Jamison Ludwig was caught off guard by the question. โWhat could I possibly be hiding from you?โ
โAre you sure thereโs nothing?โ
He chuckled, giving her a straight answer. โIf you want to ask something, just say it. No need to beat around the bush.โ
โItโs nothing, really,โ Ivy said, hesitating. โItโs just that I feel like Iโve come to rely on you so much, and everythingโs moving so fastโฆ Iโm scared that if I fall head over heels, itโll turn out youโre just playing games with me, and then Iโllโฆโ She pulled a face and gave a little shrug.
The meaning was clear: if I go all in and find out later that you have some hidden agendaโthat youโre not seriousโthen Iโll be the one who loses everything.
Jamison understood exactly what she meant. A smile tugged at his lips. โYouโre overthinking it. If I were just fooling around, would I be risking my neck for you?โ
โWell, thatโs true.โ Ivy nodded, convincing herself to drop the thought.
โTry to get some sleep. Rest is the best medicine.โ
โI canโt sleep. Lying like this is making my whole body ache.โ He frowned, trying to suppress the discomfort. โHow much of the IV is left?โ
Ivy glanced at the bag. โNot much. Just hang in there a little longer. When itโs done, Iโll help you sit up. Youโll feel better then.โ
โAlright.โ
Ivy lowered her head, fiddling absently with her phone, but her mind was still on the conversation sheโd just had. What if, once Jamisonโs head cleared, he started getting suspicious?
Especially since Dale had messaged him earlier. With Jamisonโs keen mind, once he saw that text, heโd probably put two and two together about why sheโd been asking those questions.
No way. She had to get rid of the โevidence.โ
After a momentโs consideration, Ivy almost laughed at herself. Suddenly, she frowned and let out a dramatic sigh. โUgh.โ
Sure enough, Jamison immediately asked, โWhatโs wrong?โ
โMy phoneโs deadโabout to shut off any second. I was just about to call Katrina and let her know Iโm coming back tomorrow.โ
She played her part perfectly.
Jamison replied, โYou could ask the nurse or a doctor for a charger. They probably have one.โ
โI will in a bit. But do you have Katrina Lesterโs number?โ
โI do.โ
โThen let me use your phone to call her real quick.โ
โSure.โ
Ivy grabbed his phone from the nightstand. โYou need to unlock it.โ
Without waiting for him to take the phone, she stepped closer and took his right hand. โWhich finger?โ
โThumb.โ
Jamison had no suspicion at all and let her guide his thumb to the sensor, unlocking the screen.
Ivy found Katrinaโs number in the call log and dialed, then walked away from the bed, out of Jamisonโs line of sight.
โHello, Katrinaโitโs me. My phone died, so Iโm calling from Jamisonโs.โ
On the other end, Katrina didnโt think much of it, chatting casually. โWhatโs up? Change of plans?โ
โNo, just wanted to let you know Iโll be back tomorrow.โ
As she spoke, Ivy, now hidden from Jamisonโs view, lowered the phone and pulled up his messaging app.
There it wasโDale Sullivanโs message, still unread. She spotted the red notification dot right away.
Ivy quickly deleted the newest message.
Now, Jamison would have no idea Dale had messaged him, or that sheโd seen it.
Katrina sounded puzzled on the phone. โDidnโt you already tell me youโd be back tomorrow? Why call again just to say that?โ
Ivy didnโt answer; she was too busy scrolling through Dale Sullivanโs chat history with Jamison.
And there, she made a new discovery.
This Dale Sullivan was, in fact, the same โDaleโ from the โStonks Only Go Upโ group chat.
Whatโs more, Dale had known about her and Jamison getting their marriage license the very day it happened.
Heโd even asked Jamison if he could mention it in the group.
Jamison had told him to keep quiet.
