry about everything else later.

Halfway through dinner, Boyd called.

โ€œUncle, weโ€™re keeping an eye on Emmaโ€”nothing unusual so far. As for housing, thereโ€™s a complex just across the street from Neo Haven Universityโ€™s east gate. It was built for faculty, not open to the public, but I pulled some strings and got a two-bedroom apartmentโ€”about 900 square feet. That should be enough for Ivy, right?โ€

Boyd worked fastโ€”heโ€™d secured a place in the time it took to eat dinner, and it was one of the universityโ€™s own faculty apartments.

โ€œGreat, send me the details. Iโ€™ll go take a look in a bit.โ€

โ€œWill do.โ€

Having overheard, Ivy couldnโ€™t help but admire, โ€œYou guys are amazing. I canโ€™t believe you managed to get a faculty apartment.โ€

Jamison gave a faint smile. โ€œYou shouldโ€™ve told me about this sooner. Then you wouldnโ€™t have had to run around all day by yourself.โ€

Ivy made a face. โ€œI didnโ€™t think it was that serious, and youโ€™re busy with work. If Iโ€™d told you, youโ€™d just have dropped everything to come over, and that wasnโ€™t necessary.โ€

โ€œIt was. Nothingโ€™s more important than you.โ€

Ivy bit back a smile, her heart filled with warmth and reassurance.

โ€œAnd one more thingโ€”come with me to the hospital later for a full check-up.โ€ He was still worried that her old roommate hadnโ€™t told the whole truth, and wanted to make sure Ivy was okay.

โ€œNo need. As soon as I found out about this, I went to the hospital for tests right awayโ€”everythingโ€™s fine.โ€ As she spoke, she pulled out a medical report from her bag. โ€œSee for yourself.โ€

Jamisonโ€™s eyes widened in surprise, but he took the paperwork and flipped through it carefully.

โ€œStill anemicโ€ฆโ€

โ€œYeah, thatโ€™s an old issue. Nothing serious.โ€

Sheโ€™d been severely malnourished when she was brought back, and several organs had been affected. But after months of care, sheโ€™d mostly recovered. A little anemia was hardly worth mentioning.

Jamison finally relaxed after reviewing her results, though his tone was a bit curt. โ€œYouโ€™re certainly thoroughโ€”handling something this big all by yourself and not telling me a thing.โ€

Ivy just pressed her lips together and looked at him, not knowing how to respond.

She really thought she could handle it herselfโ€”there was no need to trouble him with everything.

She was an adult, after all. Perfectly capable. Not some clueless idiot.

โ€œDonโ€™t let it happen again. Donโ€™t make me worry.โ€ When his wife remained silent, Jamison added the warning.

โ€œGot it.โ€

By the time they finished dinner, Boyd had already sent over all the details for the apartment, and even arranged for someone to meet them.
