Chapter 368
โBack to the apartment? Youโre not staying in the hospital?โ
โNo need.โ
Adela Ludwig immediately objected. โYouโre seriously injured, the woundโs infected, and youโre running a fever, arenโt you? What if things get worse at home? This is your turf anywayโwhatโs the difference between staying here or at the apartment?โ
Jamison forced himself to be patient. โA hospital is a hospital, and home is home. If thereโs no difference, why donโt you move in here yourself?โ
He hadnโt even finished speaking when his phone rang. Glancing at the caller ID, he headed for the door without hesitation.
On the way to the hospital earlier, heโd called his personal assistantโwho also happened to be his cousin, Boyd Ludwigโasking him to pick them up.
Now, seeing the call, he figured Boyd must have arrived.
Adela, having just been rebuffed by her youngest son yet again, was fuming.
โThat brat! No wonder his father wanted to thrash himโheโs justโฆโ She glared at his retreating figure, her raised hand trembling with anger.
Thad quickly tried to soothe her. โLet him go, Mom. Heโs a doctorโhe knows what heโs doing.โ
โKnows what heโs doing and ends up like this?โ Adela huffed, still clearly upset. Swallowing her annoyance, she hurried after Jamison.
Outside the ER, a sleek black Mercedes waited at the curb.
Boyd hopped out, holding the door open with a grin. โHey, Uncle Jay, back from your honeymoon already?โ
Ivy had met Boyd before but hardly spoken to him. Hearing him call her โAunt Ivyโ felt a little surreal, and she struggled to get used to the sudden elevation in status.
Jamison just nodded and bent into the car. Before he could get in, his motherโs voice called out behind him.
Boyd turned at the sound, surprised. โGrandma, Uncle Thad! Youโre here too?โ
โBoyd,โ Thad acknowledged with a nod, then added a reminder, โTake your uncle home and keep an eye on him for a few days. Heโs injuredโmake sure he rests and stays home.โ
โUncle Jay got hurt?โ Boyd stared, wide-eyed.
โIโm fine. Letโs go.โ Jamison climbed into the car, his tone clipped.
Adela, her expression stern, issued instructions. โIโll send over two housekeepers from the family estate to take care of you for the next few days.โ
โNo need. I have a wife,โ Jamison shot back without hesitation.
โSheโs a pampered rich girlโshe can barely look after herself, let alone you.โ Adelaโs voice rose in exasperation.
Ivy, acutely aware that she couldnโt even cook, quickly offered a polite smile to her mother-in-law. โItโs fine, Mom. Go ahead and send them over.โ
Jamison scowled. โI donโt like strangers in my home.โ
โThen let them come during the day and leave at night.โ
He fell silent, which was as good as agreement.
Watching all this, Thad found himself surprised once again by the dynamic between the newlyweds.
Sure enough, everyone has their match. At last, someone who can keep that troublemaker in line.
โGrandma, Uncle Thad, weโre heading out!โ Boyd called, closing the car door before sliding behind the wheel and pulling away from the curb.
Adela watched the car drive off, worry etched into her face. โWe agreed to let him marry Ivy, but who knows if it was the right decision?โ
Thad signaled for the driver to bring their own car around. As he helped his mother into the back seat, he gave a relaxed little laugh. โRight or wrong, itโs not our place to interfere. Jamison seems pretty happy, if you ask me. You should let go a littleโstop wearing yourself out over things you canโt change.โ
His mother bristled at that, โYou boys grow up and suddenly think you donโt need meโwhat, am I too old to care now?โ
Thad fell silent, unable to argue.
The apartment was close to the hospital. Barely ten minutes later, Jamison was home.
