Listen to this chapter:

Jamison arched an eyebrow, shooting his wife a disgruntled look.

Ivy squeezed his hand under the table, signaling him to keep quiet, then turned to reassure the elderly woman, โ€œMom, please donโ€™t worry. Even if he canโ€™t have children, I wonโ€™t hold it against him. We can choose to live childfree, or we could adopt if we want to. Letโ€™s just take things as they come.โ€

The old womanโ€™s face darkened at that. Her tone was stern as she replied, โ€œThatโ€™s not acceptable. You have to have a child. If it comes to it, you should try IVFโ€“do whatever it takes.โ€

Jamisonโ€™s expression hardened. โ€œIVF takes a real toll on a womanโ€™s body, and since the problem is on my end, the chances of success are slim at best. Thereโ€™s no reason for her to suffer through that for nothing.โ€

As a doctor, he knew all too well just how hard IVF could be on a womanโ€™s health.

But the old woman was stubborn. โ€œYou still need to try. What if it works? Thereโ€™s nothing like your own flesh and blood. You never know where an adopted child comes fromโ€“what if something happensโ€ฆโ€

Jamisonโ€™s patience snapped. He cut her off before she could finish, โ€œMom, about this-โ€

But before he could get the words out, Ivy pinched his hand again and quickly soothed the old woman, โ€œMom, why donโ€™t you focus on getting better for now? Weโ€™ll take this seriously, I promise.โ€

โ€œHmm, fine. Go get some dinner, Iโ€™m going to rest a bit,โ€ the old woman said, her expression softening slightly at Ivyโ€™s attitude. She waved them off, signaling that they could leave.

Once they stepped out of the bedroom, Jamison said bluntly, โ€œJust ignore her. Iโ€™m not interested in having kids anyway. I think itโ€™s perfect, just the two of us.โ€

Ivy lowered her voice, โ€œStill, you canโ€™t argue with her faceโ€“toโ€“face, not when sheโ€™s still recovering.โ€

โ€œI know how to handle it.โ€

He sounded sure, but Ivy couldnโ€™t help worrying. โ€œAlso, when weโ€™re at your parentsโ€˜ place, you really donโ€™t need to go out of your way to defend me. And you absolutely shouldnโ€™t argue with them just because of me.โ€

Jamison had already taken a couple of steps away, but at that, he turned back, his handsome face marked with confusion. โ€œWhy not?โ€

โ€œWhy do you think?โ€ Ivy stepped up beside him, giving his arm a playful little punch as she spoke in a hushed voice. โ€œThe more you defend me, the more jealous they get. Theyโ€™ll just see me as some conniving seductress whoโ€™s turned their son against his family.โ€

Jamison couldnโ€™t help but laugh. โ€œDonโ€™t be ridiculous. I canโ€™t just stand by if youโ€™re being mistreated.โ€

โ€œRelax, Iโ€™m not exactly the meek, longโ€“suffering daughterโ€“inโ€“law type.โ€

What Ivy really thought was that Jamisonโ€™s parents were getting up there in years, and with his hot temper, if he ever went headโ€“toโ€“head with them and something happened to their health, that would be a burden she couldnโ€™t bear.

There was another reason, too: sheโ€™d realized that Jamisonโ€™s parents, for all their prickliness, werenโ€™t unreasonable people.

They didnโ€™t much care for her, but for Jamisonโ€™s sake, theyโ€™d still accepted her into the family.

That was a far cry from the kind of inโ€“laws whoโ€™d resort to cold words, endless criticism, or even threats to break up a marriage.

And anyway, Jamison wasnโ€™t a mamaโ€™s boyโ€“he treated her well.

So, after weighing it all up, Ivy didnโ€™t mind putting up with a little discomfort during their visits to the Ludwig family estate.

Worst case scenario, she could always take it out on Jamison once they were back homeโ€“he might even think it added a little spice to their marriage.

Jamison thought it over, then pulled her into a hug and kissed her on the cheek, unable to help himself. โ€œIvy, thank you. Youโ€™re amazing.โ€

Ivy couldnโ€™t help but snicker inwardly.

First time anyoneโ€™s called me โ€œamazingโ€ in that way, she thoughtโ€“it almost sounded sarcastic.

Just as they were getting cozy, Thad Ludwig walked in and caught them in the act. He immediately slapped a hand over his eyes and spun around. โ€œFor crying out loud, canโ€™t you two keep it PG? What if you corrupt the kid?โ€

He hadnโ€™t finished speaking when Halley Ludwigโ€™s excited, highโ€“pitched voice rang out, โ€œUncle Jamison, Aunt Ivy, are you making me a little brother or sister?โ€

Jamison and Ivy both fell silent, exasperated.

After dinner, Halley learned that Uncle Jamison and Aunt Ivy would be spending the night at the family estate, and flatโ€“out refused to leave. She insisted on sharing a room with them.

Davina Foster was mortified by her sonโ€™s antics, trying every trick to persuade him, but nothing worked.

โ€œI want to stay with Uncle Jamison and Aunt Ivy!โ€ Halley declared, pushing her mother towards the door. โ€œI promise I wonโ€™t interrupt them making me a little brother or sister. Mom, you and Dad go homeโ€“donโ€™t ruin our fun together!โ€

Davina was so frustrated she had a headache. She rounded on her husband. โ€œThad! Take your son and get him out of here. Heโ€™s driving me crazy!โ€

Thad got out of the car, but before he could reach Halley, the little rascal darted away, scampering straight to Jamison and leaping into his arms like a monkey.

โ€œUncle Jamison, save me!โ€

Jamison found his nephew a handful, but Ivy was amused. When Thad approached, she suggested, โ€œHey, why not let Halley stay at the estate tonight? The driver can take him straight to preschool in the morningโ€“you and Davina could use a night off.โ€

Davina circled back, protesting, โ€œNo way. Heโ€™s too much to handle, you shouldnโ€™t have to deal with him.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not too much!โ€ Halley, still clinging to Jamison, piped up quickly. โ€œI promise to be good for Aunt Ivy! I wonโ€™t move around in my sleep, I wonโ€™t fart, and I definitely wonโ€™t talk in my dreams!โ€
