Chapter 368

โ€œBack to the apartment? Youโ€™re not staying in the hospital?โ€

โ€œNo need.โ€

Adela Ludwig immediately objected. โ€œYouโ€™re seriously injured, the woundโ€™s infected, and youโ€™re running a fever, arenโ€™t you? What if things get worse at home? This is your turf anywayโ€”whatโ€™s the difference between staying here or at the apartment?โ€

Jamison forced himself to be patient. โ€œA hospital is a hospital, and home is home. If thereโ€™s no difference, why donโ€™t you move in here yourself?โ€

He hadnโ€™t even finished speaking when his phone rang. Glancing at the caller ID, he headed for the door without hesitation.

On the way to the hospital earlier, heโ€™d called his personal assistantโ€”who also happened to be his cousin, Boyd Ludwigโ€”asking him to pick them up.

Now, seeing the call, he figured Boyd must have arrived.

Adela, having just been rebuffed by her youngest son yet again, was fuming.

โ€œThat brat! No wonder his father wanted to thrash himโ€”heโ€™s justโ€ฆโ€ She glared at his retreating figure, her raised hand trembling with anger.

Thad quickly tried to soothe her. โ€œLet him go, Mom. Heโ€™s a doctorโ€”he knows what heโ€™s doing.โ€

โ€œKnows what heโ€™s doing and ends up like this?โ€ Adela huffed, still clearly upset. Swallowing her annoyance, she hurried after Jamison.

Outside the ER, a sleek black Mercedes waited at the curb.

Boyd hopped out, holding the door open with a grin. โ€œHey, Uncle Jay, back from your honeymoon already?โ€

Ivy had met Boyd before but hardly spoken to him. Hearing him call her โ€œAunt Ivyโ€ felt a little surreal, and she struggled to get used to the sudden elevation in status.

Jamison just nodded and bent into the car. Before he could get in, his motherโ€™s voice called out behind him.

Boyd turned at the sound, surprised. โ€œGrandma, Uncle Thad! Youโ€™re here too?โ€

โ€œBoyd,โ€ Thad acknowledged with a nod, then added a reminder, โ€œTake your uncle home and keep an eye on him for a few days. Heโ€™s injuredโ€”make sure he rests and stays home.โ€

โ€œUncle Jay got hurt?โ€ Boyd stared, wide-eyed.

โ€œIโ€™m fine. Letโ€™s go.โ€ Jamison climbed into the car, his tone clipped.

Adela, her expression stern, issued instructions. โ€œIโ€™ll send over two housekeepers from the family estate to take care of you for the next few days.โ€

โ€œNo need. I have a wife,โ€ Jamison shot back without hesitation.

โ€œSheโ€™s a pampered rich girlโ€”she can barely look after herself, let alone you.โ€ Adelaโ€™s voice rose in exasperation.

Ivy, acutely aware that she couldnโ€™t even cook, quickly offered a polite smile to her mother-in-law. โ€œItโ€™s fine, Mom. Go ahead and send them over.โ€

Jamison scowled. โ€œI donโ€™t like strangers in my home.โ€

โ€œThen let them come during the day and leave at night.โ€

He fell silent, which was as good as agreement.

Watching all this, Thad found himself surprised once again by the dynamic between the newlyweds.

Sure enough, everyone has their match. At last, someone who can keep that troublemaker in line.

โ€œGrandma, Uncle Thad, weโ€™re heading out!โ€ Boyd called, closing the car door before sliding behind the wheel and pulling away from the curb.

Adela watched the car drive off, worry etched into her face. โ€œWe agreed to let him marry Ivy, but who knows if it was the right decision?โ€

Thad signaled for the driver to bring their own car around. As he helped his mother into the back seat, he gave a relaxed little laugh. โ€œRight or wrong, itโ€™s not our place to interfere. Jamison seems pretty happy, if you ask me. You should let go a littleโ€”stop wearing yourself out over things you canโ€™t change.โ€

His mother bristled at that, โ€œYou boys grow up and suddenly think you donโ€™t need meโ€”what, am I too old to care now?โ€

Thad fell silent, unable to argue.

The apartment was close to the hospital. Barely ten minutes later, Jamison was home.
