Chapter 426

โ€œWhat are you thinking about?โ€ Jamison glanced in the rearview mirror, noticing Ivy had drifted off, and his concern was immediate.

โ€œItโ€™s nothing,โ€ Ivy snapped back to the present and smiled at Halley. โ€œI was just thinking about how close you three siblings are. The Ludwig family must have some wonderful family values.โ€

For a family to be so united, for its members to stay close and carry on its legacy, it all came down to the atmosphere at homeโ€“the values instilled growing up.

And that all started with the worldview and character of the parents.

The Windsor family and the Ludwig familyโ€“two polar opposites, each a textbook example in their own way.

Sheโ€™d managed to break free from a truly toxic home, only to stumble into something unexpectedly beautiful.

Sometimes she wondered if her life had been lucky, or just tragic in a different way.

When they arrived at Golden Maple Estate with Halley in tow, Katrina Lester caught sight of the little guy and, for a split second, thought the two of them had been hiding a child all this time.

โ€œThis is the youngest Ludwig siblingโ€“Halley. He goes by Hal,โ€ Ivy explained quickly. Katrina pressed a hand to her chest. โ€œYou gave me a heart attack! For a moment, I thought youโ€™d become a stepmom overnight.โ€

Ivy: โ€œโ€ฆโ€

โ€œSo is it a case of โ€˜the youngest likes the youngestโ€™? Misery loves company?โ€ Katrina teased.

Ivy paused, glanced back at the man following behind, and suddenly it clicked. โ€œOh! I didnโ€™t even realizeโ€“youโ€™re both the youngest in your families. No wonder Halley sticks to you like glue.โ€

Jamison looked utterly unimpressed. โ€œWhatโ€™s that got to do with anything?โ€

He wore that cool, handsome expression even when saying something so ridiculous, and it made Ivy burst out laughing again.

Later, as they packed up Ivyโ€™s things, Jamisonโ€™s sour mood returned, plain as day.

โ€œYouโ€™re taking all of this? Donโ€™t tell me youโ€™re not coming back for the weekend?โ€

Ivy kept packing. โ€œIf Iโ€™m not too busy, of course Iโ€™ll come home on the weekend.โ€

โ€œWhat could possibly keep a senior in college so busy?โ€ His tone was halfโ€“mocking, as if he thought skipping class was no big deal.

Ivy shot him a glare. โ€œIโ€™ve got finals coming up! And multiple exams to prep for! Plus my internshipโ€“how could I not be busy? Just because youโ€™re Dr. Ludwig, saving lives and all, doesnโ€™t mean the rest of us are just sitting around eating bonbons and wasting away, right?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆThatโ€™s not what I meant.โ€ Jamison pressed his lips together, then muttered an apology. โ€œI justโ€ฆโ€

Whatever he was going to say next, he let it drop.

Ivy zipped up her suitcase and glanced around to make sure nothing was left behind. Then she turned to him, all business. โ€œWould you mind leaving your number with the building manager again? If anything comes up, Iโ€™d rather they reach you directly.โ€

Last time a pipe burst, and if the manager hadnโ€™t found Jamison to unlock the door, the place wouldโ€™ve been a disaster.

She was bossing him around like a husband, and it made Dr. Ludwig beam with pride. He grinned, stepping closer. โ€œSure. Iโ€™ll let them know. Guess Iโ€™m the official property owner again.โ€

He pulled her into a hug, still smiling.

โ€œWhat are you doing?โ€ Ivy wriggled, faking annoyance.

Jamison held her tight, his arms circling her waist as he looked down at her. โ€œA whole week apart? Thatโ€™s way too longโ€ฆโ€

โ€œItโ€™s just five days,โ€ she said, cheeks flushing as she met his intense gaze. โ€œItโ€™ll go by fast.โ€

She could feel her heart pounding, especially with Professor Pennโ€™s words echoing in her head and knowing what might happen tonight. The thought made her whole body feel hot, and she couldnโ€™t even meet his eyes.

โ€œWhat am I supposed to do when I miss youโ€ฆโ€ he murmured, brushing his nose against hers. โ€œCan I come visit you at school?โ€
