Jamison dropped his wife off at Golden Maple Estate, still trying to salvage the situation as she was about to get out of the car.
โIvy, why donโt you go inside, relax for a bit, and pack your things? Move in with me tonight.โ
Heโd been pestering her the whole ride home, and Ivyโs patience had worn thin. She turned, ready to snap at him, but just then his phone rang.
He glanced at the screenโan incoming call from home. He answered at once, โYes? Whereโs the family doctor? Okayโฆ Iโll be there right away.โ
Ivy could guessโsomething must have happened with his mother.
After hanging up, Jamison sighed. โAlright, looks like youโll have to stay here tonight. I need to go back to the family house.โ
โIs your momโs condition serious?โ Ivy asked, concern in her voice.
โIโm not sure. They said sheโs having some chest tightness and trouble breathing. I need to check on her.โ
โThen go, you should spend the night there,โ Ivy said, quickly turning to open the car door.
But Jamison was faster. He caught her by the wrist, pulled her back, and kissed her before she could protest.
She tried to wriggle free. โHeyโstop, Iโm serious, you need to go-โ
โIโm giving you the night to think about this. Iโll come pick you up in the morning.โ
Even knowing he was in the wrong, Dr. Ludwig insisted on steering the rhythm between them. A night apart was both punishment for himself and a chance for her to cool off.
Ivy shoved him away, forcing herself to sound indifferent. โWeโll see about that.โ
Without another word, she got out and walked off, not bothering to look back.
Jamison watched her proud, unyielding figure disappear, and let out a helpless laugh. Maybe it was for the best that the truth was finally out.
He suddenly felt lighter, as if a huge weight had been lifted from his shoulders. No more nerves, no more guilt, no more tiptoeing around her. Even if heโd made her angry, there was a strange sense of relief.
Back inside, Ivy found Katrina peeking her head out from the kitchen. โHey, youโre back by yourself? Dr. Ludwig didnโt come up with you?โ
Ivy set her bag down and slipped off her shoes. โI can walk just fine on my own. Why would he need to come up?โ
Womenโs intuition was razor sharp. Katrinaโs eyes sparkled with curiosity. โWait, did you two have a fight?โ
โSomething like that.โ
That only made Katrina more interested. โBut why? Dr. Ludwigโs crazy about you, always doting and attentive. And youโre not exactly unreasonable. How did you two end up fighting?โ
Jamisonโs online escapades were something Ivy had never told her best friend before. But now that everything was out in the open, and she was still a bit annoyed, she decided to tell Katrina the whole story from beginning to end.
By the time she finished, Katrina looked stunned.
โWow, you two are a real piece of work. Itโs like youโre both chess grandmastersโalways two moves ahead.โ
Ivy rolled her eyes.
โGood thing youโre evenly matched. If either of you was slower, youโd get played for a fool and thank them for it.โ
Ivy had to admit, she agreed.
โBut look at it this wayโDr. Ludwigโs been planning this forever. He really loves you. You should be happy about that.โ
Ivy flopped down on the couch, shooting her friend a look. โSo if someone lies to you and messes with you for ages, youโre supposed to feel happy?โ
โOh, come on, look at it case by case. Dr. Ludwig is obviously just terrified of losing you. Thatโs why he blew things out of proportion and couldnโt come clean.โ
Ivy didnโt answer, thinking back to his heartfelt confession in the villa.
โIt was a white lie, and youโve already called him out. Heโs apologized, admitted faultโlet it go.โ
Ivy smirked. โHonestly, Iโm not even mad anymore. But I wanted to let him sweat a little.โ
โI get it! My Ivyโs the most magnanimous, clever woman I know. You always see who cares about you.โ
Ivy frowned. โDid you have honey for dinner or something?โ
โNope, just the truth.โ
Ivy laughed, a little self-satisfied. โI think so too.โ
Sheโd always imagined that if this day ever cameโif the lies came to lightโsheโd be furious, maybe even break things off. Sheโd always hated being lied to or played for a fool.
But now that it was real, she didnโt feel nearly as angry as sheโd expected. Maybe her heart had already tilted toward Jamison. As long as he didnโt cross any real lines, she just couldnโt stay mad. Pretending to be upset, acting hard to pleaseโit was just to teach him a lesson. Otherwise, heโd never learn.
Meanwhile, back at the old family home, Jamison arrived to find the family doctor had already given his mother emergency treatment.
Jamison spoke with the doctor, got all the details, and then went to reassure the rest of the family. His father, Danny Ludwig, was especially anxious about his wife. Seeing his youngest son, he worried Jamison would just check in and leave right away. After a momentโs thought, Danny said, โIf youโre not too busy these days, why not stay here for a while? Once your motherโs feeling better, you can go back. And if you and Ivy canโt stand to be apart, bring her here too.โ
Jamison was caught off guard. His fatherโs words were a clear sign of acceptanceโfor Ivy, and for their relationship. Apparently, that little โconfessionโ at the hospitalโwhere Jamison admitted to having health issues and not being able to have childrenโhad really changed the familyโs attitude. Now, they probably worried Ivy would leave him over it.
โNo need. Ivy has her own placeโsheโd probably feel out of place here.โ
