You couldnโt really ask, โWhatโs so wrong with a forty-year-old man, anyway?โ
If Ivy found out Jamison was actually Dr. Handsome, sheโd go nuclear for sure.
So what else could they possibly talk about?
Oh, right! She still owed him a favor.
With that in mind, Jamison said, with total confidence, โHave you forgotten that you still owe me one?โ
Ivy remembered, of course. She just hadnโt expected him to call in the middle of the night just to collect.
Seriously, what was his deal?
โI havenโt forgotten,โ she replied, โbut I canโt really go out these days.โ
Jamison sounded genuinely surprised. โAre you sick again?โ
โOh, so you just sit around hoping Iโll get sick? What do you get out of that? Are you trying to help the hospitalโs bottom line?โ Ivy fired back three sharp questions in a row.
He went silent for a moment, then asked, โThen what is it? Did you get hurt again?โ
Ivy rolled her eyes so hard she was sure he could feel it through the phone. โMr. Ludwig, did you really call me up at this hour just to get yelled at?โ
Honestly, if he wasnโt so well-connected, someone would have punched him in the face for less.
โIโm just checking in. Basic human decency, you know.โ
โNo need, thanks.โ
โThen when do you plan on returning the favor?โ Jamison circled back, relentless.
โHow do you want me to pay you back?โ Ivyโs tone was sharp; if it were up to her, sheโd settle it right now and never owe him a thing again.
That stumped Jamison for a second. Truth was, heโd called on impulse and hadnโt actually thought this through.
Luckily, he recovered quickly. Suddenly, he remembered his hopelessly clueless nephew.
โSoโ Micah and Emma arenโt doing so well these days. Apparently, itโs because Micah still has feelings for you, and Emma really minds.โ
โAnd what does that have to do with me?โ Ivy shot back. โI canโt be responsible for every man whoโs ever had a crush on me.โ
โAt the very least, you should make it clear to Micah that thereโs nothing between you. Let him move on.โ
โI already have. Heโs the one who canโt let go.โ
โReally? Because as far as I know, you accepted his money not long ago,โ Jamison pressed, thinking back to the house sale heโd witnessed himself.
Ivy gave a cold, elegant laugh. โDidnโt your dear nephew tell you? I paid him back ages ago.โ
โYou did?โ For the first time, Jamisonโs calm faรงade faltered.
This whole phone call had put him completely on the back foot. Heโd lost every inch of ground.
โMr. Ludwig, if you want to pick a fight, at least find a decent reason. If you want me to pay back the favor, just say so. Donโt go pinning things on me that arenโt true.โ
โPinning things on you?โ Jamison wasnโt about to admit heโd called just to pick a fight. He tried to sound righteous. โMicah and Emma were perfectly fine, even talking about marriage, before you came back. Now theyโre arguing constantly. Emma got pregnant, then lost the babyโ donโt you think you had anything to do with that?โ
โYour nephew being a jerk isnโt my fault. As for the miscarriage, maybe it just wasnโt meant to be,โ Ivy snapped back without missing a beat.
Micah was a jerk, and Jamison knew it.
So when Ivy hit back, he couldnโt even defend himself.
โRegardless, you should still talk to him and make things clear.โ Jamisonโs voice was defensive, almost desperate, clinging to whatever ground he could salvage.
Ivy bit her tongue to keep from cursing him out, took a deep breath, then asked, โSo if I talk to him and spell things out, weโre even?โ
โYes.โ
โGreat, Iโll call him right now,โ Ivy agreed instantly, her tone edged with challenge. โAnything else?โ
Jamison matched her icy tone. โNo. What else could there possibly be between us?โ
She let out a cold, exasperated laugh, finally venting her long-held annoyance.
โMr. Ludwig, is it true what they say about doctors not being able to heal themselves? With all your expertise, have you really never noticed thereโs something wrong with your own head?โ
