Listen to this chapter:

โ€œThere are plenty of men who lose their heads over a pretty face, and donโ€™t underestimate Emmaโ€™s charm either. Remember how she managed to reel Micah in?โ€ Ivy chuckled as she slipped the invitation back into its envelope.

Katrina nodded, half understanding. โ€œSo, are you going to the party? Itโ€™s this Saturday nightโ€“just a couple of days away.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll be there. I mean, I practically played matchmaker for these two, so of course I have to show up and see the drama unfold.โ€ Ivyโ€™s grin grew sly; she was clearly looking forward to the spectacle.

โ€œYouโ€™re the matchmaker?โ€ Katrina looked genuinely surprised. โ€œWhat do you mean?โ€

โ€œWell, Sheridan Carter only met Emma because Jamison set them up. Just do a little digging into that guyโ€™s reputation and youโ€™ll see how reckless Emmaโ€™s being.โ€ With that, Ivy slipped on her shoes, waved her hand, and headed for the door. โ€œIโ€™m off. Call me if you need anything.โ€

Ivy made it back to the apartment just in time for dinner, lugging only a small bag.

Jamison, freshly changed, glanced up as she walked in. โ€œThatโ€™s all you brought?โ€

Instead of answering directly, Ivy asked, โ€œDid you shower by yourself?โ€

His back injury meant he couldnโ€™t get it wet, otherwise it would risk infection.

โ€œI didnโ€™t shower, but the clothes were filthy. I had to change, I couldnโ€™t stand wearing them anymore.โ€

Ivyโ€™s tense expression softened, and she carried her small bag inside.

One of the staff greeted her respectfully: โ€œMrs. Jamison.โ€

The title still felt strange to Ivy.

During dinner, Jamison brought the subject up again. โ€œAre you planning to bring your things over little by little? Or are you just going to leave them and buy everything new?โ€

Without looking up, Ivy replied calmly, โ€œClasses start next week. Iโ€™m moving into the dorms, so Iโ€™ll just take my things straight to campus. No point hauling them here first.โ€

She hadnโ€™t even finished her sentence when Jamison set down his fork and looked up at her, eyes wide with surprise and a flash of irritation.

โ€œYouโ€™re really going back to school?โ€ His tone was low and serious.

โ€œOf course. I never finished my undergradโ€“what else am I supposed to do?โ€ Ivy finally looked at him, her expression earnest.

โ€œBut weโ€™re married now. If you go back to school, what am I supposed to do?โ€ Jamison knew she was independent, but he hadnโ€™t expected her to make such a big decision without talking to him first.

Ivy frowned, clearly puzzled. โ€œYouโ€™re a grown man. What do you mean, what are you supposed to do? Itโ€™s not like Iโ€™m moving across the country. Neo Haven University is just on the other side of the city. If anything happens, I can be home in no time.โ€

Jamison fell silent, appetite gone, and set his fork aside.

โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong?โ€ Ivy sat up a little straighter, genuinely confused by his sulking. โ€œIs it so wrong for me to want to go back to school? Am I not allowed to have ambitions?โ€

โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong?โ€ Jamison echoed, his cool composure returning. โ€œMiss Ivy, weโ€™re married. Donโ€™t you think you should at least talk things over with me first? I donโ€™t mind that you want to study, but if you move into the dorms and leave me here alone, hardly seeing youโ€“whatโ€™s the point of being married?โ€

Ivy had been ready to argue, but his string of complaints made her think of something Katrina once said.

โ€œNo wonder Katrina says youโ€™re clingy,โ€ she teased, dropping a piece of roasted chicken into his bowl. โ€œWhereโ€™s your famous aloofness now? Youโ€™re acting so different, I hardly recognize you.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t joke around. Iโ€™m being serious,โ€ Jamison replied, his expression unchanged.

Ivy let out an exasperated sigh. โ€œWhen I applied to re-enroll at Neo Haven, we werenโ€™t even married yet. How could I have discussed it with you? And then everything else happened so fast, I just forgot to mention it.โ€

โ€œCan you be serious for once? Youโ€™re still injuredโ€“what are you even thinking?โ€ she snapped, catching on to his reaction.

Jamison looked put out. โ€œItโ€™s a normal physiological response, okay? Didnโ€™t you pay attention in biology? If I didnโ€™t react at all, wouldnโ€™t you be worried I was secretly sick and trying to trick you into marrying me?โ€
