Jamison let out a low, amused laugh.

Ivy looked at him seriously. โ€œWell, weโ€™re married now. Whatever it is you want from me, just say it straight. I canโ€™t run anymore, so thereโ€™s no need to keep hiding things from me.โ€

He nodded, a glint of mischief in his eyes. โ€œYouโ€™re right, I do want something from you. I want you for a lifetime. So, what do you sayโ€”are you in?โ€

Ivy frowned, studying him intently. But she couldnโ€™t spot a single crack in his facade. Could it really be love? She didnโ€™t doubt her own appealโ€”objectively, she was a catch. But with Jamisonโ€™s background and looks, he could easily find someone โ€œbetterโ€ by anyoneโ€™s standards. Then again, love rarely made sense. Hadnโ€™t she once given her whole heart to Micah Shepherd , only to have reality slap her in the face? That man turned out to be a complete disaster.

After a brief pause, Ivy set her jaw and declared, โ€œIโ€™m in! Why wouldnโ€™t I be? Whoever bails first is a total jerkโ€”an absolute scumbag.โ€

Jamison clicked his tongue. โ€œHarsh. Thatโ€™s so you.โ€

She smirked. โ€œGo big or go home. Otherwise, whatโ€™s the point?โ€ The tension in her chest eased, a strange lightness blooming inside her. Even the shadow that her illness cast seemed to lift, chased away by his bold declaration.

But thenโ€”she suddenly turned back, eyebrows knitted. โ€œWhatโ€™s the deal with that female doctor earlier? Donโ€™t tell me sheโ€™s an ex?โ€

โ€œWho?โ€

โ€œYou know who. She called you โ€˜senior.โ€™ Donโ€™t pretend youโ€™ve already forgotten her.โ€

Jamison caught on and explained, โ€œSheโ€™s just a colleague. Nothing more.โ€

โ€œShe likes you,โ€ Ivy said flatly.

Jamison didnโ€™t bother denying it. โ€œPlenty of women at the hospital have a thing for me. Thatโ€™s why I brought you alongโ€”to show them Iโ€™m married now. And that my wife is gorgeous and classy, so maybe theyโ€™ll finally give up.โ€

Ivy stared at him, speechless. Sure, he was complimenting her, but using her as a human shield was seriously infuriating.

โ€œHmph! I get it now. You married me in such a rush just to fend off all those desperate admirers, didnโ€™t you? Afraid an ordinary woman couldnโ€™t handle the competition, so you went for someone like meโ€”a heartless femme fatale.โ€ After all, if she could cut off her own family without flinching, dealing with a few lovesick nurses would be childโ€™s play.

โ€œA femme fataleโ€ฆ At least you know yourself,โ€ Jamison said with a laugh, nodding approvingly. โ€œI shouldโ€™ve known youโ€™d figure it out, Miss Ivy. Youโ€™re sharp.โ€

Ivy rolled her eyes and looked away, not dignifying that with a response. She turned to the window, and after a while, said quietly, โ€œDonโ€™t worry. I was made for this job.โ€

He smiled. โ€œI know you can handle it.โ€

They fell into a comfortable silence. Ivy felt her spirits lift, a rare burst of brightness chasing away the gloom. Jamison, meanwhile, stole a glance at her when she wasnโ€™t looking. His eyes were thoughtful, shadowed by worry. He couldnโ€™t tell if Ivy was truly happy, or just putting on a brave face. Every time he thought about her possibly lying in an operating room one day, losing a part of herself, his heart twisted with anxiety. What he couldnโ€™t know was that, years later, Ivy would indeed be wheeled into surgeryโ€”not to save herself, but to save himโ€ฆ

They had lunch at The Gilded Fork.
