Listen to this chapter:

After reviewing Ivyโ€™s medical records and examining her symptoms, Professor Brown grew thoughtful, his brow furrowing as he asked detailed questions.

โ€œDoctor, is thisโ€ฆserious?โ€ Ivy ventured, her voice tinged with worry.

Professor Brown offered a reassuring smile. โ€œDonโ€™t worry. Itโ€™s nothing too seriousโ€”we can fix this.โ€

Relief washed over Ivy. โ€œThatโ€™s good to hear.โ€

โ€œDo you struggle with severe period pain?โ€ Professor Brown asked, jotting down notes as he spoke.

Ivyโ€™s eyes widened in surprise. โ€œYou could tell that, too?โ€

He chuckled softly. โ€œA good doctor can spot it from your pulse.โ€

He then pointed out a number of unhealthy habits Ivy had picked up, most of which matched her rough years living in the remote countryside.

โ€œYouโ€™ve already been to see Dr. Penn about the cramps, right? Just stick to her treatment plan for now. If it doesnโ€™t help, come back and see me.โ€

Professor Brown glanced at Ivyโ€™s chart, noticing Dr. Pennโ€™s handwritten notes. He nodded knowingly, then leaned in to give further instructions.

Ivy was genuinely moved, thanking him several times in quick succession. She couldnโ€™t help but feel grateful to Dr. Handsomeโ€”he was the one whoโ€™d recommended this specialist.

โ€œThese instructions are all clear,โ€ Professor Brown explained, tapping the paper. โ€œMedication, topical treatment, herbal bathsโ€”theyโ€™re all listed here. But donโ€™t forget: a regular routine, rest, and building up your immune system are just as important.โ€

Ivy stood up and bowed her head in gratitude. โ€œThank you, Doctor. Iโ€™ll remember everything.โ€

As Ivy turned to leave, Professor Brown didnโ€™t call in the next patient right away. Instead, he got up to sanitize his hands, then slipped behind the partition to the adjoining room.

โ€œSo thatโ€™s why youโ€™re here, hiding out in my officeโ€”โ€ he started, only to be interrupted as the exam room door swung open again.

โ€œDoctor!โ€ Ivyโ€™s voice rang out as she returned.

The familiar voice made Jamison, who sat quietly behind the wall, tense up as if heโ€™d just been caught red-handed.

Luckily, the partition kept him hidden from view. Professor Brown, standing near the doorway, simply turned his head to address her.

โ€œBack so soon? Something else on your mind?โ€ he asked.

Ivy gazed at him, hesitant. โ€œHow long will it take for me to recover, realistically? I read online that it could take two or three monthsโ€ฆโ€

Professor Brownโ€™s eyes sparkled with confidence. โ€œIf you follow these instructions, youโ€™ll be as good as new in two weeksโ€”three at the most.โ€

Ivy didnโ€™t quite catch his meaning, but she nodded politely. โ€œThank you, Doctor.โ€ She shut the door gently behind her as she left.

Jamison let out a quiet sigh of relief.

Professor Brown turned, eyeing him with obvious amusement.

โ€œAll right, out with it. Who is she to you?โ€ he asked bluntly.

Jamison feigned innocence. โ€œIโ€™m not sure what you mean, Professor. Shouldnโ€™t you get back to your patients? Theyโ€™ll be waiting.โ€

Professor Brown snorted. โ€œDonโ€™t try to play games with me. I may be old, but my memoryโ€™s sharp. Thatโ€™s the girl you called me about last timeโ€”the one needing acupuncture for her cramps, isnโ€™t it?โ€

Jamisonโ€™s face betrayed a flicker of shock. He glanced at the elderly doctor, chagrined at having underestimated him.

This old man doesnโ€™t miss a thing.

Watching Jamisonโ€™s reaction, Professor Brown allowed himself a satisfied grin. โ€œThe moment she spoke, I remembered.โ€

Jamison cleared his throat awkwardly. โ€œGuess experience really does count for something.โ€

โ€œSo if you know her, why are you hiding over here?โ€ Professor Brown pressed.

Jamisonโ€™s expression grew complicated. โ€œWellโ€ฆ itโ€™s not like weโ€™re friends.โ€

Professor Brown raised an eyebrow. โ€œNot friends? Yet youโ€™re waiting here for her?โ€

With a knowing look, he added, โ€œDonโ€™t tell meโ€”youโ€™ve got a crush on her, but youโ€™re too shy to admit it?โ€

Jamison shut that down immediately. โ€œAbsolutely not. The truth is, weโ€™re archrivals. Whenever we meet, we argue. Thatโ€™s why I stayed out of sight.โ€
