Chapter 17

โ€œWhat? Are you saying it was Emma who got you kidnapped by those traffickers?โ€ Katrina gasped, cutting Ivy off mid-sentence. Her face was a picture of disbelief.

โ€œYes. I heard it from the traffickers themselves while they were transporting me. That night, they actually grabbed the wrong person at firstโ€”Emma. It was me and the driver who fought tooth and nail to get her out. In the chaos, I ended up falling right into their trap myself.โ€

As Ivy spoke, she gave a bitter, self-deprecating laugh. โ€œFateโ€™s a cruel joke, isnโ€™t it? For three years, Iโ€™ve lost count of how many times I regretted saving her that night. How stupid could I have been?โ€

The thought that Emma might have spent all these years secretly laughing at her made Ivyโ€™s chest burn with rage.

Katrina was trembling so hard with anger that she could barely hold the steering wheel. โ€œDidnโ€™t you tell everyone the truth when you got back? Sheโ€™s the Windsor familyโ€™s adopted daughterโ€”she should be grateful just to have left that orphanage and joined your family. You treated her like your own sister, protected her ever since you were kids, and this is how she repaid you? Sheโ€™s worse than an animal!โ€

Ivyโ€™s voice was calm, tinged with sorrow. โ€œI tried. But every time I said anything, sheโ€™d put on this pitiful act and win everyoneโ€™s sympathy. My whole family took her side.โ€

She sighed, pausing before she went on. โ€œAnd anyway, everyone thought Iโ€™d spent those three years giving birth to some old manโ€™s child and catching HIV. They were disgusted by me, rejected me, and that just made them dote on Emma even more. If they had to choose between us, no questionโ€”theyโ€™d always pick her. Doesnโ€™t matter that Iโ€™m their real daughter. Thatโ€™s human nature for you: cruel and practical.โ€

Katrina couldnโ€™t keep driving anymore. She pulled the car over to the curb, turned to face her friend, and said softly, โ€œIvy, I donโ€™t care about any of that. If youโ€™re ever hurting, you can come to meโ€”always.โ€

Ivy smiled, an expression that was as bright as it was fragile. Then she seemed to remember something. โ€œOh, and donโ€™t worry. I donโ€™t have HIV, and I never had a child.โ€

โ€œReally? Thatโ€™s wonderful!โ€ Katrinaโ€™s eyes widened with surprise and relief.

โ€œYou believe me?โ€ Ivy asked, a little uncertain.

โ€œWhy wouldnโ€™t I?โ€ Katrinaโ€™s eyes sparkled. โ€œI trust youโ€”always.โ€

Ivy nodded, feeling a rare sense of comfort settle in her chest.

โ€œI went to the hospital for a full checkup yesterday. No HIV. But I was chained up in a filthy shed for three years, half-starved the whole time. My healthโ€™s a mess. Iโ€™ve got some skin problems too. Plus, honestly, I probably smell pretty bad. Sorry about that.โ€

She gave an embarrassed laugh.

Katrinaโ€™s eyes filled with tears again as she listened. โ€œStop it, youโ€™re breaking my heart. I donโ€™t care how you smell. All that matters is you survived. Iโ€™m so glad youโ€™re back.โ€

Ivy looked at her friend, and tears welled in her eyes, too. Maybe fate hadnโ€™t been entirely cruelโ€”at least it had left her this one precious friendship.

When she heard that Katrina was being treated horribly by her family and barely scraping by as a grad student, Ivy felt a surge of anger on her behalf. โ€œKatrina, donโ€™t worry. Once Iโ€™m feeling a bit better, letโ€™s start something of our own. Youโ€™ll never have to grovel to them again.โ€

Katrina let out a weary sigh. โ€œBut what could the two of us do?โ€

โ€œYou passed the bar exam when you were a senior, didnโ€™t you? With your skills, youโ€™ll make an incredible lawyer. Iโ€™ll invest in a law firm, and youโ€™ll be the boss.โ€ Ivyโ€™s tone was almost grand.

Katrinaโ€™s jaw dropped. โ€œIvy, are you serious?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m dead serious. What I need to do next is going to be toughโ€”really tough. I need my own legal team. I canโ€™t trust anyone else with this, but if youโ€™re in charge, Iโ€™ll have nothing to worry about.โ€ Ivy had given this a lot of thought over the past few days.

She was going to put Emma behind barsโ€”and take down that entire human trafficking ring. If it cost her every last penny, so be it. Sheโ€™d get justice for herselfโ€”and for all the women and children whoโ€™d suffered like she had. She had money, but she didnโ€™t know the law. Last night, sheโ€™d been agonizing over that very problem. She never imagined Katrina would show up at her door today.

โ€œAll right, Ivy. Iโ€™ll do whatever you needโ€”whatever it takes to make you happy.โ€
