Chapter 256

Listen to this chapter:

Jamisonโ€™s expression flickered with surprise, then he seemed to understand. โ€œNo wonderโ€”you never call me first, let alone show up to pick me up from work. Turns out you need a favor.โ€

Ivy looked away, a little embarrassed, her lips pressed together.

Worried heโ€™d scared her off, Jamison didnโ€™t dare push the topic. He softened his tone. โ€œIโ€™m kidding. Donโ€™t take it to heart. Honestly, if you ever need anything, just tell me outright. No need for all this fuss.โ€

After all, in less than a week, theyโ€™d be signing their marriage license. Theyโ€™d be husband and wife.

There was no place for awkward formality between them now.

Ivyโ€™s shoulders relaxed a little.

โ€œSo, what is it?โ€ Jamison asked.

Ivy drew a small breath. โ€œEmma called. She wants me to come home for dinner tomorrow night. She saidโ€ฆ Baillie will be there too, so itโ€™ll be a family reunion. Supposedly to celebrate.โ€

Jamison kept his eyes on the road, but even in profile, she could see a flicker of surprise cross his face.

โ€œSheโ€™s really that brazen? Sheโ€™d just invite you over herself?โ€

โ€œShowing off, I guess.โ€ Ivy gave a dry, humorless smile.

โ€œSo you want me to go with you to the Windsor place?โ€

โ€œYes. But I wasnโ€™t sure ifโ€ฆ youโ€™d be free.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll make time. Iโ€™ll sort out my work schedule in advance. Even if you hadnโ€™t asked, I wouldnโ€™t let you go there alone. I canโ€™t trust that place with you by yourself.โ€

Ivyโ€™s heart warmed at how quickly he agreed.

Really, aside from being a little cold and sometimes sharp-tongued, this man hardly had any flaws at all.

He was steady, decisive, always reliableโ€”someone who made her feel safe. โ€œAlright then, weโ€™ll go together tomorrow night.โ€ Ivy managed a genuine smile, but then something occurred to her. โ€œItโ€™s strange that Baillieโ€™s suddenly being let out. Iโ€™m guessing the Windsors struck some kind of deal with the Millers, and the Millers dropped the charges.โ€

Jamison nodded. โ€œYou want to know for sure? Thatโ€™s easyโ€”I can make a call and find out.โ€

When they reached the restaurant for dinner, Jamison made a phone call to check on Baillieโ€™s case.

About ten minutes later, he got a call back.

โ€œYou were rightโ€”the Windsors paid out ten million for a private settlement.โ€ Jamison gave a wry grin, a hint of schadenfreude in his voice. โ€œThe Windsors were already on their last legs, and now theyโ€™ve been bled dry once more. Itโ€™s just one disaster after another for them.โ€

Baillie and Lauren were still technically a couple, even if they were in the middle of a messy breakup. When something like that happens, and the woman insists it was assault, the police have to step in.

But honestly, cases like this rarely go to trial. If both sides can work out a deal, the police are more than happy to let it go and save themselves the headache.

Ivy just gave a cool, crooked smile. โ€œThey brought this on themselves. No wonderโ€”even after Emmaโ€™s schemes were exposed, theyโ€™re still protecting her. They must be hoping sheโ€™ll help them climb higher.โ€

โ€œThen why invite you to dinner?โ€ Jamison frowned, puzzled.

Ivy shrugged. โ€œMaybe theyโ€™re putting on a show, trying to win me back. Or maybe Emma just wants to gloat and show the family sheโ€™s still got their ear.โ€

Emma had claimed this was all Adkins and Rosettaโ€™s idea, but Ivy didnโ€™t buy it for a second.

With that woman, lies and truth were all tangled up.

โ€œDonโ€™t worry about it,โ€ Jamison said, his tone reassuring. โ€œWhatever their motive, Iโ€™m with you. And anyway, itโ€™s the perfect chance to tell them about our wedding and see how they react.โ€ He grinned, almost looking forward to tomorrowโ€™s family showdown.
